I've never speculated though just last week saw some I already had that were underpriced and I'm going to sell online.
I bought 2 copies each of the Acclaim / Valiant # 1's, to get both the regular and painted covers. The painted ones all fit together like a big poster.

Y'know, I've been thinking about it - not so much comics, but TPBs and hardcovers, which can go up in price exponentially really fast and very, very few people seem to be buying them for speculative purposes.

The last couple of books I took a gamble on paid off quite handsomely. I sold a Midtown Spidey #700 for $225 (cost $12) and a New 52 Batman #1 for $60 (cost $2.50 thereabouts since I bought 150 copies and am down to my last 5). I'm keeping these.
I plow some of these profits back into buying my own comics of course, which means the last 300 or so new issues I bought basically paid for themselves.

Oh yeah, I remember buying about 10 Spawn #1's. Although there were over a million printed, I happen to move them over the years. But certainly for not much more than cover price.

I remember seeing it in Wizard for $30.00. I had one but sold my copies when I saw the prices easing down...now you can get a NM #1 for $5. The B&W cover gets a bit more respect...well not from me because I sold that too (own zero Spawns now, take that McFarlane...)

I think that's speculator driven, and temporary. What happens when the volume goes back to print? I don't think buying a TPB for a high speculators price will ever pay off in the long run, although dumping your trades for a huge markup when everyone else goes crazy probably will. I have gotten rid of a few trades. One I remember in particular was the TMNT softcover volime from Mirage. I think I sold it for $160, which would have paid for about five of the IDW hardcovers at the discounted Amazon rate.

They let books go out-of-print as a carrot for retailers who are savvy with the online market to make up with their rushed collected editions. (There was a Marvel tpb once that actually collected an issue that hadn't been released yet. The issue came out the week after the tpb had been released. I can't remember what book it was, but retailers were furious.)
They also do a yearly 4th Quarter firesale to facilitate books going out-of-print. Most retailers just offer the books at severely discounted prices to their customers, but if they hang on for awhile, you see some of those books offered at ridiculous prices online in a few months.

Yeah, I've never gotten that. They are kind of expensive to start with, and they are technically reprints anyway, and when they eventually do go back to print, I can't imagine one printing having a premium over the next. So in the long run it's going to be worth a bit less than cover, just like any other HC reprint of material that tends to stay in print. Now, if it were extra premium, like a giant slipcase with a signature and sketch, I can see that having appeal long term, but they tend to have high prices right out of the gate as well. But an average quality HC omnibus type thing of common material, I don't see it working for speculative purposes long term. They may go for inflated prices for a couple years, but by the time a Marvel HC is selling for a thousand dollars online, they'll likely decide it's time for a second run at the printers.

I can see the Omnibus' becoming valuable (I have two so far: Lee/Kirby FF Vol.2 and Lee/Buscema Silver Surfer) seeing as how they're designed to have a limited print run. I keep telling myself that I need to get them while I can, but having much of the stuff in Masterworks and digital already, stays my hand.

There were wads of copies lying around right up until the TV announcement. I bought my copies off ebay last month from dealers who were selling in lots of 10, which cinched it for me that they were extras ordered to get the chase variant. At the time there were 5 or 6 dealers with lots of ten copies each. I happened to be on ebay looking at Rat Queens #1 when the announcement came through, and there was still one dealer who had a lot of 10 copies available for $59.99 Buy It Now. And plenty of other single copies around for $4-6 plus shipping. Those all vanished instantly. Now they're already pushing $20 each. I just checked Mile High and out of 8,000,000 alleged back issues, there are no Rat Queens in stock. Here's a FYI for anyone interested in the sass and sorcery of Rat Queens, their very first appearance was a 7 5 page exclusive in this:- This preview comic book was a Image Expo 2013 Exclusive and was only available at the expo. But I believe the RQ story inside is an original one. Might be good to get a copy as it's current price is more than #1...

Gen13 was so popular when it first came out but their first appearance was Deathmate Black, the Valiant/Image crossover. It was probably because Image had so many problems getting their books out on time that Deathmate preceeded Gen13 #1.

Every time I consider getting a new title, I speculate as to whether or not I'll like it...?
