Just picking out some of the names I haven't read at all, any particular recommendations for Goulart, Laumer, or Malzberg? Malzberg is a very acquired taste -- idiosyncratic as all hell with regard both to plotting & to actual writing style. I'd give, I guess, Galaxies or Herovit's World a try if I were looking into his work for the first time. Goulart's emphasis is comedy, very broadly applied. I'd start with After Things Fell Apart. As for Laumer, my favorite non-series book (i.e. not Retief, Bolo, the Imperium or Lafayette O'Leary ... others may have come up later, after I stopped keeping up with him & for that matter with sf in general) of his is probably The House in November. Others of his I remember pretty fondly are A Trace of Memory, Night of Delusions, The Long Twilight & The Infinite Cage. Thanks. What about Laumer's series like Retief or Imperium - recommended, or better stick to the stand-alone books?

Regarding cereal, I remember a few years ago trying on a whim one of my childhood favourites, Captain Crunch, but either my taste has changed over the years or they've increased the sugar content drastically, because I found it so sickeningly sweet as to be nearly inedible.

Top 5 favorite current breakfast cereals (eaten any time of the day though)
1. Special K 2. Frosted Mini-Wheats 3. Jif Peanut Butter Cereal 4. Honey Nut Cheerios 5. Cocoa Pebbles
and just because...bananas are often sliced to accompany 1, 2 and 4 in the bowl with milk, because bananas rock (despite what some hereabouts would have you believe)

I've found the same to be true of Crunch Berries, which used to be a favorite of mine. I'm not positive their more sugary, but something is different.

I've found the same to be true of Crunch Berries, which used to be a favorite of mine. I'm not positive their more sugary, but something is different. I have a hellacious sweet tooth, to the point that I've been able to sit & munch happily on cookies or candy that friends have had to beg off of after a couple of bites, & generally the phrase "so sickeningly sweet as to be nearly inedible" would just leave me puzzled ... but a couple of months ago while Starbucks was having customers vote on their favorite of 5 or so special frappucinos, I bought one & could barely stand it for that very reason. Either my taste buds are finally maturing or they really overdid it with what I recall was the Cinnamon Roll Frappuccino; the Lemon Bar Blended Creme Beverage was at least as bad. Just as well that I never tried the Cupcake, Cotton Candy & Red Velvet Cake varieties, which normally would've intrigued the hell out of me. (It occurred to me as I started typing that I might've been on the antibiotic that screwed my taste buds up immediately after surgery, but a bit of Googling showed that promotion was all but done with by the time I went into the hospital.

Favorite "trial" films: 1. A Few Good Men (1992) 2. 12 Angry Men (1957) 3. To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) 4. Anatomy of a Murder (1959)5. The Rainmaker (1997) Interesting fact, Anatomy of a Murder was filmed in my hometown! My ex-aunt's mom was a jury member in the movie.

I've found this to be true of sodas as well. After switching to either diet sodas or Crystal Lite drink mixes some years ago, I more recently tried an old favorite, Tahitian Treat (basically carbonated fruit punch). It was so ridiculously sweet that I not only couldn't finish the bottle, but it made my teeth ache.

Five Breakfast Foods That Make Cereal Obsolete For Me
1. Sausage, egg & cheese on English muffin 2. Fried eggs (liquid yoke) w/toast w/o butter 3. Pancakes topped w/cottage cheese 4. Breakfast burritos (esp egg, potato & refried beans) 5. Cream of Wheat
and pretty much in that particular order of preference

To me, Cream of Wheat is cereal.

Yeah, Cream of Wheat was one of our regulars. We ate a lot of hot porridge too, more in the winter-time.
My current breakfast staple is plain oatmeal in vanilla soymilk, to add a bit of flavour. Though lately I've started adding some vanilla-flavoured protein powder.

I no longer eat cereal. Growing up, I liked Rice Krispies and Kix. In college, I liked Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Nowadays, breakfast is Coke.
