This is absolutely terrible news: the French satiric journal Charlie Hebdo, a strong advocate of the freedom of speech (and the freedom to make fun of stupidity and fanaticism) has just been the target of a murderous terrorist attack by islamic fanatics. Twelve people are dead, including the famous artists Cabu, Wolinski and Charb. The murderers, who used machine guns and a rocket launcher in the attack, are said top have shouted "we have avenged the prophet" while committing their heinous act. Charlie Hebdo had been a strong supporter of the right to draw any religious figure, including Muhammad, following the Muhammad cartoon controversy a few years ago. (Their take on it had actually not been insulting to the prophet, but rather to the fanatics who would murder in his name). I am simply outraged and, frankly, not a little angry right now… I've admired the work of Cabu and Wolinski for decades, and Charlie Hebdo was standing up to one of our most precious values: that of freedom of expression, without fear of being murdered for opinions and ideas. The bloody murderous morons who performed this abomination must be proud of themselves… They just gave arguments to all those who would wish a war between Islam and the rest of the world. Lord, I feel sick.

Yeah, it's terrible news. Anyone who murders anyone in the name of their God is complete and utter scum, as far as I'm concerned. It's an appalling act and a total affront to our cherished ideas of freedom of speech. *sigh* I don't know where it will all end.

Religions don't kill people, religious people kill people. I would amend that to "religious lunatics kill people". Because no actual religion would condone this type of murder. It's when religions are twisted like the Islamic Extremists today or Christians during the Crusades that atrocities like this are draped in religion. Hopefully they will all be caught and brought to face justice.

It's when religions are twisted like the Islamic Extremists today or Christians during the Crusades that atrocities like this are draped in religion. I would further precise the concept by saying "no actual religion as practiced by decent people would condone murder", because for many nutty religious leaders (and even more of their nutty followers) it is quite easy to find ground to commit atrocities in this passage or that passage of most sacred texts without having to do much twisting. "Kill the infidel" has ever been, unfortunately, a recurring theme in the history of mankind. As have "kill the traitor" when people had a different political opinion or "kill the (insert derogatory racial slur)" when facing immigration. What a sorry lot mankind can be.

It's absolutely nauseating, and it results from the kind of petty literalism that emerges from this kind of cult mentality.
It's one thing to say that observant Muslims should not in any way make a graven image of Muhammad. But why is it an insult, coming from infidels? Isn't everything that infidels do beyond the pale anyway? I don't know anything about Muslim ideas of hell, but won't all infidels end up in some equivalent to the Christian place of eternal punishment?
When some or all of the perpetrators are found, it will be interesting to see if they partake of one dominant nationality or not.

All three murderers are dead and none of the hostages were killed, so at least these abominations were kept from getting worse. But still, what a tragic and terrible waste of precious human lives.
I'm sure there will be many jihadists claiming these three assassins died as martyrs. They most certainly did not. They died as murdering morons, and all they accomplished was spread pain and hatred behind them. Not the kind of thing I'd like to have an an epitaph.
*edit*: while the police claimed there were no innocent victims, there are now unconfirmed reports of four hostages killed and four more wounded. If true, this would make a dark week even darker.

At least no more died in this tragedy. I can't manage to celebrate anyone dying, even these animals, but it's safe to say I won't shed any tears for them either. It's sad that their "martyrdom" will probably inspire more acts of insanity.

I read and re-read this thread a dozen times and I have no words to express the loss of the cartoonists that was murdered by terrorists period. It's so sad that we live in a fragile world of which lives can be lost in a heartbeat and having said that - I find it difficult to express my anger to the terrorists that snuff the lives of three innocents human being in an act so hideous it's difficult to gauge my anger towards them. I want peace so bad - but mankind finds ways to suppress it and that's makes it harder for life to go forward in harmony. Sorry about the ramblings here - and that's how I feel about it.
