A troubled young man with parental issues and a temptation to give in to his dark side is however material for a psychological thriller, not Star Wars; to make it work in a straightforward SF action film, it will need very skillful writing. The Force Awakens did not make us care overmuch for Kylo Ren’s dilemma, nor did it make us afraid of his power and motivation. He was like an overgrown teenager throwing a tantrum, and so more pathetic than tragic. That's because for me, Kylo is a thinly veiled, very stripped down version of Jacen Solo from the EU (oh excuse me) *ahem* Legends series of novels. If they had made a decent attempt to adapt Jacen instead onto the screen, then this would have been more entertaining. Jacen was trained as a Jedi by Luke but always seemed at odds with him over his studies. Jacen wanted to explore more about the nature and true purpose of the Force for he soon began to feel that it was more than a simple tool or weapon to use by the Jedi. The Vong assault during the New Jedi Order eventually caused him to view the Force in a completely different light while seemingly giving him a near-perfect type of mastery over it. Later, in the Legacy of the Force series, he believes he has the potential to truly unify the galaxy, leading him towards the dark side and causing a split amid Luke and the Jedi Order over the morality of his actions and goals. And that's not even counting the effects and influences of his twin sister Jaina Solo. When I first saw Kylo unmasked, I immediately thought of Jacen for he matches the physical description of him. But everything else from there onward is a pale, pale shadow of a great character. On a brighter note, Season 4 of Rebels premiered this week, with Sabin, Ezra and the group attempting to help Mandalore throw off the yoke of Imperial influence and rule. Family trust, betrayal, clan loyalty, mending the mistakes made in the heat of youth, it's great that they're back.

It's a movie about a red plastic cup lost in the universe.

^^ Huh! I've never heard of Solo brand plastic cups. They must be an American thing.

^^ Huh! I've never heard of Solo brand plastic cups. They must be an American thing. They also make paper cups. Starbucks and Tim Horton are among their customers. But the Red Solo Cup is a staple at parties and is used for beer pong.

It's also been a joke about that movie that even the previous directors were in on from the first day:

Finished Ian Doescher's William Shakespeare's The Force Doth Awaken: Star Wars Part the Seventh. Great stuff. I still wish they'd do this and the prequel volumes with a full cast audio version like they did for the Original Trilogy but I suppose they probably didn't sell enough copies.

@strider Do you have any info on those full cast audio versions of the original trilogy that would facilitate a search for them for a firend of mine who is both a Star wars fan and a frequent cast member and director in local productions of Shakespeare material?

Meanwhile, Rebels continues their journey towards Rogue One with their latest two-parter. Hera's team officially joins Mon Mothma's rebel group on Yavin 4. We see more of the philosophical differences between her group and Saw Guerra's forces as he (voiced by Forrest Whitaker) inadvertently gets Ezra, Sabin, and Chopper to help him raid a secret Imperial cargo run with direct connections to the Death Star project. They've seen certain pieces of the puzzle but have no clue as to what this puzzle is supposed to be other than some form of super weapon perhaps.
Saw's growing fanaticism towards victory at any and all costs isn't helping either. He's convinced that unless they act decisively now, the Empire will win a war that Mon Mothma and the others believe has yet to start. Ezra may seem to agree with him (given his huge desire to free his home world Lothal) but upon seeing what Saw is willing to sacrifice, he may think twice about such measures.
Drama, excitement, mystery, great action, I'm glad one facet of the SW universe still knows how to give fans this.
