Oh man, Neil Innes.
"A very sweet man, much too nice for his own good", is how John Cleese remembers him.
I grew up on The Beatles and Monty Python and Innes had strong ties to each - in fact, there's enough of an overlap between The Rutles and The Beatles that seeing Innes perform about 15 years back on stage produced a very eerie sensation for me.
Innes got screwed over a lot during his career - ATV sued him and his lawyers caved because even though they were almost certain to win the suit, they didn't want to pay legal fees. Once they gave away Innes rights they demanded that he write them another album to make up for what they perceived to be their loss. Eric Idle seems to have resented Innes for the credit he deservedly received for The Rutles so much so that when Innes did the brilliant follow-up Archeology in 1996, Idle made sure to remind him that he was he who owned the group and that Innes had better make sure he followed the law to the letter when it came to his plans. When Idle did Spamalot, he also didn't pay Innes the royalties he had earned for writing much of the music from Holy Grail (Innes wrote the tune for "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" from Meaning of Life which was used in Spamalot and most of the music from Holy Grail).
I followed him online and the recurring thread that runs through his career is how nice and personable he was. I ordered some of his CDs from his website and he made sure to include an autographed photo as a thank you. I also noticed that his wife had signed out the package for shipping. A real down to Earth couple who seem to have been treated horribly by anyone who realised how easy it is to take advantage of nice people without access to high priced lawyers.
As a musician, without exaggerating for effect, I'd actual rate him higher than John Lennon as a lyricist and I say that as the biggest Beatles fan there is. Innes was simply just that brilliant.

Aw..................poop. Syd Mead too? His movie design work overshadows his long work in industrial design, from Ford, to Phillips Electronics, to Sony and more. The man carried on the traditions of such forward thinkers as Normal Bel geddes and Raymond Loewy, which is what brought him to the attention of Ridley Scott. That was the beauty of his work; there was a real practical utility in it, yet it was still forward-thinking and imaginative.

I've been seriously depressed about Neil Innes since I heard about him yesterday. Definitely a shock.

And here's another musical one to be depressed about: jazz musician Jack Sheldon died yesterday at the age of 88. For a bunch of us of a certain age, he's best known as the guy who sang the Schoolhouse Rock bits, the memorable "I'm Just a Bill" and the catchy "Conjunction Junction."

He's one of my favorites and I seen these two cartoons so many times that I could recite it in my sleep. I'm Just a Bill is a personal favorite of mine and his contributions to education in a small way helps.

Spoofing his old job on the Simpsons....
One of my favorites; Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla....
We just lost Bob Dorough (Three is a Magic Number), in 2018, Grady Tate (Naughty Number 9), in 2017, and Blossom Dearie (Figure 8) preceded them in 2009. That just leaves Lynn Ahrens(Noun, The Preamble) of the really prominent singers & songwriters.
