Outside editorial fiefdoms, though, like real life, they only got together at weddings and funerals...
That's the thing, if they weren't interacting with one another, you wouldn't know they coexisted in the same planet, unlike the panel I posted. That's the basis of the shared universe.

Ditko especially; his Spider-Man didn't really work and play well with others, and Doctor Strange was kind've in a different business than most of the other Marvel superheroes. But both Kirby and Ditko were gone by the time the "universe" became a big part of Marvel besides things like guest-appearances in annuals.
Yes, the first Spider-Man annual in particular, was a shameless parade of the whole ensemble of Marvel characters of the time. Dr. Strange was quite removed from the rest, never implied otherwise, but this particular panel of Amazing #18, is for me, the first sign of a shared universe. Not sure about DC, but at Marvel we'd had guest stars, but nothing of this sort:

Bought on the 16th, shipped on the 20th, received on the 21st via Correos. 4th Monroqueta42 Comics order: This is like the only shop I know in Spain that regularly renews their stock of American floppies, not just a collector.
The first one included free of charge, as the grading was wrong. He offered another one instead but sent this one all the same too!
Some cheap Preachers won in auctions. Issues 2 & 3 have sticker damage, but at 7.26€ for both of them, that's OK. The other two were even cheaper, 6.01€ together.
Some discounted Nam issues, at 2.40€ each. Had to track the rest of the Golden run elsewhere.
More auctions with sticker damaged comics, 1.10€ each. Bought them just for the art, Waid isn't someone I follow.
Have the TPB, but at 1€ a piece, it was time to get the floppies. The rest were more expensive (mycomicshop).
Same thing, the TPB doesn't have the covers, and could get all three of them for 14.80€. The Titans one, also an auction for 3.05€. Never heard of it, nice Pérez art.
I don't like crossovers, but I like Simonson and Buscema, so at 4€ each I finally got some high grade copies.
From todocoleccion, paid on the 16th, sent on the 17th, received on the 19th via Correos:Outrageous postage for a domestic envelope of less than 500g. 7.13€ merited no feedback from me. The seller refused to say how much it would be, before formalizing the purchase. If not for what others ask for issues 7 & 13, I would've declined. Bought on the 17th, shipped on the 18th, received on the 19th via Royal Mail 1st Class (to UK address). UK eBay seller, Landaura Comics, not my first purchase with them, more like the third:Not sure I would've graded issue 4 as VF+, but they offer a good service overall. Price was tight, no sale here. Bought on the 17th, shipped on the 20th (?), received on the 28th (!) via Royal Mail 2nd Class (to UK address). UK eBay seller, not my first purchase with this guy, more like the last:Last time he sent two comics, one was the wrong volume and the other was overgraded. This time one of the three was way overgraded (was to be over VF and turned out a VG/FN if generous). In both cases he took forever to post and was full of excuses, his only solution is to offer partial refunds, but one gets tired of dealing with these sellers. Bought on the 19th, shipped on the 20th, received on the 22nd via Royal Mail 1st (?) Class (to UK address). UK eBay seller, the guy couldn't tell a tracking number from a PO ticket number, : Bought on the 21st, shipped the same day, received on the 2nd via USPS International Economy + Correos. 5th LS order to arrive (on time) out of 7 and in just 6 working days!:A better copy than the one I got from the Spanish shop.
A replacement copy for an Ultimate SM they sent me last time with some pages missing. And a not so cheap reprint of the prohibitive Preacher #1.
These set be back for about 10€ each. Ouch.
Couldn't find these ones in the UK.
The CA and the Hulk ones replace low grades copies I have. The Warren Ellis is awfully drawn, but it's still Ellis.
I paid almost as much for these ones in postage and taxes as in the comics themselves. Still, the selling price was low, so I get the whole series at less than 3€ each.
Could've gotten a better copy of the 1st reprint for a little more, but didn't realize until after paying. Damn.
Bought on the 7th, shipped on the 9th, received on the 10th via Correos. 5th Monroqueta42 Comics order:Most of these were on auction, but I only won one of them. Many buyers don't understand the point of auctions, which is why they work for sellers. I let the other guy win the biddings and bought better copies of the same comics, from the same seller, at a lower price. I just made him an offer for the lot and he accepted. The other guy must feel really proud to have locked horns and come out triumphant. Bought on the 28th, shipped on the 4th, received on the 11th via Royal Mail Tracked & Signed + Correos. Comicana (19th order):Only one week, coronation and all! Fastest delivery since Brexit. Bought on the 3rd, shipped on the 4th, received on the 15th via PostNL + Correos. House of M Comics (3rd order?):Delivery took only two working days in Spain, but a whole week to arrive from The Netherlands. Being the "biggest comic book store of Europe", I keep an eye for the FCBD offers. This year, 25% off over 300€ and free shipping. Turned out to be expensive for the service, but there aren't many choices this side of the Atlantic to buy the complete Immortal Hulk series at a reasonable price. You can find cheaper offers on eBay if you live the USA, but postage and customs will make it more expensive in the end. At 6.75€ each, it all comes down to grading: There was also a bunch of free comics, like last year, but they're more of a nuisance than anything else, really.

