mrp gets my vote for a cover that hooked me hard back when it was on sale. I searched everywhere for that issue, and was ecstatic when I found it.

GCD says this is Neal Adams, but something about it makes me a little uncertain - can anyone confirm? I'm pretty sure there are at least a few House of Secrets or House of Mystery covers by Adams that I could pick instead. It is. All the Aparo issues of PS have Adams covers. This particular one doesn't seem to be particularly Adams-like-- I get a Wrightson vibe off it more than anything-- but it was a Neal cover. No quite right--Jim Aparo took over (most of) the cover art for the last part of his run as the PS artist. Jim drew the cover and interior for Phantom Stranger issues 20-24. But yeah, this is without question an Adams cover, from one of the more fascinating periods of DC's mystery comics, when the influence of gothic romances was very strong.

You wouldn't believe how hard it was for me to find a cover that met my private rule for playing this game! But I found one: Far, far, far from my favorite Neal Adams work, but it was all I could find...

My favorite team celebrates with Frank Miller and Jim Aparo.

I'm for Scott Harris this week, too. None of the many other great covers in this week's content trigger as strong an effect on me. It really recaptures the sense of magic from my earliest comic-reading days.

It's the second week in a row that the word "content" was used instead of "contest". Is there a reason why? It's obviously a tradition around here, now!

The Outsiders! I'm biased because it was Jim Aparo's way in to the attention-grabbing team book craze of the 80's, and I get a kick out of seeing his co-creations from this book showing up on TV (Arrow, The Brave & the Bold), getting their own comics (Katana), being proposed as tv series (Looker), but beyond this simple level of affection, I really dig this ensemble, with the motherly bond Katana had to Halo, the Tony-Isabella-approved Black Lightning so well-characterized, longtime fave Metamorpho (one of my favorite designs that I forgot last Classic Comics Christmas!), the hiply-uncool Geo-Force, and even the inexplicable Looker. The post-Aparo incarnations did nothing for me, but man, do I love this particular line-up!

I would never have guessed that it was an Aparo cover. It looks like a Ditko piece. Probably because Jim's cover was for a Ditko-drawn interior story. Ditko's costume design sense shines through powerfully in that character, doesn't it? This week I'm voting for Action Ace. E. E. Hibbard's Golden Age Flash work fascinates me because of his heavy use of blacks. One wouldn't think that such a dark scheme would work on a character as "light" as the Flash--and I'm not entirely certain it really does--but it gave a distinctive vibe to the comic, that's for sure.

Looking back at the CBR archives, I see my "join date" was May 2004, so that must have been right after the forums got wiped in the Great Disaster.
And I've been thinking someone here needs to revive the "Guess the Classic Cover" game. That's one of the things I've missed the most in recent years of the board. Any volunteers?
