Because of the industry I’m in I’ve had a cell phone provided by my jobs since 2000. And because of that very fact, if I ever get out, I’ll do all I can to not have to personally own one and just refer people to my wife’s phone number. I actually miss the days when people couldn’t reach you anywhere on the planet 24/7. Now iPods. Those are cool and I would buy one of those. Expanding on that very good point a tad... I organise some groups via Meet Up (one is a book club). Because people have mobile phones, it's so easy for them to renege on an RSVP, e.g. you'll get a text, 20 minutes before the start, saying, "I can't make it..." Whether or not the excuse is valid or feeble, they can reach you. Back in the day, you organised a meet via a landline. You'd call someone. You'd arrange something. And you'd meet. People showed up. It's too easy for a lazy or non-committed person to decide they're not gonna show up and send a text 20-30 minutes before a social occasion. And that sucks. What’s a text?

My wife and I just bought our first cell phone. I feel like Steve Rogers coming out of his iceberg! Because of the industry I’m in I’ve had a cell phone provided by my jobs since 2000. And because of that very fact, if I ever get out, I’ll do all I can to not have to personally own one and just refer people to my wife’s phone number. If you don’t answer and/or don’t check your phone they aren’t in contact with you. It’s really not hard.

My older brother has the same type of rules with his cell phone. He shuts it off around 7pm or so. He doesn't answer texts , if he answers them at all. Maybe that's why our relationship is lousy.

My wife has an Iphone, but I haven't had a cellphone myself since 2007 when I last had a job that required it. We are considering getting rid of the land line in the house after having had our number spoofed, in which case I would get a mobile. It started as more of a cost/benefit things than anything else (I didn't need a phone and wouldn't use it much at all as I was either home with a landline, at work, where I am not going to use it, or with my wife who had a phone, so for those rare times where one of those three things weren't true it just wasn't worth the cost to have one). Now it's just a matter of being used to not having one and not really wanting one.

There's also the cost. It's already too much paying for three phone lines as it is.

The meeting with the contractor Wednesday did not go well. For starters, they were 90 minutes late. Almost immediately they started throwing around a $40,000 estimate, double what the state budgeted, and saying the owners could make up the difference... and that ws just for the bathroom. No, you unethical bastards, the only reason the owners gave permission for the reno in the first place was because they wouldn't have to pay for it. It would take nearly three years of rent to recoup that much money! They also claimed the sub-floor around my toilet was rotting and spongy, something I would surely have noticed when I parked my 700-lb wheelchair on top of it--in other words, they were citing a non-existant issue to drive up the price. I sure hope the next contractor they send proves significantly less skeevy or I may have to forget about the whole deal.

That's nuts. $40,000 just for the bathroom? It sucks when contractors think they can pull one over on people. Good luck with future estimates, and the BBB can definitely be your friend to weed out some of the crooks.

It helps to have a family friend who is a plumber (and we have a roofer, and we used to have a mechanic too).

$40 thousand for a bathroom reno is absolutely ridiculous. We did a bathroom and kitchen reno a few years ago, so I can sympathize - it's not just the headaches in finding good and honest contractors, but just the stress of the entire process while it's all being done. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Sounds like those guys are trying to pull a fast one. We had our bathroom remade two years ago, and spared no expense... granted, I don’t know how much renovations cost in the US, but the total price tag came up to 20,000$ (Canadian). And that’s a bathroom in which everything was removed, all the way to the 2x4s, including all the plumbing.

Dear AllI'm taking a break from this forum due to personal issues and I felt it is the right way to handle that and I've informed Farrar that I'm withdrawing my participation to the last cover contest by deleting my own post. I felt it is important for me to take care myself, my brother, my own family, and my club is running full blast and I'm getting a lot of attention to things these days. I just feel that I need to move on from this site and I've don't know when I'm coming back. Thanks Everyone.

It's ok to take a break if you're busy or just not feeling the joy of participating, Mecha.
I think we understand.
Hopefully everything goes well for you during your break and we look forward to hearing from you down the road.
Take care and best wishes !

I was just buzzing through some old threads.
I'm a really snarky individual.
My condolences to all you who have put up with me for so many years.
