Although I grew up Methodist and my wife grew up Jewish, I was able to introduce her to an old Jewish custom today - going out for Chinese food on Christmas. We had a delicious meal, lots of leftovers and no dishes to wash.

Shelley and I saw the Dick Cheney movie Vice today and both enjoyed it.
Christian Bale is truly amazing in his transformation and acting.
Amy Adams was also quite believable as Lynn Cheney.

People don't seem to realise that if you BELIEVE in Santa Claus, it WILL manifest him. That's the secret. A confidence scam basically. We're getting an education in this now with someone who needed to be believed in and "given a chance" (and another and another etc.), eventually they've eaten all the peanuts or crisps themself and nobody else gets any. Oprah was pushing 'The Secret' for awhile, not sure if she woke up yet on that though. Maybe when something bad happened to her and she hadn't drawn it to herself with her thoughts? Meanwhile... two turkeys (sans faces) for the oven here today. We will be eating bird for some time to come. I got a six pack of Jamaican Ginger Beer under my tree this year, and some shoes I actually like and fit perfect! What kind of shoes? Casual? Formal? Unique? So, all this time you have a) been wearing shoes you don't like, and b) wearing ill-fitting shoes?!!! Oh no!

One trip to the ER later...
Guess how I spent Christmas Eve? Turns out I didn't have sciatica. I sprained my back. I didn't even know that was a thing. All I know was that it hurt like a m****rf****r! I told the cute rookie EMT that it made me scream like a little girl and she laughed and said, "A lot of guys do, but you're the first one I've met who's owned up to it."
Anyway, the upshot is that I'm medically grounded from spending time on the computer for the next three to four weeks, and for only a few hours a day thereafter, as the movements necessary to do so are a significant factor in my current predicament, even with using voice recognition. So I'm not going to be much of an online presence for a while. I'll drop in every morning to check for messages and follow the usual threads but I won't be participating. When I do come back, I'll post the wrap-up thread for Classic Comics Christmas '18. In the interim, if shax or Roquefort would launch the Near Misses thread, I'd be most appreciative.
They've given me some kick-ass non-opiod painkillers so I'm comparatively pain-free for the moment. if I behave myself for the next few weeks, I have a shot at regaining my full mobility. My mobility is my independence, and I'm not giving up either one without a fight. That stubborn strain of Scotsman running through the Mitchell line, I suspect.
So Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Festive Saturnalia, etc, etc, and a premature Happy Ne Year, fellow CCFers! See you on the flip slide!
Cei-U! I summon my long-lost youth!
By the way, I'd be grateful if those of you I'm friends with on Facebook don't mention this there, as I have relatives who publicly overreact to any hint of bad news and I don't need their drama added to the situation. Thanks!

Thanks! Sheesh, that was a crappy way to spend Christmas Eve (except for the cute EMT ). Glad the drugs are helping, but take it easy. As another with Scottish lineage, I know how stubborn that can be. Rest, and get better. A back is a terrible thing to waste.

And mum's the word on the Facebook.

I've had two back surgeries and have had similar issues in the past.
Be careful and get as much bed rest as you can.

Back pain is the worst... I’m glad the painkillers are helping some, Kurt, but here’s hoping for a very quick recovery.

I'll just add my 'cei' that you get well so we will see 'u' more, Kurt! What kind of shoes? Casual? Formal? Unique? So, all this time you have a) been wearing shoes you don't like, and b) wearing ill-fitting shoes?!!! Oh no! My old shoes were great, just were wearing out. They call them loafers sometimes but I walked an actual mile or more in them one day (not good shoes for that but it was an unexpected event that led to it and my having no bus or taxi money with me). I did get a little money if I want to try and find books or music on sale today, boxing day, but maybe I'd better use it to catch up financially... I could just tell the giver the set of '70s Mister Miracle #19-25 coming is from that though.

Ouch, loafers for a mile-walk. Sorry you had no bus/taxi money. Hope you enjoy the money and how you spend it.
