Wonder Woman #28: Shea Fontana delivers another ho hum issue--although there are a couple of nice moments. Wonder Woman is taking care of Etta (who was injured at her brother's wedding). There was a nice scene of WW realizing that those closest to her are mortal and will one day die-a fact that distresses Wonder Woman. The rest of the issue deals with an assassin attack (very nice to see this obscure 90s character) and the last page has more assassin types showing up. David Messina's art is hit and miss. Some panels look great while others look rushed and muddled.

Superman #29: interesting issue by Keith Champagne and Doug Mahnke. While I am enjoying the Rebirth Superman's status quo, I enjoyed this issue as it is about Superman and a threat (Lois and Jon do not appear). The splash page of Superman flying through Metropolis was beautiful.
Children all over Metropolis are being taken and Superman attends a support group for the parents, assuring them he is doing all he can to find their children. He thinks how awful it would be to lose his own son. I wasn't expecting the main villain or the villain/anti-hero/whatever he is now on the last page. (I don't follow the Green Lantern comics). The art is good although some panels looked over inked. Superman looked "super" and Mahnke does a great job with action sequences. His style enhanced the creepy tone of the story.

 Two new stories. First one by Dan Jurgens & Jon Bogdanove. And the second one by Steve Orlando & Rick Leonardi. Cover by Paul Pope. Based on Simon & Kirby's last work together in 1974:  Sandman fights against the dreams of a young child that threaten to break into our reality. He is helped by a silent superhero. Sandman attempts to wake the child to get the dream creatures to vanish. He discovers the hero was part of the child's dreams. The child? A young Jack Kirby. In the second story Jed Walker (from the 1974 series) dreaming about his grandfather. Sandman enters & helps reunite them in Jed's dreams. Both stories were enjoyable & were a nice tribute to Kirby's fertile imagination. The first story's last page made me smile when it was revealed that the dreaming child was Kirby himself. |

 #10. Written by Ryan Stegman. Art and Cover by Nathan Stockman. Peter & Annie fight the Lizard & Billy (the Lizard's son). The fight spills over into Oscorp where we find Normie has been taking the Goblin serum. Stegman takes over writing duties & does a great job keeping the family feeling of this title. Stockman's art is similar to Stegman's style. I really love the 2-3 issue arcs in this title. And the old fashioned feel it has. The FF is mentioned & I really want to see them appear in this title. 8/10. |

 #27. Written by Dan Abnett. Art and Cover by Stjepan Sejic. Aquaman & Dolphin continue their fight in the depths of Atlantis. Vulko is aided in his escape by the Widowhood. Mera goes to Garth to ask his help in breaking thru the magic barriers around Atlantis. The Widowhood plans to unseat Rath as king & place Mera on the throne... Man this book is awesome. Abnett has woven together so many threads to make this title a must read & one of DC's best titles! Add in Sejic's gorgeous art & this book is perfection. 10/10. My Favorite This Week! |

 #7. Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art and Cover by Jorge Jimenez. The villain: Kraklow. The heroes: The Teen Titans joined by Superboy. The TT love working with Jon. Robin is a little jealous. After they defeat Kraklow the Titans leave & Jon & Damian are pulled into another dimension... Another fun issue. Tomasi & Jimenez are just amazing on this title. They capture the voices of the characters so well. 8/10.

Superman goes up against Parallax... Champagne does a great job filling in for Tomasi. This threat only involves Superman. Jon & Lois do not appear in this issue. Looking forward to the conclusion next issue with Sinestro in the mix. 8/10. |

This tale of Volstagg as War Thor using the Ultimate Universe's Hammer is first rate. 8/10. |

 #27. Written by Tim Seeley. Art and Cover by Javi Fernandez. Nightwing & Huntress go up against Spyral. Meanwhile Shawn returns to her old life as the Defacer. Seeley returns Dick to his past in Spyral & ties in his New52 series Grayson. I am anxious to see how this turns out. 8/10. Great week for me. |

Star Wars #34  Written by Jason Aaron Art by Salvador Larroca Summary: Sana and Lando join forces on a galaxy hopping adventure of smuggling, and mayhem. Plot: While the forward momentum of the story is still dead in the water this one shot featuring Lando and Sana was a lot of fun. The characterization of Lando was great, really emphasizing his suave demeanor and Aaron really has his voice down pat as I swear I could hear Billy Dee Williams with every line written for Lando. On the plot side I really enjoyed the con Sana played on the Hutts, the pirates and the empire; the three way swindle was simple but clever and the action around it reminded me of the heist films of the 1940's which is a great style for a Star Wars book. Art: I loved Larroca's art all along, but in this issue I have to wonder if Billy Dee sees any royalties for his likeness being used, because that's exactly what he's done here:  And While he's used photo references frequently in the past it was usually well balanced, but here with the pairing between Lando( of whom he can draw from many references from the films) and Sana who is a new character with no film references the contrast is obvious. Grade:8/10 |

The action was really fun, and the characterizations of the Titans were good; I might need to check out the book after I initially wrote it off. |

Future Quest Presents #1  Written by Jeff Parker Art by Ariel Olivetti Summary: Space Ghost, Jan and Jace team up with the Herculoids to rebuild the mighty Space Force.
Plot: Parker continues his Hanna Barbara epic with this awesome team up between Space Ghost and the Herculoids. These were always my favorite heroes and through out the Future Quest story Parker really nailed these characters unique voices and in this quieter story he continues to build on those voices. Aside from that I loved the ghostly flash back that had all the throw backs to all the old Space Ghost villains; it was a fun nod and it created a great moment for Space Ghost and I can't wait to see more.
Art: Though I'd gladly take the Rude Dude anyday Olivetti's look is fantastic, though it's more detailed than the look of the cartoons it has a great sense of warmth to it that fits with he feel of the characters and the world they inhabit.
Grade:10/10 |

Oh dear. I just saw that James Robinson will be writing Wonder Woman. I'm expecting several characters will inexplicably become nasty and sarcastic for no reason and nobody will say anything remotely witty until Robinson leaves.
I hope this doesn't last long.

Oh dear. I just saw that James Robinson will be writing Wonder Woman. I'm expecting several characters will inexplicably become nasty and sarcastic for no reason and nobody will say anything remotely witty until Robinson leaves. I hope this doesn't last long. I don't know, I liked Starman a lot, and his JSA run was decent so I might give it a try but yeah not the most exciting announcement. I'd really love to see Wonder Woman written by someone like Gail Simone again. Not her per say(though I did enjoy her run), but definitely by a strong female writer. |
