I can't recommend highly enough the Complete Monterey Pop Blu-Ray from Criterion. You get a nice restoration of the original film, plus a second disc with two more hours of performances that weren't in the film, plus a third disc with the complete sets by Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix. Plus the usual bushel of Criterion extras like commentaries, interviews, essays, etc.
The major revelation to me was Janis Joplin. I'd heard a few of her songs on classic rock radio and never saw the big deal (though I do like "Me and Bobby McGee"). When I saw her in Monterey Pop with a live performance of a slow blues number called "Ball and Chain", then I got it. As did Cass Elliot, who the camera catches in the audience sitting open-mouthed. After the song, they cut again to Cass saying "Wow".

I just saw The Last Waltz at the local theatre a few nights ago, and for the first time. My brother had the album back in the '70s but I never listened to it much, can't recall why now, since I liked all the artists that appeared on it. I enjoyed seeing the movie finally now after all these years. I thnk my favourite bit was Rick Danko (I believe it was) playing the fiddle, not on stage but sitting around somewhere with Robertson.

My favorite Last Waltz moment is with the Staple Singers on "The Weight". Mavis Staples just makes it her own.

I really like La La Land soundtrack. The whole movie was just very magical and i really want to rewatch it.

Haven't seen La La Land but I like musicals so maybe I should give it a try.
I just watched Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine (1993) a few nights ago and reading up on it later I saw that the soundtrack is highly rated in some circles and even received a few awards or nominations for certain awards. I thought it was OK but the thing is, it sounded to me like a complete rip-off of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. Anyone else have this reaction?

Nice to know that some regions were spared.  I'm glad you enjoyed it, but trust me, Skynrd loses its luster long before the 5000th listening... I’d be very happy to never be subjected to Skynyrd again. See also, Led Zeppelin, The Who, pretty much any “classic rock.” I will second that, apart from some of The Who. I spent 4 years in Georgia and South Carolina, during my Navy days and every damn day was Zeppelin and Southern Rock (mostly Skynard, Allman Brothers and 38 Special) I didn't mind any of that, until I heard it EVERY DAMN DAY! When I worked at a Destroyer Squadron command staff, the Administrative officer's wife was a DJ for the station I listened to, that I could most tolerate. She usually had to work when we had farewell parties and other functions but she made it to one and I got to harangue her about the stuff they played ad nauseum. She agreed; but said it was the market and they had to do it and all of the DJs hated it. The British Movie Pirate Radio (aka The Boat That Rocked) has a great one, that kicks off, with the film's opening, with The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night." John Hughes films were great for New Wave bands, especially Pretty in Pink. Valley Girl has a great one for early New Wave, especially Josie Cotton. I would second run Lola, Run as a good one. Similarly, Tom Tykwer's Babylon Berlin tv series has great music throughout, both period stuff and new material, including stuff from Bryan Ferry. Along those lines, last year's Irma Vep tv series, on HBO, had a great one, mixing all kinds of stuff, including Johnny & The Hurricanes' "Beatnik Fly. Robert Rodriguez had some good ones, including Desperado and From Dusk Til Dawn I was recently reminded of how good the music was (Disco and all) in the film Mother, Juggs & Speed..... And, of course, The Blues Brothers! |

Even BB 2000 has a great soundtrack....mediocre movie; but great soundtrack, especially their version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky." You're being pretty generous with "mediocre". I thought it was an absolutely godawful movie that nobody should ever watch. The one bit I did like was the zombie production number with The Beginning of the End's "Funky Nassau". |

Or Joe Morton's. They at least acquitted themselves professionally (and Morton's singing chops were an eye-opener). But no amount of acting talent can save phoned-in, sloppy filmmaking that just badly goes through the motions. |

Oh wow, right on. This is the place to be.
My favorite soundtracks . . . this is gonna be a fun challenge as I'm a big movie score lover. But I'll give it a shot. Too start, I would say the two that come right to mind that I listen two a lot are 1992 Dracula by Wojciech Kilar. Just a pure haunting and mesmerizing score. Masterful.
And Fly II by Christopher Young. A very under-rated masterwork of film music. Just smacks you in the face good.

Akira is a great one for all kinds of different moods and tones, plus the inventiveness of it, especially Kaneda's Theme.....
One of the really pleasant discoveries for me, was Michael Giacchino's soundtrack for The Incredibles. just loved that 1960s, jazzy throwback, as it captured that Jonny Quest-meets-Fantastic four feel. Lots of James Bond-style riffs, great atmospheric stuff, nice mix of things. Loved the end credit music...
