Actually, on the subject of Hank Pym, isn't he a entomologist? Why the hell is constructing indestructible robots with artificial intelligences? Wasn't he usually referred to as a "bio-chemist"? Though, honestly, the same question applies. Yeah...he was a biochemist in the earliest stories at least. All comic book scientists are polymaths.

Hey, I learned a new word today - polymaths (I looked it up in the internet) that's best word describe Hank Pym!

All scientists are experts in robotics.

Reed Richards is, of course, the polymathiest of all. I always gave him a pass on that though, figuring the cosmic rays made his mind as elastic as they did his body.

Plus, gray temples are always a visual shorthand to denote polymath status. Reed Richards, master of all scientific disciplines. Steven Strange, world class surgeon, master of the mystic arts, and kung fu enthusiast. Ra's Al Ghul, global bioterrorist, alchemist, master assassin, top-class military strategist, puffy shirt wearer.

Hey, I have gray temples! I definitely need to work on building some soft of world-conquering device tomorrow!

"Comic book scientist". Your field doesn't matter, your one o'those eggheads that can do anythin' cuz you got smarts! That always bugged the hell out of me - not just comics but lots of films as well. A "scientist" knows everything about every science ( except where an unexplainable gap in their knowledge can be used as a stupid plot point). I think there was a moderately logical chain from Pym's studies of insect communication via his Ant helmet to generalise that into cybernetics. But how he gets from there into building robots, all the other areas of biochemistry and the generic "science stuff" is a mystery.

But how he gets from there into building robots, all the other areas of biochemistry and the generic "science stuff" is a mystery. It's definitely not plausible to the degree that most fiction presents it (i.e., that you can be an expert in so many different fields), but at the same time I would say that it has some basis in reality. A lot of people with advanced degrees or in-depth knowledge in certain fields are simply smart and hardworking people who have chosen to apply that to one particular field that they were attracted to, but they could just as easily do it for another field. Or they pick up a hobby that they happen to be particularly skilled or knowledgeable in. I have many first-hand examples among my own friends and acquaintances. A college friend of mine did his undergraduate studies in applied physics but his doctorate was in biology. Another friend of mine has a PhD in mechanical engineering, but now primarily works as a software engineer. I know quite a few folks who probably could have pursued music professionally if they wanted to, but instead chose to pursue medicine, law, engineering, or some other field. And while the "dumb jock" stereotype still prevails, there are quite a few high-level athletes who are exceptionally bright and/or accomplished academically.

When I had my collection, I filed everything based on the title in the indicia. It annoyed me that Jimmy Olsen was officially tittled "Sup erman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen" and Lois Lane was officially " Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane". It just went against my instincts. I was also unsure how to handle Peter Parker-The Spectacular Spider-Man changing to plain Spectacular Spider-Man midway thru it's run. I didn't want to break up it's filing and kept changing my mind on where to place it. These OCD headaches were just another reason why I dumped the whole shebang
