I'm kinda surprised how little Cary Nord's work was mentioned in yr review of the 1st arc. In my 50+ yrs of reading comics, this particular run is one of the finest pieces of comicbook art I've ever seen. Certainly Nord's best work. My involvement/commitment to the series directly reflected his. When he left (after his work started looking VERY rushed), so did I. That's unfair. Giorello easy matches Nord (honestly I think he's better.) Whoa! We're definitely going to have to agree to disagree! My vague memory of Giorello is of (another) Buscema wannabe. In no way is his work as memorable or as distinctive as Nord's, not even close and in no way comparable. But that's just my opinion!

The heralds of Galactus. There's the Surfer...and than there's the rest. Firelord (?) Looked like a character from the legion of substitutes. The other guy was a generic Kirby-look cosmic hulk guy. The Surfer was so unique and what followed him really wasn't!

I bought Vampirella #1(Warren b&w) off the rack back in the day. Originally, she was just a cool, sexy alternative host of the mag like they had in Creepy and Eerie. Even as a kid, although beautifully drawn, I found her solo exploits to be a colossal bore. To this day, I couldn't tell you her origin!

Ok, I'm gonna throw out a few obscure comparisons that I feel are totally valid. The Fly (Fly Man) and Yellowjacket! YJ's yellow and black uniform is just a recolored version of the Fly's green and yellow. The Fly also could grow into a giant, like YJ, but I'm pretty sure he (the Fly) was doing it 1st! Steve Ditko's original Captain Atom, 1st in his yellow uniform but later with a red & blue, heavily influenced Marvel's 2nd version of Captain Marvel. Marvel's uniform, especially his headpiece/mask and hair, looked like Atom's original but with his 2nd outfit's colors! Marvel used to fly and leave a trail of sparkles in his wake, Atom did it 1st! Howzabout Sgt. Rock vs. Sgt. Fury, or Nick Fury vs. Sarge Steel. Man-thing vs. Swamp Thing. Alfred vs. Jarvis!

I always prefer capes that flow naturally and somewhat realistically. Kirby's cape on Thor always looked so stiff but he made it work. When Byrne started drawing Superman with Thor's cape it was a huge fail for me. We can all agree the most recognizable and iconic cape is Batman's, but only a few artists truly rock his cape. Adams, Rogers, Golden, and currently, Capullo.

I own the entire Kubert Tarzan run, bought them as they came out and knew they were 'special'. It's been fun reading the reviews. Looking at the artwork posted above of Tarzan vs. the Sabertooth it's amazing how vibrant the artwork is in it's simplicity, there's so much story being told in the most minimal of styles. If there's such a thing as genius comicbook art, this is surely an example of it. The over colored, over drawn, over processed modern style comic book art often leaves me thoroughly unimpressed.

Great thread! I'm a big fan of Cary Nord's work. His work on Dark Horse's Conan book is extraordinary! Easily one of the greatest Conan artists of all time which puts him into a VERY elite group!

Superman #149, 1961. The imaginary tale; "The Death of Superman" made this 8yr old cry like a baby!
