Speaking of hats, why do state troopers wear the wide hats while city cops wear flat caps? Any reason for this?

Speaking of hats, why do state troopers wear the wide hats while city cops wear flat caps? Any reason for this? Congrats on the win, M. W. Gallaher. I suspect it because state troopers spend more of their time outdoors. The broad brimmed hats provide better protection from sun and rain.
