If you didn't already enjoy Neal Adams work enough, Shaxper, I can't even begin to imagine how much more you'll love it from here on in knowing that you hit it off with the man personally. Any envy I might feel is lessened by the knowledge that such an event couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy than you so congratulations!
Your comments about Adams thoughts on comics reminds me of a quote from Dennis Linde who wrote Burning Love for Elvis. Elvis wasn't a big fan of the song and only sang it because he knew it would be a hit. When Linde was later asked about this he said "Elvis may not have been a fan of the song, but he sang it as if he loved it".

I think every picture of Adams I've seen he had a blue shirt exactly like that one on. Are we certain that Shaxper actually met Neal Adams? "Adams" seems to be looking a little too directly at the camera and the fellow he's shaking hands with seems to steadying what almost appears to be...
It's a cardboard cutout isn't it?

And I would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!

Thanks for sharing your story! That's a little disheartening about Neal, but I guess he has been in the business long enough for the gloss to have worn off. I would have been even more excited to meet Michael Golden and get some of his work. If I lived nearby, I'd try to join you next time!

I'm not surprised that he's not as into comics as his fans are. I bet a lot of movie stars aren't really big on watching movies.

I think Shax's explanation about Adams being part of the first generation of comics creators (who didn't grow up on the medium) makes a lot of sense. And I can see how he might not be into comics. But he's an artist, and a good one at that, so I still find some dissonance at the thought that he not only makes a living off of something he doesn't like, but excels at it. Talent aside, you still have to practice and pour a lot of effort and hours into perfecting your craft, and I don't understand how something like that happens unless you're passionate about it.

Although it's unfortunate the convention isn't going better for them, sounds like the place to be for someone interested in meeting the talent. Looks like you had an awesome time too. I think every picture of Adams I've seen he had a blue shirt exactly like that one on. Ha, I was going to say the same thing! He looked exactly the same in this picture as he did in Boston last summer when I met him.

Talent aside, you still have to practice and pour a lot of effort and hours into perfecting your craft, and I don't understand how something like that happens unless you're passionate about it. I think that you can be passionate about the process of drawing, effective storytelling, and emotional communion with the audience without caring about what you're drawing. Neal obviously cares about the challenges of his job and doing his job well.
And, honestly, this is the attitude that I prefer, and one of the reason that I feel disconnected from the last 35-or-so years of modern mainstream comics.* I have a little more respect for adult professionals doing a job than people living out a childhood fantasy 'cause they like Spider-man so much.
* That aren't written or drawn by British creators.
