Sad month for me; one whole comic, though it was a damn good one.

Amazing Spider-Man 189 Avengers 180 Captain Marvel 60 Fantastic Four 203 Iron Man 119 Marvel's Greatest Comics 81 Marvel Premiere 46 Marvel Tales 100 Marvel Team-Up 77 Marvel Triple Action 46 Micronauts 2 Ms. Marvel 22 X-Men 118 Here, but all as back copies. I did buy this one Marvel comic around this time 40 years ago though... I'd bought DCs and Gold key on my own before, but this might have been the first Marvel I'd ever picked out for myself and bought. Sorry for the terrible shock this might cause any Merry Marchers. By the end of the Spring of 1979 I was buying Star Wars regularly and trying out other titles!.

When the DC Explosion was announced, i saw it as possibly a way into getting to write comics (i had given up drawing them some time ago, but around this time i was getting alot of interest in both my art work and my writing from my HS teachers including getting to take a college level English Comp course). The Implosion shattered that dream, fo' sho'.
My interest in the Marvel Universe probably peaked around this time, so i probably began working on by Grand Marvel Timeline, the precursor to the many chronologies you see around the internet these days. I had ready access to a lot of cheap comics (5 cents apiece from a used bookstore/dry cleaner near my grandmother's house and a large back room of really cheap early Marvels (a full TOS and TTA run for a buck a book!). Last time i saw the thing, it was scores of pages of notes and a time line written out on about 20 those green accounting pages...

December 1978. The hot stuff during the holidays for my Junior year in high school: X-Men ruled the house, Warlord was swashing his sword though the crowd of comics along with John Carter nearing his end. Battlestar Galactica from TV to print YAY! Micronauts sales were a thousands time bigger than the toys were. Star Wars was going strong with Goodwin/Infantino (nyaaah and thrrrbbbt Confessor) while Avengers was full on greatness with the Perez/Byrne artwork. Wolfman/Pollard doing fun stuff with the FF. MOKF was finding new strength with Moench/Zeck. Iron Man was transistorized power from the team of Michelinie/Romita jr/Layton. It was a wonderful time for being a Marvel Zombie.
Avengers 181 Battlestar Galactica 1 Captain America 231 Captain Marvel 61 Defenders 69 FF 204 Godzilla 20 Iron Man 120 John Carter 22 MTU 79 MOKF 74 Micronauts 3 Nova 24 Peter Parker 28 Star Wars 21 Superboy and LOSH 249 Warlord 19 X-Men 119

Hm, yeah, December 1978. I had Avengers 181, Defenders 69, FF 204, Nova 24, Peter Parker 28 and, of course, MTU 79 - the oh-so-excellent Red Sonja issue. Up until the autumn of 1978, I had been on something of a hiatus from super-hero comics for about a year and a half (mainly reading Archies and funny animal comics), but by this time I was back into Marvel and DC big time - and almost all of the DCs I bought in 1978 were from the Whitman 3-pack bags. However, I was still one month away from discovering the excellence of X-men, Iron Man and Micronauts. That would come in 1979, which I think is one of the best years in super-hero comics ever.

Bought on the newsstand, or shortly thereafter: Avengers #181 Fantastic Four #204 Justice League of America #164 Micronauts #3 Superboy & the Legion of Super-Heroes #249 X-Men #119
Bought within the past few years: Captain America #231 Incredible Hulk #233 Master of Kung Fu #74
This was shortly after I discovered my LCS, so I was able to increase my pull list, though at age 9 going on 10, my income didn't allow me to get everything I wanted.

One lone, but important comic, as the original Golden Age Batman dies. I guess I was too busy watching Superman, at the movie theater.

Not much, this month, except the classic "Curse of Crime Alley, " from Denny O'Neil and Don Newton, for Detective #483. Batman revisits the place where his parents died, on the anniversary of his death, as he has done every year, meeting up with Leslie Tompkins, the woman who comforted the poor, shattered little boy. Leslie was introduced a couple of years earlier, in Detective #457 and she is here again, meeting up with the adult bruce, as Batman. Really good story and it was included in the Years Best digest book, a little bit later.

Oh, yeah. January 1979 - a pivotal month for me; I had a bunch of the comics in that list brutalis compiled, but three were crucial: Iron Man 121, Daredevil 158 and f-in' X-men 120. If I liked comics before, I was head-over-heels at that point.

I'd have been in 4th grade at this point. I think it was in the summer of 1979 that I finally discovered the local comic shop. By the way, I know it's late to point this out, but people are listing the comics with a cover date of 50 years ago, not the comics that actually came out 50 years ago, since the cover date is typically about 3 months ahead of the date the comic came out.
Anyway, here's what I got back in the day: Avengers #182 Fantastic Four #205 Justice League of America #165 Micronauts #4 Superboy & the Legion of Super-Heroes #250 X-Men #120
These I've bought relatively recently (within the past few years) as back issues: Marvel Two-in-One #50 Marvel Two-in-One #51 Shogun Warriors #3 Shogun Warriors #4 Thor #282
By the way, in looking at the covers in Mike's Amazing World, I see that Brave & Bold #149 has the Teen Titans. I'll have to check that out!

In January, 1979, I bought off the stands: From DC: Brave & Bold #149: Batman and the Teen Titans, by Haney & Aparo. Hey, I was still a teen, so I was justified in the Titans being a continuing favorite. But I'd have bought a Haney & Aparo B&B no matter the guest stars. DC Comics Presents #8: Swamp Thing was another long-standing favorite, so it was great to see him making another appearance. I remember digging the Murphy Anderson art on this one! From Marvel: Defenders #70: Never missed an issue (past #4). Godzilla #21: The entire series ranked high in last year's Classic Comics Christmas event! Marvel Premiere #47: Ant-Man's a big favorite, and I found myself appreciating this early legacy character, Scott Lang, in his second appearance. Shogun Warriors #4: I don't know why I was stuck on this series, but I bought every issue. Tomb of Dracula #69: Another entry in my Classic Comics Christmas listing. Once I got fully on board, I bought 'em all. What If? #14: One of my favorite Marvel series, but this was a let-down. Sgt. Fury in Space?! X-Men #120: I was solidly on the bandwagon.

Off the stands in those glorious days of January in the late 70s...
Daredevil #158 Green Lantern #115 John Carter #23 Marvel,Treasury Edition #21 (Fantastic Four) Savage sword #38 Savage sword #39 Shogun Warriors #3 Star Wars #22
...which is not a bad haul considering how few American comics we’d get in my hometwon back then. I was lucky that Savage Sword Conan was there month after month, but it was pretty much the only title we’d get regularly (apart from certain Archie books).
I can still smell that old newsprint mixed with the scent of cherry-flavoured pipe tobacco... It’s the smell of happiness!
