I really don't like Ennis as a writer, so I am reluctant to check out his work on the Punisher. How come no one is voting for the series where Frank committed suicide, went to Heaven and got sent back to earth to battle demons? (That was a thing, right, and not just some kind of crazy fever dream I had?)

I really don't like Ennis as a writer, I recognize each of those words individually. But as configured they make no sense at all.

An interesting idea when the character started, but (like Wolverine) ruined by overexposure. I lost all interest in the character in the 90s. Where exactly was this overexposure? Was there a period when there were multi-Punisher titles every month?

Nothing can ever compare to the Batman machine. As for marvel, the Punisher for a few years in the 90s was super-hot in terms of sales and appearences. Not quite to the Spider-man or Wolverine level but close.Besides the monthlies and constant minis,he made guest star appearences many times in other books.I wasn't complaining because I was enjoying most of his issues. Then you also had Punisher 2099

There were also a few minis, one-shots and graphic novels. They all got cancelled in 1995 and replaced with "Punisher" by Ostrander, which got canned after 18 issues and was replaced by the dumb fallen angel thing, which burned the character out before Ennis came in with Welcome Back Frank. I don't get the overexposure thing because it was just for a few years twenty years ago.

I'm not a fan of Punisher in general. Though I don't hate him as much as Hulk, I find the characters similar in that I think they work better as story catalysts for other characters to react to than they do in their own right.
Having said that, though, Archie Meets the Punisher is an absolute classic. It's fantastic!

At his peak, Punisher was in 3 monthly titles those mentioned above), a magazine briefly, a 2099 book, usually at least 1 mini or one shot a month-(often prestige format), a bunch of OGN or reprint collections, and at least 2-3 guest appearance in other books each month at the height of his overexposure. There was also the Over the Edge Line that he, Ghost Rider (post Midnight Sons) and Daredevil were supposed to anchor (to match the Spider line, the X-line the Avengers line, the FF line etc. when Marvel was a bunch of feudal estates not a single publisher it seems) and that had a 99 cent book with rotating leads that Punisher appeared in too. In a given month it wasn't impossible to get 8-10 books that featured Punisher as the lead or a key guest star. Not even Wolverine was getting that much exposure at the time-he only had 1 title plus X-Men he regularly appeared in in the early 90s. Then suddenly Marvel realized, hey he's not actually selling well circa '95 when they cancelled them all for the aforementioned Ostrander series.

But you're right, every week The Punisher was appearing minimally in 2 or 3 books. This was the time Marvel was glutting the market with titles in an attempt to drown out the independant publishers like Malibu,Dark Horse etc who were competeing in the superhero genre.Thankfully this all backfired on Marvel.Their Heroes World Distribution Center was ill-equiped to handle the load, their massive cash outlay buying up other properties like trading card companies put them in debt and it all came crashing down when consumers stopped buying caseloads of comics as investments.Gone were all the Punisher titles and gone were about 60 others as well books as well

For a period there, it seemed like you could not pick a Marvel book that did not have Punisher and Wolverine guest-starring in it (besides the three Punisher core books, plus one-shots and minis seemingly every month). And, like Wolverine, all subtlety and nuances of characterisation were stripped away from the character, as Marvel catered for the lowest denominator. The Punisher became 'badass with big guns who kills lots of people'. And, quite frankly, dull. I've never felt any need to return to the character after this.

This mini was pretty good! Also, there's been plenty of examples of heroes going after the Punisher for what he does. Rucka's run had some of that. I think in his prior run the Sentry went after him in an issue. There was even just a 2-issue mini called teh trial of the Punisher that was damn good. Written by a lawyer actually!

Thanks, I picked up a set for a bit less than 1/2 cover I think another Punisher favourite mini would be Punisher War Zone: The Resurrection of Ma Gnucci...not to mention I got the entire set in NM for 99 cents
