July 1999. The Moon breaks away from the Earth, according to Gerry Anderson. Prince is out partying like it's 1999. In theaters: American Pie, Blair Witch Project, Eyes Wide Shut. On tv: X-Files, The Simpson, That 70s Show, Ally McBeal, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, Will & Grace, News Radio, Home Improvement, NYPD Blue, Law & Order. My comic selections: Thank Kirby for James Robinson and Alan moore; or, I might not have been reading much of anything. Well, there were some other indie comics, at this time, ad the wait for another Hellboy series. Grendel presented its darkest story of all: Devil's Child, featuring the lost years of Stacy Palumbo, between the events of Devil By The Deed (the original Hunter Rose story, after the Primer stuff) and Devil's Legacy (the regular series opening storyline), written by Dian Schutz. Stacy's life was pretty dark and horrifying and this really shows why. Not a book I've revisited, more than once.

November 1999:
Tomorrow Stories #4 This wasn't my favourite of Moore's ABC line - that would be Promethea - but it was an entertaining anthology series. I liked the Cobweb and Jonni Future (who didn't appear in this issue) features best but none of them were bad. Maybe Jack B. Quick was a little annoying, but that's probably because I've always found precocious children annoying in fiction.
Yeah #4 This was a series aimed at young girls, written by Peter Bagge and drawn by Gilbert Hernandez, so obviously I wasn't part of the target audience, but I would read anything I could find with Jaime or Gilbert Hernandez's name on it. As I recall, it was pretty fun, even for a late-30s male like myself, though of course I have no idea how successful it was with the children it was meant for.

I'm really into reading comics from this time, mostly Marvels. X-Men Hidden Years #1 is sort of responsible. Someone gave my boyfriend a free copy of it and Avengers #1 1/2 (I didn't see it listed but it seemed to be out at the same time as Hidden Years #1), he stuck them on a shelf in his office where years later I ran across them and he said I could have them if I wanted them. I sought out Hidden Years #2 etc. and here I am. from on sale Oct. 1999: Avengers #23 (Perez) Marvel Mystery Comics #1 (golden age reprints) New Warriors #3 Thunderbolts #33 (I like Bagley's art) Uncanny X-Men #375 Wolverine #145 X-Men #95 (Alan Davis) X-Men Hidden Years #1 (The magic comic that got through to me) X-Men Unlimited #25 from on sale Nov. 1999: Captain Marvel #1 Fantastic Four #25 (starting on this title here, Dr. Doom) Legends of the DC Universe 80-Page Giant #2 (I love almost all of these) Thor #19 (starting on this title here but have read #21-25 first out of order) Thunderbolts #34 Uncanny X-Men #376 Wolverine #146 X-Men #96 X-Men Hidden Years #2
