The comments here are actually a mix taken from both of Stan Sakai's Facebook pages. While the images for the process are the same in both posts, Stan's comments are written up slightly different on the two pages....

This story was first serialized in 2-page installments in Diamond's Preview catalogue. I had to tell a story in 24 pages, where every other page would have to end in a cliff hanger. Each two page installment would have to recap what had gone on before and advance the plot, but not be redundant so that it would read smoothly when reprinted in a comic and in the trade paperback collections. I think it worked out fine. Part one of "The Green Persimmon" from Previews v.6, issue #9 (Sep/1996)

Although I'm loving catching up on the series I won't mind when things slow down. Usagi books are tying up the bulk of my comic budget these days. As they should!!!

OK, if we look at them by books instead of individual issues, each Saga collects 3 books. Seven Sagas X 3 books = 21 books. Add the 7 books from Fantagraphics which were collected in the Special Edition and that makes 28 books. Book 29 has already been released. Book #30 is coming out this summer, and most likely book #31 will be out next summer. Hopefully, Saga #8 will be released not too long after that. Of course, we would not want the Saga edition to be released so close to the release of Book #31 that it kills off the sales of that edition.

Seems like I read or heard somewhere that the whole concept for the creation of the Komori Ninja initially was so that Stan could do a "It's Bats, man!" pun.....

Did he ever get back to you with a price? I have not heard anything back from him, but he does seem to be pretty busy completing a number of projects before a special show coming up in the early fall which Stan Saakai will be attending. (September 17-18 Omaha, NE)
FYI...A little more detail on the September Omaha, NE stop on the Sakai 2016 tour I met a couple of these guys at Kansas City Planet Comic Con last March and they are big fans of Stan's work. They are associated with a bindery(Houchen Bindery) and do a bunch of custom bound HC editions of comic collections. Send in your comics and they will create something really sweet. Custom covers, graphics, etc...They had a custom Usagi HC at the show which was brilliant. I received this message from one of the participants yesterday... "Thanks for your note! OmahaBound Entertainment will have full details posted shortly. However here are some details to tide you over. A Prestige Event Featuring Comic Legend Stan Sakai and accompanying textbook. • Friday September 16, 2016 o Opening of Gallery Exhibit An exhibition of original art of sequential pages, cover pages, comic strips, and a high-definition display of web comics will be featured in a public event, attended by Stan Sakai, and other guests participating in the event. • Saturday September 17, 2016 o Artist and Writer Workshop Host a public workshop for writers and artists. Professional guests act as hosts and mentors, interacting with workshop attendees giving information and suggestions. Panel breakout meetings to focus on specific topics. o Stan Sakai Panel Discussion Shortly after workshop ends, a moderated panel conversation and Q&A with Stan Sakai." I left off the Musashi films because they are just one of many versions which have been filmed. A lot of directors and a lot of actors have taken a turn at the story of Musashi.
The Kinnosuke Nakamura series follows the Eiji Yoshikawa book a lot closer, much like the television series of Lone Wolf and Cub follows the manga closer than the Tomisaboro Wakayama films do.
