The cover contest is in need of a tie breaker for anyone who hasn't yet voted.

I'm a big,big fan of poetry, but one of the most highly regarded 20th century poets that I just cannot get into is Ezra Pound. Recently, I was reading about Pound's life on Wikipedia, because a friend of mine, who studied his work as part of an English Literature degree, urged me to do so, and I notice that he came from the town of Hailey, Idaho...which immediately made me think of Slam_Bradley . I know Idaho's a big place, but is that anywhere near you, Slam? I haven't read much Ezra Pound but I do remember liking a few poems of his we had to read in school - in Canada we were/are so colonialised that we had American textbooks for "English" Literature back in the 70s, so we were taught more American than British (let alone Canadian!) authors. The only one I could come up with after a quick search was:
In a Station of the Metro
The apparition of these faces in the crowd: Petals on a wet, black bough.

Yeah, that's quite a famous poem of Pounds. It really doesn't do much for me though -- it just doesn't move me or speak to me. It's brevity makes it rather like a Japanese haiku though, which is a poem form that I love. But, whereas the English translations of classical haikus by the likes of Matsuo Bashō or Kobayashi Issa are fantastic, Pounds' short poem above leaves me cold. In fact, if we're talking about western poets dabbling in the haiku form, I'll take Jack Kerouac over Ezra Pound any old day of the week... In my medicine cabinet the winter fly has died of old age Missing a kick at the icebox door It closed anyway The castle of the Gandharvas is full of aging Young couples

Are all three of those Kerouac? I'm impressed - Loved the first two, and only exclude the third because I don't know what Ghandrarvas means.

He wrote hundreds of so-called American Haikus. A Ghandrarva is a mystical being from Bhuddism -- a nature spirit, I believe. Kerouac was something of a Bhuddist, you see.

As of last year fireworks are finally legal once again in Iowa.
Of course the first year back, some people went whole hog with it and some didn't appreciate it affecting their sleep, pets, etc.
Some cities enacted their own ban or instituted a certain time frame to shoot them off.
My city of Ankeny still allowed them.
Sophie and I got in the car and drove about a half mile west of our neighborhood to the high school and had a nice 180 degree view looking west. The neighbors were putting up a nice display. Sophie had a smile on her face and kissed me. She wasn't afraid at all. She's the only dog I know that loud sounds don't freak out. Pretty sure a shotgun would probably startle her, but probably not a rifle.
It was a nice 4th.
Hope y'all had a nice 4th as well !

Neighbor / Friend / Murdered
I got home around 2am last night -- and couldn't sleep and tossing and turning and all that and, then I've logged in to post my Cover for the Cover Contest and slept a bit and got up.
So, I decided to get some coffee and a little chow and couldn't because the lead investigator of the Police Department had a lousy speech and couldn't understand a word that he spoken.
So, I contacted my brother and he told me that a man/neighbor that lived right below me was murdered between 2am to 7am this morning and taking the rest of the day to sort things out an investigate the whole matter and I'm so shocked and utterly in disbelief to see a man that I knew very little about got murdered and I hardly know his wife at all -- she is an anti-social type that rather to be left alone.
He gave me a complete rundown -- they have to investigate his condo, the space of 100 feet from all directions, both garbage and recycle containers and no one is not allowed to leave the area -- if you have to work -- the police advises you to call work and call in sick and/or take a day of vacation.
I'm really upset to learn this and I'm really in total loss of words of learning a Neighbor and a Friend was murdered in the last few hours that leave me totally speechless and shocked.
I even said "Hello" and on my way to a party later on. So sad, to learn this ... and reporting this in a heavy heart today.

Had my first follow-up appointment with the surgeon after my retinal reattachment last Friday night, and everything is progressing as hoped. I'm getting a little more vision back every day and he said that should start to accelerate over the next 10-14 days. As well, I've been cleared to go on vacation tomorrow (my younger daughter was ECSTATIC to hear that when I got home this morning), and I am even legally allowed to drive (although my wife took my car keys to ensure that I don't even consider it).
All in all, feeling really blessed this morning.
@mechagodzilla - sorry to hear about your neighbor. I can't imagine how scary that must be, to have something like that happen so close by. Hope you are able to weather this storm and return to some semblance of normalcy soon.

The Captain - Congratulations on the good news ! Very glad to hear it.
MechaGodzilla - Very sorry to hear this ! I had a similar situation with a neighbor when I lived in California. Yes, it can be quite shocking. As I was pulling out of our cul-de-sac I saw SWAT members hiding and putting their fingers to their mouths giving me the ssshhhh sign as I slowly left for work. There was a murderer hiding and they were trying to find him. I found out later, he was friends with a couple of guys that rented at the far end by the street. They hid him in the trunk of a car for 3 days and the cops never found him. Scary !

The Captain , happy to hear things are getting better. Are they still talking about surgery ? Thanks! As for surgery, I already had that done last Friday night, and now I'm in recovery mode now. They didn't hesitate to send me to have it done, as they said I risked losing more and more sight permanently every day it was delayed. I'm just grateful they caught it before we left for vacation, as I might have done something in the normal course of the trip to accelerate the detachment, which would have been really bad.
