I'm going to say it... Todd Mcfarlane's interpretation of Spider-Man is nearly as brilliant as Steve Ditko's and John Romita's. There. I said it. Paging shaxper. Stat!!!

I liked the early Image guys art. They were good poster style artists. However they were not too good at storytelling. Their art was a bunch of poses & did not convey action IMO.

Though I know of several fans who wouldn't mind if Chris Hemsworth were bare... -M Ah, yes,the hammer of Thor... That'd be a short list of worthy dates on tinder.

What about Ron Frenz? Is he considered to have just been aping Ditko? I thought Frenz was a solid artist who drew in the Marvel House style. Not aping, but not a break from the Ditko/Romita tradition. MacFarlane brought something new to the look of Spider-Man

I found Frenz's take refreshing after Jim Mooney and others who followed Romita's designs. McFarlane's Spider-Man was certainly striking and I remember enjoying his work very much, in the main title at least.

Ha. I've never saw what was so special about his art. Me, either. He's a wretched visual storyteller. I want more than 20 pages of poster art when I lay my money down. Cei-U!

I also want Mary Jane to look like Mary Jane, not just "generic buxom comic-book girl #23, only with red hair".
But then I'm not one to criticize McFarlane's Spidey overmuch... one issue was enough for this customer.

I never have read any of Todd McFarlane's comics but have of course seen lots of samples of it online (though apparently not enough to have an idea of what his Mary Jane looked like). I think his stuff is far, far from the worst of that era of superhero comics art but still a part of the whole aesthetic that prevailed at the time, and as such not my kind of thing at all.

Just to clarify - when I praise Mcfarlane's Spider-Man, I'm referring to the character and not everything he happened to draw while penciling the series. I think he absolutely nailed most of Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery but I wouldn't claim that Mary Jane was one of his strong points.
