That's pretty funny... I guess we're not the only ones... it's a little creepy that a character he created turns him on, but it's Stan Lee, I'm sure that was just an unfortunate turn of phrase
X-Men #4
'Brotherhood of Evil Mutants'
By Lee/Kirby/Reinman
Once again, we start with a training montage...which concludes with Professor X giving his students a cake for their one year anniversary at the school. (that was quick!)
Meanwhile, we see a far more contentious meal, as the brotherhood of evil mutants (Toad, Mastermind, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksliver) are bickering while eating dinner and waiting for their leader to return. The leader, of course is Magneto, who's off stealing an old carrier.
Angel flies off said carrier, which he notes as odd, since no one is on it (Magneto was driving it with his powers). He tells Professor X, and he decides it could be trouble.
Magneto returns to his secret HQ and he and his cohorts use the carrier to invade the small country of Santo Marco, which they do easily. Professor X sees the headlines of 'mysterious carrier attacks Santo Marco' and reasons it must be evil mutants, so the X-Men (and the Professor) leap into action. First, though, he contact Magneto on the astral plain, and they have their traditional argument of peaceful co-existance vs. conquest for the 1st time 'on camera'.
After sneaking into the country, they find Magneto and company holed up in a castle, and attack it one at a time. Mastermind tricks Beast, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch defeat Angel...it's not going that well When Cyclops accidently blasts the electric generation, sending the evil mutants scurrying... he then somehow stops it from exploding by blasting it through the wall, and the X-Men (now together) persue.
Magneto decides to flee, and leaves 2 bombs behind, on small one to kill the X-Men, and a nuclear one to take out the entire country. Professor X senses the trap, and takes the hit to save Beast... they are about to come across the nuclear bomb when they see Quicksilver disarm it... he and his sister don't believe in wonton killing, though apparently they do believe in Magneto's cause, as they still leave with him, and the X-Men win by default again, albeit with Professor X dazed and confused. The End!
Rating: 3/5 .. very important historically, but kinda silly story-wise, and not in the good way.
Notes:
-- I kinda like Wanda in green on that mis-colored cover...that's need a new name, though. Quicksilver rocking the shoulder spikes I like less.
-- They continue to make try to make Jean frail, and fail. Beast and Iceman have to dodge certain death for their training. Jean opens a cake box. Yeah, the boys all failed against the brotherhood, and she almost impaled the lot of them when they re-grouped. I'm not sure why the focus on fine motor control, when we're constantly shown she already has it.
-- The whole start, with Magneto walking into an office and annoucing he was stealing the carrier, was strange. It was being sold, why not just buy it? He clearly has nearly unlimited cash, since he can maintain the brotherhood on an island fortress, and somehow obtained a nuclear bomb. Or, if he wanted to steal it, why announce? Unike Vanisher, he already has a reputation... and he clearly didn't want to mess with the X-Men.. he was freaked out when they arrives, and ran from them. Totally illogical.
-- I get that Mastermind whipped up a pretend army, and then Magneto took over, but didn't anyone notice? No one tried to resist at all? All it would take is one heroic Lieutenant or officer, or even a peasant begging for mercy, to prove them illusion. They kinda deserve to be conquered for their incompetence.
-- 'M' for Magneto, or 'M' for Mastermind? That seems like a missed oppertunity for Mags to assert his alpha dog-hood
-- It's not clear, but I think Professor X did the 'these are not the droids your looking for' trick with the border guards.... best part of the issue.
-- Why is Bobby eating ice cream every time they get called into action? He must have a really high metabolism.
-- While Mastermind and the Scarlet Witch are impressive, and Toad is clearly the Angel 'looks-cool-but-has-not-purpose' role, Quicksilver looked like a tool in this first appearance... Angel runs him face first into a wall.... really?
-- Speaking of Angel, I was thinking to myself 'why do the evil mutants even care, it's not like he can do anything to them' when he suddenly comes out with a shock stick on a long wire and drops it on them.. huh? Where the heck did that come from?
-- Magneto can apparently sense the presence of other mutants. I guess they're trying to make that a thing?
-- I noticed there's a little code on the first page, X-607. Similar codes (with lower numbers) appear on the other first pages (I went back and checked).. is that a total page count of the Marvel Superhero era? Or Kirby's pencils?
-- It's clear Stan doesn't have Magneto's origin yet... there's no way he wouldn't have killed Mastermind on the spot for this very Nazi-esque(complete with arm bands and goose stepping) army illusion, and even less that he'd have stuck with it for the real recruits.
