Careful. You're going to make me want to start another review thread! I've read through #60 and have to read the rest. I'm assuming this sentence about reading through #60 was just inadvertently taken from my post but with the quote tags removed. Sorry. Multitasking with family over for the holidays.

I had sort of resolved to start reading Rip Kirby, but the reprint books are outrageously expensive. Looks like I'll re-read Flash Gordon, Terry and the Pirates and Prince Valiant instead! If you find a reasonably-priced or online source for Rip Kirby, please share. I have this one that I picked up 50 or so years ago, but it's slim and the reproduction is horrible. They should call it Rip Off Kirby.

Crack open the comic strip collections, special edition hardcovers and Twomorrows books that I've been collecting for the last year. Which comic strips? The first couple volumes of Clover Press's new editions of Dick Tracy and the Dark Horse Comics He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

I'm hoping to finally (after many, many years) empty my to read milk crate. So I plan to try to stay away from buying much beyond my pull list (and anything interesting from the milk crate I need to follow through with) to do this. That'll allow me to make sure I'm organized and proceed forward in a better way.
Not sure I'll be able to do much with upgrading my boxes to plastic ones with my oldest daughter living in my attic, so that's a bit on hold for now.
I have a vague goal of having nothing I own to read when I turn 50 in 2025, but we'll see.

As always, my goal for 2024 is to have as much fun as possible with comics and with my friends in fandom.

For 2024:
Read the complete Heap from Hillman.
Complete my Jungle Gems or Jungle Junk? thread.
Complete a 6-page comics story, script and art by me.
Complete a comics-related article on a top-secret subject, for potential publication.
Complete a comics-related video on a subject familiar to some of those who've seen what I've posted here.
Sample a neglected comics genre, specifically, comics about healthcare professionals.

Here's my first quarter update. Reading Goals* Re-read some X-books (or in some cases, read for the first time). These are the comics that give me the most joy, so I want to mix them in with my new reading. Three possible reads within this are: (1) the latter part of the Silver Age X-Men run (starting around #40 or so), (2) original X-Factor (since 2023 was my big New Mutants binge), and (3) Claremont's X-Treme X-Men, which I previously only read to around #15 or #20. I re-read Dave Cockrum's first run and John Byrne's run, plus associated annuals and guest appearances. I haven't read any of the three specific runs I mentioned above. Done. Largely because the Strange Deaths of the Batman TPB and Batman #255 both reprinted stories from many decades, I've already stories from every decade from the 1940s to 2000s (the 2000s was just an excerpt of a few pages from one issue). I want to read more that just a spare issue of two though. Not yet. Done. I read a couple issues of Alien Worlds. I also read some Ka-Zar and Shanna comics, which interpreted liberally are the jungle comics genre or mixed genre with superheroes. None of these yet. I'm not on a great trajectory, as I've bought a bunch of collected editions. My second omnibus purchase of the year should arrive this week, although I've actually finished reading the first omnibus I bought this year already. Not yet. I'm debating whether to wait until after the Assassin Nation release date to see if the price drops. I'm still waiting for the groundswell, so I can write "because you demanded it."

1st Quarter check-in. Buying Goals- Never anything specific these days. My only goal is to buy less than I read and to find a place for it all. On track. Read about 200 books so far, and I've bought less than 30 at this point. On track. I likely will do it this summer, but I don't have time for it right now. The bubble is certainly deflating, but I've got some runs I'm pretty sure I don't need anymore, and I could really use the space even more than the cash. Potential trouble spot. I've read two for school, but nothing for pleasure yet. This is always the goal I struggle most to meet each year, but I truly love reading and want to keep trying to make the time for it more. Potential trouble spot. So much I want to read again, but even more that I want to read for the first time! Complete. Read Bone and Immortal Hulk. Currently making my way through Byrne's Fantastic Four. On track. 46 read thus far. Probably 60 or so to go. And I definitely hope to have bought more long before the long box runs dry! On track. 4 out of 17 reviews written, and I'm not even on summer break yet (where I plan to do the lion's share of these). On track. 3 down.

In more detail... My Reading/Consumption Goals -To read the equivalent of 1300 comic issues (i.e. 3.5 per day down from 5/day from last year, which is more in line with reality) -To read 13,000 pages of prose (works out to 250 pp/week up from 200/week this past year. This will push me a little past what I accomplished this year) -To watch 60 movies (up from my goal of 52 last year) To watch/listen to 300 episodes (TV, streaming or podcasts) (up from 260 from last year which was 5/week). I nearly doubled the goal last year, so I am upping it, but I hope to scale back how much I consumed form this last year. On pace with comics (343 so far) and episodes (101 so far), a bit behind on prose (2287) and movies (10) but not so far I cannot catch up. I've done 2 shows and made a couple of purchases via auctions and shops and have stayed pretty well on target. Added a Toth Hot Wheels and one of the Space Usagi issues I needed, some Ducks, some Kubert, some Darwyn, a nice red dress cover and a couple of my childhood books, plus a bunch of Batstuff. Started organizing the mags but haven't gotten that far, made some progress on cataloging, and have purged 2 shortboxes and a long box of comics plus about 40 or so trades off the shelves. so making progress there. So pleased with progress so far, just need to catch up on prose and movies while keeping pace with the others. Starting 2 new D&D games with 2 new groups of people took up some of my reading/viewing time, but I am getting things back in balance. -M

Since its tradition, let's keep it going. What is on your '24 Classic Comic Resolutions? 1. Key Issue Pick-ups- Honestly, I'm not looking to buy a ton next year. I want about 4 or 5 key issues/personal grail books and that's it; meaning if I can afford them at a reasonable price. I think I'm dwindling down with collecting back issues. I'll read what I have but the stuff I want, there's not a whole lot of books I'm searching for out there. If there's something that catches my eye, I'll pick it up but there's just that handful of books. 2. Wrap Up Binding Project- I'm almost done, as I've mentioned. I have everything wrapped up and set to go. Honestly its up to bindery to take care of it. Three volumes of Ostrander's Spectre run. Waid's Impulse run, and possibly a couple other fun book ideas. 3. Self-Preservation- Still getting some of the Silver Age and some Golden Age items CGC'd . First quarter check-in. 1. Key Issue Pick-Ups: I've hit all my personal grails. I had a great February at CalComicCon and scored 2 of them from the same vendor. Then I traded some books to a friend of mine for another grail. The next comic show for me is in May but I doubt anything is going to be out there for me. It has to be a real special book for me to pick up at this juncture of my collecting days. 2. Binding Project: Sent my books off to the bindery in March. Sent my artwork to my designer. Once we hear from the bindery of the specs/dimensions, it'll be put together and I'll get them back. I'm hoping by July to have my books back. if there's a cheap run of comics I find in the dollar bin I might do. I have some random odds and ends of comics I could put together to make a bind, if I wanted to. 3. Self-Preservation: Haven't submitted any books into CGC yet. I have 2 stacks (one Silver/Golden Age & one modern) ready to go. Maybe a bit later in the year.
