Also just found out, RIP to Rene Auberjonois, best known for his roles on Star Trek DS9 and Benson. He was 79. -M Also the original Dago Red, Father Mulcahy, in the movie version of MASH. Great actor. He was the Fool to Lee J Cob's King Lear, on Broadway, in the longest running production of it (on Broadway) and one a Tony for Coco, opposite Katherine Hepburn. And that's in less than 10 years as a professional actor! Lest we forget, in our world, he was the voice of Desaad and Kanjar Ro.

RIP Pete Frates. fellow BC alum and initiator of the Ice Bucket Challenge to make people more aware of ALS from which he suffered. He passed today at age 34. IT's ironic, because I just saw in my alumni mag this past weekend that BC is opening a new baseball facility this spring dedicated and named after Pete, which now sadly he won't be able to be part of the celebration in his honor.

RIP to singer Marie Fredriksson, of the pop duo Roxette, at age 61. For the last 17 years, Fredriksson had been battling brain cancer, which progressed to a point in 2016 that Roxette cancelled a tour. Prior to that, Fredriksson would perform on stage, seated, to conserve her energy.
Fredriksson was the daughter of a factory worker and a postman, and grew up in a small village. Daycare was unavailable; so, her father took her around on his route and sang to her, which fermented a love of singing in her. After singing in some bands, she and Per Gessle formed Roxette, in 1986. Their breakthrough in the US came in 1988, with their second album, Look Sharp. An American exchange student heard the song, "The Look," while in Sweden and bought a copy and brought it home. He gave it to a local radio station to play and the response was phenomenal and soon spread to other stations. The video entered heavy rotation on MTV and the album became a top seller. The Look reached number one on the Billboard charts and another single, "Listen to Your Heart" also hit number one, in 1989.
Fame continued as Touchstone Pictures and EMI approached the duo about contributing a song to the movie Pretty Woman. They contributed "It Must Have Been Love," a previously recorded song, as they didn't have time to write a new song. It was initially rejected, then the producers came back re-requesting it, with a minor alteration to remove a reference to Christmas. The song went on to spend 17 weeks in the Top 40 and 2 weeks at Number 1.
The duo followed up with Joyride, their next album. The title track became a number 1 hit, their last in the us. With the changes in music in the early 90s, Roxette found their exposure in the US waning, but they continued to be popular throughout Europe. Fredriksson and Gessle both toured together and worked on solo projects.
In September, 2002, Fredriksson was jogging with her husband, when she complained of feeling ill. She collapsed in her bathroom, after a wave of nausea, cracking her head on a fixture. She suffered a fracture and concussion and was taken to hospital. There, a tumor was spotted, on the back of her brain. It was successfully removed, but found to be malignant. Radiation and chemo followed and Fredriksson recovered. Treatment side effects included blindness in one eye, loss of mobility, partial loss of hearing, and even temporary loss of speech. She made few appearances over the next 4 years, apart from accepting an honor from the King of Sweden.
In 2008, the band returned to touring, with Fredriksson remaining seated, to sing, while explaining to the audience about her limitations. However, her voice was as strong as ever.
As you can tell, I was a fan. Like everyone else, I first heard the band on MTV and then the radio, with "The Look. It had a great sound, she had a great voice and they harmonized well. It also had a lot of energy. I bought the album, which was fantastic and also bought Joyride, on its release. Just wonderful music. The song, "The Look," plays on our music feed, at work, occasionally, which helps keep me energized, when it comes on.

Philip McKeon, former child actor in the late '70s and early '80s has died at the rather young age of 55. He was probably best known for his role in the sitcom Alice, playing the titular character's son, and for being Nancy McKeon's older brother.

I think he was in the somewhat more serious movie that inspired the sitcom, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore as well. not exactly. . he's playing the character from the film, Tommy. . but in the film it was played by actor Alfred Lutter (who also played "Ogilvie" - the brainy kid - in the "Bad News Bears" films.
interestingly, Lutter *was* in the pilot as Tommy - and you sometimes catch that episode in reruns. . but McKeon was cast to play the TV version of Tommy as of series pick up.
the only actor who was in both the film, and the TV series, "Alice" , that was based on the film - was Vic Tayback - who played Mel Sharples in both versions.
to me the most interesting thing is that the actress who played "Flo" in the movie, was Diane Ladd. Polly Holliday played her on TV, but when Flo left the TV series to go on to her own spin off? Who replaced her was an old waitress friend of Mel's, Belle - played by. . . Diane Ladd.

RIP to former child actor Phillip McKeon (older brother of Nancy McKeon), at age 55. McKeon was best known for playing Linda Lavin's son, Tommy, on the sitcom Alice. He started out as a child model and actor and was working on Broadway, where Lavin saw him and recommended him for the part of Tommy, in Alice. He worked in acting until the early 90s, then drifted into other things, eventually working in radio. He died after a long illness, according to obituaries.

. . but in the film [Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore] it was played by actor Alfred Lutter... Right! And remember who played Tommy's tough-talking friend? Yep, Jodie Foster...who would also appear in Scorsese's next film: Taxi Driver.

Danny was great in the The Last Don (a three part, TV Mini-Series) as Don Domenico Clericuzio and that's was a classic Danny role back in 1997.
