Most listened to songs of 2018 #21 - "It Don't Come Easy" - Ringo StarrThis is probably not going to show up next year. Not that it's a bad song. It's perfectly fine for what it is. But it shows up because of a few conversations (probably with Confessor). I had regarding Ringo and subsequent listening to his output. I honestly do think that Ringo is an underrated all-round performer.

Love that Ringo song. We had the 45 when we were kids, listened to it many times on our old suitcase-mono (which I see are now back in style?)

#20 - "My Funny Valentine" - Gerry Mulligan
I'm a big fan of Mulligan's work. The sound he was able to get out of the baritone sax was at once light and airy and strong and full. This is a great version of the jazz standard.

#19 - "Wait So Long" - Trampled By Turtles
I discovered Trampled by Turtles (I love that name) quite by accident through a short-lived website called Turntable.fm. While I don't love everything they do, they're always at least interesting. And I'm very fond of this particular track.

#18 - "Will the Wolf Survive?" - Los Lobos
Title track off the Lobos third album. The title for the album and the song was taken from a National Geographic documentary about wolves. The Lobos related that struggle to their own struggle to make it in music in the U.S. and remain true to their Mexican roots.
Great song by an under-appreciated band.

#17 - "Forgotten Coast" - James McMurtry
Has it really been over three years since McMurtry's last album? I really like this guy. And this is just an infectiously fun song. McMurtry sings about his part of the world and makes us want to hang out with him, catch a few fish, drink a few beers and sing along to the resonator.

#16 - "If We Were Vampires" - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Ummm...yeah...this song will just rip your guts out. Isbell and the 400 Unit are back with an absolutely beautiful heart-rending song.
Have I mentioned that Isbell is the best songwriter working today...because he is.

#15 - "Carryin' on This Way" - Dale Watson
The only surprise here is that it's this low. I'm willing to bet that this song has been in my Top Ten every year since this album dropped in 2010. I'm pretty sure I came across this on YouTube before the album actually came out because Dale wrote it long before he released it. This is part of my "Damn I'm Old" song-cycle.

#14 - "It Isn't Gonna Be That Way" - Robert Earl Keen
This one came up on my Discover feed at some point. Nice cover by Keen off the Steve Forbert tribute album. I'm a little surprised it's this high. But I definitely did listen to it quite a bit.

#13 - "Atlantic City" - The Band
Yeah...I know it's Springsteen's song. Don't care. I like the cover by The Band better. I was actually pretty late coming to appreciate The Band. I was familiar with them, but never gave them much thought. I actually came to them from Levon Helm's later solo work.
Just a great song that tells a great story and ruminates on life and death. And I love the instrumentation on this one. And yes, I recognize that this wasn't the classic The Band. But I'm not a huge fan of Robbie Robertson as a person. So that's fine.

Most listened to songs of 2018 #13 - "Atlantic City" - The BandYeah...I know it's Springsteen's song. Don't care. I like the cover by The Band better. Do you know the Bruce Springsteen album Nebraska that this song originally came from? I'm really not a Springsteen fan, but the lo-fi Americana and stark Dust Bowl folk on that album is fantastic. It's a Springsteen album for people who don't generally like Springsteen.

I just really like the way The Band handled this song. Between Levon's vocals and him on the mandolin and Garth Hudson on accordion.

#12 - "Steak Night at the Prairie Rose" - Mike and the Moonpies
The title track from what is probably my number two favorite album (or maybe number one) of 2018. This is just classic country songwriting and theme. I don't think this live version is quite as solid as the album cut. But I prefer live videos if the sound is good. So there we go.

#11 - "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" - Drive-By Truckers
The fact that this one isn't in the top ten is astounding to me. This song blew me away when I first heard it on "The Dirty South." It glides right down the highway of cool and tells the story of some of the most formative music in American culture. And it is just rife with great lyrics.
"Dammit Elvis, I swear son I think it's time you came around Making money you can't spend ain't what being dead's about"
"Now Cadillacs are fiberglass, if you were me you'd call it quits"
