what about Mad magazine - style movie parodies and the like? Not strictly adaptations, but they usually follow the plot pretty closely.
And what about unacknowledged adaptations (or steals, to put it another way)? I'm thinking of one specific story that I think pretty obviously lifted the basic premise and a lot of other stuff from a novel but this was never stated openly.
Grand Dictator for Life of the Classic Comics Christmas
Have my 12 choices (I think) and now comes the trimming of the tree and working out their rankings. As these are PERSONAL choices it was a rather quick look up via Google and Mike's Amazing World to remind myself of those I grew up with for holding that special spot in my memories and heart. The top 5 came to mind easily and quicker than ever. It was the lower rungs which really took some more thought for me. I took this one to heart and made my decisions rather quickly this morning from instinct and remembrances from my youth. Really looking forward in seeing the rest of you working through your lists and going Oh, I hadn't thought of or seen that one! Will be some fun unwrapping going on this year for certain
My initial "short" list has 47 possibilities on it, and that includes entries that simply say Conan or Tarzan and haven't gotten to the point of determining which story lines or adaptations within that broad category I might want to include. And that's after about a dozen possibilities were eliminated after determining they weren't eligible after posing questions to Kurt. I have a lot of trimming to do and likely a lot of skimming through old favorites before making some tough decisions. Possible entries range from Alien to Zorro at this point.
"We cannot change the world until we change ourselves." -Christopher Wallace
"I see a comics culture that preserves and appreciates its past, but doesn't wallow in witless nostalgia." -Scott McCloud
“Humans beings always do the most intelligent thing…after they’ve tried every stupid alternative and none of them have worked” ― Buckminster Fuller
"Things happen all the time. Stories are how we arrange them to make sense of them." -Warren Ellis
My long list is between 19 and 26, depending on two questions I pmed to Kurt. The possibilities really are wide open with this one if you stop and think about it. The real challenge for me is not getting stuck in multiple adaptations of one property.
And, for those who are stuck, it might help to remember that 1970s Marvel did some extremely liberal adaptations of licensed properties that took on lives of their own.
