Mister Marvel the Amazing Marvel ?

Let's see, Captain Marvel debuted in Whiz comics in 1941, had his own title in Captain Marvel Adventures etc. from the 40's onwards, until Fawcett ceased publishing it after the court battle with DC, sometime in the early 1950s '53 I think), so a 13ish yer period of Captain Marvel being the main way people referred to the characters. (and even then when Gomer Pyle used the term Shazam it lead to people thinking of the character more than if someone had said hey look Captain Marvel).
When DC revived the character, it was under the title Shazam, and that was how a lot of people started referring to the character, it was how he was referred to in the love action Filmation series and all the Filmation animated series that featured him, even though his name was still technically Captain Marvel, Shazam was the reference in the consciousness of the mass market. That was in 1973; it's now 2019, so for nearly 50 years now (46 and counting) Shazam has been the term that has been used to refer to the character whatever the actual name has been, and in the last 5 or so years DC has simply gone with the name most people know after 40 years of use rather than fighting a battle that was already lost.
So I get the desire to champion the use of Captain Marvel, but the reality is Shazam has been what the character has been known by for over 2 generations (going on 3) and holding on to Captain Marvel is simply a sign we've lived through all those generations and are now old, and clinging to it is probably putting us on the wrong side of history. I really do think it's a Liberty Valance thing, and Shazam has been used repeatedly (i.e. often enough and long enough) that it is here to stay. There I Said It!

This is slightly off-topic (but in a similar ballpark), but regarding public perception, I do smile when you have folk who say things like, "Doctor Spock? That's the pointy-eared character from Star Wars, right? Oh no, sorry, wrong, it's Doctor Who, isn't it?"

I knew who Captain marvel was in 1973 when I bought the DC Shazam book, and most fans I knew understood the legal stuff of why the book wasn't titled Captain Marvel. We all knew Shazam was the old wizard. He was and remained to be Captain Marvel. His books just couldn't carry that name. It wasn't that hard to understand. The public at large might not get this, but do any readers not know he is Captain Marvel, not Shazam?

Just one in my own social circle. This was about 2 years ago. This person is now 24 years of age, so it's a generational thing for some.

Sure we did, but 40 some odd years later that's not really the case anymore, except for those who were around in '73 or have chosen to delve into that kind of history. Just like we all know it's facial tissue when people use the term Kleenex to refer to it, but (almost)no one blinks because Kleenex has passed into common usage for that particular product (and the ones that do make a big deal about i simply get an eyeroll form most people). Shazam has passed into common usage for that particular character and most arguing the point about Captain Marvel are going to get the eyeroll form ost people because it has been accepted into common usage by the larger audience. -M

No eye rolling to or from me because none of what I have said should be treated with anything other than levity.

I don't care if he is called Capt Marvel or Capt Thunder or Shazam! I just want some good stories featuring the character...

I've given myself a headache explaining to non-comics fans the different Captain Marvels between the three companies that have used the name.

All those wasted hours watching Star Trek, waiting for Leonard Nimoy to drop some pearls of wisdom regarding child-rearing ...

I do vividly remember excitedly waiting for him to appear on a 20/20-type show and being really disappointed that it wasn't Leonard Nimoy….

Funny how no one at DC can make him work, while Jerry ordway, who wrote the longest run of the character, outside of Fawcett, can't get work there. Think the two might be related?

Ordway's Power of Shazam! was the best Shazam series in modern times. Just re-read the graphic novel that started the series the other day and it holds up well. It is timeless IMO.
