Saw it. It was enjoyable enough, but I really see where the critics are coming from. It's the first Star Wars movie that I consider a 'turn your brain off' action flick, with way too much going on and most of it not making a lick of sense. I will say that Rey and Kylo Ren are better than in the previous 2 movies, and that pretty much saves it from being a complete disaster, but overall it seemed like a big-budget fanfiction, and I've read much better fanfiction.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but the last 3 episodes have felt like a major step down from the first 3. I agree with you for the most part (I have only seen through Ep 5 so far). The first three episodes were part of a tight story, all killer and no filler, while 4 and 5 were basically "monster of the week" episodes that didn't drive the story forward. Episode 4 was definitely better, as it developed some humanity for the Mandolorian, but Episode 5 didn't really have anything interesting about it (except Ming-Na Wen, who I would listen to if she were reading the phone book, but her role was small and underdeveloped)

It reminds me of a mix of classic tv shows and modern ones where yes there is an overarching story but still the feeling like every episode could be someones first and so each episode can largely stand on its own as well. That's a little silly as it's not on Network TV but on a paid service and you have to choose to watch it but the old school thought process is still fun.

That is music to my ears. Saw it. Liked it. It does not completely ignore the Last Jedi, but mostly. Basically, if you just watch the good parts of The Last Jedi (the scenes with Luke, Rey, or Kylo Ren) and ignored the rest, you're set.

Went to see RoS last night since my father in law took everyone as a gift. I went in with extremely low expectations (if any at all). I must say my expectations were well and truly met. I felt absolutely nothing. At all. Not even that brief little unavoidable thrill upon hearing the first note of the iconic theme as suddenly the opening crawl begins. Nothing. From what I could gather, neither did anyone else in the audience (which was unexpectedly only about exactly half full). I didn’t observe a singly gasp, or laugh, or sob. With the exception of my wife. She was the only one within notice. I felt nothing. Not entirely true... I was slightly moved by chewie’s reaction to some bad news, and for just a second I was drawn into the exchange between a certain son and father (but I’m a sucker for such). But that’s it. All I can say is THANK GOD for John Williams. That and... f*** Disney, f*** Kennedy, and f***Johnson (twice).

Interesting (but not entirely unexpected) comments on RoS, batlaw, but please watch the language. This is a family friendly, workplace safe community. As such, you'll see that I have censored your above post slightly. I hope you understand. Thanks.

Saw it on Thursday night in IMAX 3-D with my lady and then again on the regular screen on Sunday with my Mom.
I really enjoyed it. There were things I would have done differently had I been doing it, but I really enjoyed the ride.

Has anybody ranked the Star Wars movies on this thread? Here are my rankings, for now:
1. The Empire Strikes Back 2. Star Wars (or A New Hope, if you must) 3. Revenge of the Sith 4. Return of the Jedi (I could easily make this #3 - I am really torn) 5. The Last Jedi (I am tempted to move this down to #7 below the other prequels, but I will leave it here for now. I need to watch it again, I suppose). 6. Attack of the Clones 7. The Phantom Menace 8. The Force Awakens
Part of me wants to swap #1 and #2, but I'll stick with these rankings. I think they're right as to how I feel as of today.
EDIT: After seeing rberman's post, I'd probably stick Solo and Rogue One in maybe just barely ahead of The Last Jedi.

Dumb question, I'm sure, but assuming that #11 (RoTS) is Revenge of the Sith, what is #6 (RoS)? Rise of Skywalker. Just to show you how out of it I am these days, I didn't even realize that that had gotten released. For some reason, I thought it was coming out next week.

Saw Rise of Skywalker with my daughters this morning. It was fine for what it was, a wrap-up to the story that George Lucas started 40+ years ago, and I enjoyed it well enough. A lot of the themes of the original trilogy (discovery of one's true self, finding "family" and belonging with others not related by blood, etc.) were present here, but there were no real surprises. One misdirection had me almost walk out of the theater in disgust, but they quickly revealed the nature of it and I settled back into my seat, but that was my only emotional reaction to anything in the film.
I didn't feel it was as "big" as Infinity War/Endgame (this is likely due to me having grown into more of a Marvel fan in the years following my seeing the original trilogy, as Star Wars didn't really stick with me in my 20s and 30s), but it certainly didn't suck the life out of the franchise like the Game of Thrones finale (different medium, to be sure, but one that is applicable as a comparison).
In my ranked list of Star Wars movies (and I'm not including Rogue One or Solo, only because I haven't seen either of them), this is solidly in the middle. The original trilogy films are at the top (ESB, NH, RotJ), and this is jockeying with Force Awakens in fourth and fifth places, followed by Last Jedi and the prequels, all of which are in no kind of order but rather just festering in a pile at the bottom of the dumpster.

Disney and Lucasfilm have honored Riley Howell, the young man who sacrificed his life to save others in the UNC Charlotte shooting earlier this year. When they learned he was a lifeling Star Wars fan, they wanted to do something as a tribute to his heroism and sacrifice when he charged and tackled the shooter at UNC Charlotte preventing him from killing more people. from the NPR article on this: The book his character wrote was seen in Rise of Skywalker as the book compiled by Luke that Rey was trying to decipher and learn the location of the Wayfinder from. Here is a pic of Riley as a kid with a lightsaber and the letter Lucasfilm sent to the family. Some fans may have issues with the Star Wars content Disney put out, but this is something they did right as caretakers of the property. -M
