I just read The Kree/Skrull War for the first time a couple of months ago, and was amazed by Palmer's work on that title. That starting lineup for those Avengers stories was remarkable with John Buscema, Sal Buscema, Neal Adams, and Tom Palmer of course embellishing their pencils to come up with something truly greater than the sum of it's parts. I think a young Barry Winsor Smith even came off the bench for a fill-in issue. Then Roy Thomas was of course on writing. Anyway, really loved what I've seen from Palmer. Not just in that story, but elsewhere. Tragic loss. I'm about to read the Avengers "The Gathering" saga, and I'm really excited to see Palmer's work on one of my favorite pencilers ever in Steve Epting.

So having finished the Marvel Empyre omnibus, I have to say I was pretty impressed. Even with the tie-ins that take up the majority of the omnibus (main event is just about 6 issues). Never thought I'd care about the Kree/Skrull conflict that much as I wasn't that hooked when reading the original Kree/Skrull war issues from Avengers way back when, but this newest wrinkle spearheaded by Al Ewing, Dan Slott, and in turn many other writers/artists left me pretty satisfied, and curious for more. Alas after that event Marvel goes directly into King in Black storyline. I remember that was fairly good, but I'd have to go back and read it again. Didn't read Donny Cate's Venom run from the start either, so that would probably help leave me with a better impression.

Losing Nichols is a heavy blow. Definitely an icon, especially for the black community. At least she lived a long life, and got to inspire so many through just one role on television.

Looks excellent to me. So with Namor showing up, who is the biggest Marvel character (leaving aside members of the FF who will be upcoming) that hasn't been in an MCU movie? And the X-Men probably aren't available...though we did see one of them. So of characters who are available. Wonder man? Maybe. Nova and Quasar have yet to make an on-screen appearance. I think there is a good chance that after Guardians of the Galaxy concludes, one of those two characters will continue to the cosmic angle for the MCU. I'd put my money on Nova since we already saw Xandar. Hopefully it's Richard Rider, but there's probably more than a good chance it would be Sam Alexander. Not a fan of that, but at least Nova would be around.

The MCU will have two Avengers movies in one year, getting back to the massive flagship team up film. Looks exciting to me.

The cinematography looks incredible. And I hope Angela Bassett gets more screen time. That's an A++ actress you don't want to waste.

Didn't even know the franchise was active after the last movie. Hopefully this is something decent. BTW, maybe it's not a coincidence that a new Predator comic series just released, and later this year the original 90's collection omnibus is getting printed via Marvel.

Yeah, given what thwhtguardian just posted, and as someone who likes Ivan Reis' art (I read a few Aquaman stories he illustrated a few years ago that I thought were very well done), I have to say that you didn't do him, or your argument, any favors by posting that image - it's far from his best work and doesn't showcase what he's capable of doing. I posted an inquiry more so, not an argument. Stark difference. And yeah that was a splash page by Reis, but even if the composition is different/more creative, the style would look the same. Whether Allred for instance had the most interesting panel layouts wouldn't change how his figures look or how he draws backgrounds to me.

Interesting responses. Can't say that any have changed my view unfortunately. I still think Allred's art looks like a 12 year old could do the same thing I hate to say. The Toth comparisons are interesting, but that's another one lost on me, as I really like Toth's art, and he seems way more crisp, and towards a realistic style than Allred's pop-art approach. Even with Darwyn Cooke, I feel like I can see the stack of skills that made him a great artist in his own way. Along with Bruce Timm. Those last two a bit more whimsical that I usually go for, but I can roll with it.
Someone earlier said that no one's opinion is going to change my view, but I'd counter that I've had my mind changed before in terms of what type of art appeals to me. Sometimes, it just takes a while of exposure. At the very least, it's worth it to ask others how or why certain aesthetics speak to them, even if it won't benefit the inquirer in the long run personally. I made this post to acquire knowledge, not win a competition. Obviously anyone can like what they want, but that wasn't the point of asking. Also a believer of sometimes getting out of one's comfort zone.
BTW, the first artist I spotlighted is Ivan Reis. He's worked mainly for DC on titles like Green Lantern and Aquaman written by Geoff Johns. One of the bigger names that usually seems to sell DC books.

Okay everyone. I need to know what I am missing with Mike Allred's art. It just doesn't connect with me for whatever reason. I heard CGS Tribe gushing about it on the latest previews podcast with the announcement of Superman Space Age. And I've seen his art maybe before, but...I can't understand the appeal? Maybe I'm too ingrained with the likes of someone like Neal Adams, Ivan Reis, Kerry Gammill, or John Buscema where I feel like I can see the years of mastery stacked into each panel. With Allred's art...it all just seems really rudimentary to me. But then at the same time I like some of Steve Ditko which I've heard comparisons too. But even with him I can see the discipline in certain aspects of what I'd say qualifies as great. Help me understand and potentially change my view. Because when I see something like this: I can't fathom why folks gush over something like this:

Someone did a nice review on the Neal Adams Batman Omnibus which was released 6 or 7 years back, and of course is now sold out. Wish I had taken up omnibus collecting at that time, because I surely would have picked it up. One can still get the individual volumes of course. Anyway, I've heard the complaints about the recoloring, and also Neal even redoing some panels, but at first glance I don't think that would bother me. The collected work only focuses on Neal Adams' art, so the stories aren't that connected, but it's still nice to have just for the art alone. Remarkable that at the time, it was retailed at $100. Now an omnibus that thick would be $125 at least I'm guessing. Hopefully it's reprinted soon. Now would be as good a time as any.

I had very little interest or excitement for this movie after the teaser trailer. Maybe because there was a lot of the Guardians in it, maybe because it was just too vague, but I wasn’t feeling it. After watching the full trailer last night, I am onboard with this now. Loving the scenes on Olympus, like the interaction between Valkyrie and Jane, and Christian Bale looks creepy as all get out. Seems like someone was digitally removed from the trailer in a shot with Thor teleporting away next to Korg. I'm guessing Beta Ray Bill. We'll see.

Gor the God Butcher was the main villain for the early arcs of Jason Aaron's Thor run. -M Which was an awesome read, I definitely suggest everyone pick it up if you're a Thor fan. Just got the omnibus. About to crack that open. Hopefully I can get through it before the movie's release.
