I wonder what the prices are like in the store, and if he has $1 bins? The one time I had a chance to go when I had a business trip to Denver a big snow storm hit and I wasn't able to.
Yes, he has (or had) dollar bins, but on non-bin books the prices in the store are no better than the website. Chuck is an equal-opportunity gouger.

I still get the Mile High mailing list email.. much of which is Chuck listening to himself talk about how amazing he is. This most recent one he was excited about taking in his 4,000,000th comic since he 'changed his pricing philosphy' in 2014. It's pretty interesting.. in the nicest possible way, he basically says he decided to stop selling to us (comic book fans) and start selling to collectors 'willing to pay a premium to have access to the largest comic book inventory in the world'.
In other words, he KNOWS his prices are ridiculous, but keeps them there anyway, because there's enough rubes that don't know better out there of him to make money.

So this is funny... Mycomicshop/Lone Star ALSO does a news letter... he must have wanted to make sure people know he's better than Chuck.. HIS newletter this week says they've graded 16 million comics since 2014 (4x as many as mile high)

I get them so I have the code if I need it, yes, but now and then I read it. Both are mostly pats on the back, but now and then there are interesting bits.

I recently got 2 comics for $5.50.
Chuck's out-of-stock premium price for the same books in lesser grade FINE is $102.00

That one was weird, he's turning the story around. Instead of "I couldn't compete with the guys moving merchandise at a high rate", he gives us this "they don't know what they're doing because they're amateurs" line. You could argue he's doing well because he keeps increasing prices and stock simultaneously, but how much of a profit does he actually make? He insists he's not in it for the money, so we're back to the premise of this thread. It's not a shop, and he only ever wanted to be the curator of a comics museum . Since it didn't exist, he created it. Kudos.
On the other front. Codes for LS? I've never even seen a reserved space, at any moment during the checkout process, where to input a code.

There is definitely somewhere to input a discount code in the Mile High online checkout (or there always was -- I haven't ordered from MH for about 7 or 8 years). In fact, I have never placed an order with MH without using a discount code because of their ridiculously high prices. I used to wait and watch the weekly emails until Chuck would announce a big, 50 or 60% off sale. Then I'd swoop in with that week's discount code and order a bunch of comics. Same goes for Lone Star/My Comic Shop, they too have a weekly discount code in their weekly emails, but their discounts are much lower than MH's, likely because their starting prices aren't so insanely overinflated. With MCS you get maybe 5% or 10% of a particular publisher or set of series each week.

In other words, he KNOWS his prices are ridiculous, but keeps them there anyway, because there's enough rubes that don't know better out there of him to make money. His argument is that you go to his website if you really need a particular issue. The prices are absurd, but there are plenty of alternatives available if you want more reasonable prices. It does have to be difficult to run a comics store. So much material is available free online, or at really cheap prices. That drives down prices of most back issues. Most stores can sell online, so you have to compete with all of them for readers who comparison-shop (and let's also recall ordinary people selling comics on Ebay.) And there's so much material that readers may be interested in, which can also be complicated by the different formats it's all available in, and how some significant material can go out of print.

Running a comic shop isn't rocket science. I worked in one for years and they're still going strong, growing every year. The secret? Work. It's that simple.
But with MH, the problem isn't what they do or skip doing, it's why they do it.

Well I learned a lot about Clarence the Cat in his latest newsletter but I'm still not moved to place an order.

I haven't heard anything about the cat for quite some time. I think it was replaced by a dog? I also don't find anything on the latest newsletter, can you provide a quote?
