Yeah, as a sixteen-year-old fan, I kinda lost my mind a little bit when I found out John Byrne would be revamping Superman.

I'm curious, what is the new look, was it a move to conform to the TV show?

I'm curious, what is the new look, was it a move to conform to the TV show? Oh, no, this was a change from the Monster/Alien/Transformation of the Month kind of story that as the staple of the Jack Schiff era. Julius Schwartz took over as editor and in came the yellow oval around the bat symbol, a slicker look to the art courtesy Carmine Infantino, a return to Batman as a detective, a new, sleeker Batmobile, etc. This preceded the TV show by about two years. Check out the issue of Detective that preceded this one and you'll see the change...

I've had it for about three years and I read it every six months or so. I think I'm about due to read it again!

Hoosier would have a different opinion regarding the Batman Schiff era if one had to live thru that period of time and it was the only version of the Caped Crusader available. It was basically written for 8 year-old sensibilities. When Julius Schwartz took over with the New Look version, it advanced to 14 year-old sophisticates
Unfortunately we did lose Ace the Bat-Hound with the transition

Like the one with Gorla, the goddess of the elephants. And the one where Batman fights the intelligent gorilla that has the bombs strapped around his torso.
But the "New Look" also has some REALLY TERRIBLE comics. Like any story with the Outsider. Bleah! The Outsider was too stupid even for the TV show! That's pretty stupid.
