well done for watching, this thread does not seem to see much action !
I have never heard of your choice though ive not heard of most modern anime to be honest, I only know the older stuff. I have not been watching since mid 00's and I mostly only watch stuff to end nineties at a push, most of my choices would be from 1970s-1991 ish. I watched Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne originally on Netflix, but it appears (don't have speakers on my work PC) that the english dubbed versions are up for view on youtube. It is one of the few "modern" anime series I really enjoyed. It's defiantly adult, with graphic violence, sex, and some other things that sharing would spoil it. I too stopped watching anime around the early 00's. And now there's so much out there, I am not sure what's worth my time. I tried two anime series episodes just this past weekend and I wasn't wowed. I don't know what it is about the early anime and the 90's anime that speaks to me, where the newer stuff doesn't.

Watched it a couple times.

I think anime is better than ever, but I agree that Mnemosyne is a great series. Watched it a couple times. I don't think it's the quality of the anime or that it's inferior to what I started out watching. But I think like comics are getting, new forms of it just don't resonate or entertain me, as a person, not so much that anime is crap now. There are probably some gems out there I am missing, but again, like comics, I've lost the desire (and time to some extent) to sift through it all to find them gems. But that is why I am reading this thread to try and check out suggestions, so I don't have to sift. I liked the first Sekirei series, that use to be on Netflix, quite well. I thought that it was still on there but it was the second series that they have on there now, Pure Engagement, and the first two episodes didn't peek my interest like the first series did. The other series I tried was the first episode of Chaos;Head. That I may just have to give it a few more episodes to decide. I also have Chobits on my netflix instant list, but I am almost certain I've watched it from the synopsis. But it is similar in description to Sekirei, so I maybe confusing the two. I also enjoyed the Ah My Goddess! anime, though I was an avid reader of the Oh My Goddess! manga from Dark Horse in the 90s.

Oh, I didn't like Sekirei at all but I did enjoy what I read of the Chobits manga. And I loved AMG back in the day. Some recent shows I've enjoyed: Psycho Pass Watamote Un-Go Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 Ghost Hound

I cant comment on the quality of the modern series at all. The reason im not into modern stuff and not inclined to get into it is same as cited above really, the huge quantity of seemingly very similar looking series and characters, and I havnt seen any with the art and animation style which attracts me. I think the older animation by hand was better than the digital computer stuff.
Watching Space Batteship Yamato at moment, just watched episode 13. This series gets better as it goes along. An epic space saga!

My basic problem with this thread is that my source of movies tends to be Netlix DVDs, but this comes with a turnaround time. I watched a movie Thursday night, returned it Friday morning, so its replacement comes Tuesday. That's 4-5 days. I don't have time to watch a movie every night, and if I did, I wouldn't always want to be beholden to what Netflix DVD I have. So at the beginning of the month, prior to knowing the theme, I had 2 non-anime films I had to watch and return before having a chance at getting anime.
On top of that, I tend not to put the anime films I added to the queue at the top of the list. More pressing to me is this issue of DVDs with long wait times. I tend to put them at the top of the queue, so they will come when available. This happened twice this month. My last 2 films (Rashomon and Robinson Crusoe on Mars) to arrive were in this category, things I'd had in my queue for months, finally available. And my next one (First Men on the Moon) is in this category as well. I returned Robinson Crusoe on Sunday. Unless one of my 2 long-wait films comes available, anime is next in the queue. Hopefully for Thursday.
And if I can watch First Men in the Moon tomorrow, another anime DVD should arrive by Saturday. Otherwise it will be at least Monday, with the end of March looming.
That puts me optimistically at 3 animes for the month with several more now in my netflix queue, which I will push behind next month's theme.
I think I need a week's leadtime for the theme.

I'd be surprised if we have many other members of this board (let alone participants in this thread) that depend upon Netflix DVDs for their viewing entertainment. Most who have Netflix are either all streaming at this point or at least getting streaming and discs. Plus there's always Youtube and some other great sites specifically for streaming anime. That being said, I have no qualms with giving a week's notice before starting the viewing window, but what's to stop someone else from viewing right away anyway?

I watched Summer Wars, and it was excellent. So thanks for the suggestion.
Too new to count for this thread, so I am still at 0 for the month.
And, given that I picked the theme, I guess I could have had a hint this time about what to expect.

I pretty much 100% rely on Netflix for my viewing. I have instant, have since it's inception. I've off and on had the DVD service too, like I do right now. But I only get one disc at a time, and the list is pretty much open for the whole family. Like right now my son and I are watching The Transporter movies together. So instant is basically it. Although as Shaxper and others have demonstrated, there's a lot on youtube that I just never knew was on there. Even with that, though, I have tried some anime shows and movies, over the last decade or so, and have really never found one that really entertained me, other than Rin, which I just mentioned above. There's a lot out there on Netflix instant alone, and they all seem to have a lot of similar synopsis and it's just not something I either have the time or desire to sift through just to find something to watch when I do get the time alone to do so. I do have a very old (in the 70's) anime movie on my instant list that I am going to try and watch this weekend. I cannot recall the title, as I have never heard of it up until seeing it. But it would be interesting to see an anime older than what I watched in the 90's and some stuff from the 80's. I'll report it here when I get to watch it.

I think I got the basic jist of this thread wrong. I reread the 1st post and we are supposed to be watching Theatrical anime films. Hm. Im unsure what was released theatrically most of anime I watch is tv and ova stuff I think.
Anyway, I watched the 1st 2 Saint Seiya movies. The first one was much better than the 2nd. They are both very very shallow films so don't watch for the storyline, but the battle action is top notch especially in the 1st film. The best way I can describe it is like watching a 16-bit video game in animated form. I mostly enjoy action oriented anime personally so for me it was a classic.
I think these were shown theatrically in Japan, although they are only 45 minutes length each so not sure.
In contrast, Ive also been watching Patlabor, the original ova series. This is the opposite of Saint Seiya in that its focused more on the characters than the giant robots. In fact im 2/3rd of the way through the series and there has been nary any robot action at all which was a bit of a let down for me personally. I know many people rate this series as a classic but im in disagreement at the moment, unless something clicks eventually.

Currently watching Nausicaa of the valley for the first time. Halfway through and not loving it. A shame since I generally love Miyazaki and post apocalyptic Sci fi fantasy

Just a Friendly Reminder...
This month's assignment ends Monday. Please make sure your tallies are up to date. If you were late to the party and do not have a post at the top of the thread listing what you've watched this month, make a final tally as a reply to this thread. That way we can see what you've watched and also pick a winner for the month.