Kirby really wanted to be left alone and not have to keep his books in other's continuity. I always saw Ditko as more interested in the universe building business. At least when doing Spider-Man. Lee followed suit. I didn't know Kirby was dragged into it, but I'm not surprised.

I read up to 24 not long ago and, while it's nothing spectacular, I liked #18.

Web of Spider-Man was integrated with the other two titles, taking place simultaneously.
The Conan titles took place at very different times in his life.
What I meant was that Web of Spider-Man was a superfluous third Spider-Man comic. Is there a reason why we needed another Conan book or was it a cash grab? Everything is a cash grab. They could've just stayed with Conan the Barbarian and keep the narrative in a linear fashion. Instead, they started a magazine shortly after, with stories about the future (sometimes going back to before the point where CtB was at the time). They also published Giant Size issues covering his time as King, or close to it, the same way as they had already done in SSoC. Conan the King was just a way a to publish more stories every month for as long as they had the rights to the character and popularity was high.

Difficult to say, retirements are mostly silent, but many have effectively retired with the pandemic. Take Giffen, his FB says "I write stories and draw pictures while I'm waiting to die." but it also states that he's a "Former Writer/Plotter/Artist at DC". So, who's he writing/drawing for? No one I can see.

What story are you referring to? It's all in the Clone Saga TPB. First there was the clone of Gwen, the final battle with the Jackal and then Gwen2 just goes off.
That was fine.
Then later Carrion, a clone of the Jackal turns up and it's explained that Gwen wasn't really a clone but another woman who had been genetically altered by a virus to look like Gwen... oh it's ridiculous.
Did Conway take part in the 90's clone saga?
Carrion was Mantlo's creation. Only the annual with Gwen's clone retcon was Conway's doing, but that wasn't ASM, hence my confusion. BTW, the Gwen clone retcon was also retconned.

Revive? There was no clone saga before he concocted it.

Ugh. Conway. Why did they let him work at all!?! Some writers start out good and then have a steep decline that the never really recover from, I don't think Conway ever had that good start point He had his moment under the sun writing off the character he hated. That's it.

Just finished Preacher. The regular series, none of the specials or SoK mini. After watching the first season of the TV series, I always wanted to take a look, and now was the time. As with the adaptation, there are many things I like, and many I don't. Half recommendable.

Ordered the second Starman Compenendium from an online seller in the UK (World of Books) a few weeks ago and it just arrived today: Here's the kicker: it's a used/like new copy and I paid GBP 11.22 for it total, i.e., the price of the book itself and postage. So almost 1,500 pages of comics for a little less than 14 US dollars according to the current exchange rate. I'm still in a state of disbelief about this, as the book was only recently released (sometime late last year) with a cover price of $60, and the otherwise cheapest copies from sellers like Amazon are never less than about $45 - before shipping. That "packaging" reminds me of the one used by Phoenix Books. I bought a TPB from them once, never again.
