There's a simple answer to the 'w' question though: it's because in the original Latin alphabet, the letter letter 'v' was used for both the 'u' and 'v' sounds (so, say, Caesar's name was rendered as Ivlivs).

The names on the cornices of the library and the town hall in my hometown (Verona) read, "VERONA MVNICIPAL BVILDING" AND VERONA PVBLIC LIBRARY." And little wise-asses like me pronounced them exactly as they were inscribed up there. |
