Morning at the Hall of Justice….
Written By: Scotty2Hotty
Black Vulcan had been on monitor duty all night and was ready to go home. She checked the roster and Sargona was scheduled to take her place. “I’m sure she’ll be late since she has to relieve me.” the young woman thought.
Just then a big puff of smoke appeared and out stepped Sargona. “I guess I should say good morning, but any day the first person I see is you, makes it a bad one.” Sargona said rolling her eyes.
“Whatever.” Black Vulcan smirked. “I hope your day was as boring as my night was.”
Before Sargona could respond, Venus came waltzing down a corridor into the meeting room. She seemed oblivious to the two other women.
“What’s with her?” Sargona demanded.
‘Oh, that was the one bit of excitement I had last night. Wonder Man and Venus must have had a hot date. They were all over each other when they came in last night.” Black Vulcan explained.
“UGH! Why did they have to come here--he has more money than he knows what to do with and could afford a hotel” Sargona said disgusted.
“You know Venus is staying here and the team has no rules about…..overnight guests.” Black Vulcan said with a coy smile as she turned to leave.
Sargona went over to Venus who was humming as she poured herself a cup of coffee.
“Late night?” the magician asked.
‘Oh….Hi Sargona, yes Wonder Man and I had the most wonderful, haha-that’s funny--date last night.” the mysterious woman said.
Just then Wonder Man approached the women. He didn’t say anything. He just gave Venus a quick kiss and left.
“So, you and Wonder Man must be quite close. Well, don’t get too comfortable honey. You’re just the flavor of the week. Do you know how many girlfriends Wonder Woman’s perfect son has?” Sargona huffed.
“As a matter of fact I do know. I happen to enjoy a healthy sex life and like having the company of men…many men. Many many men.” Venus said tossing her hair.
“Ok, ok I get the point.” Sargona offered. “I just don’t see the attraction for him. He’s so shallow and all he thinks about is himself. If I hear anything about modeling, beauty pageants, or how he’s the only male heir to the throne of Paradise Island one more time, I swear I’ll eat my headband!”
“You really don’t know your teammates do you?” Venus asked.
“How dare you--of course I do! I‘ve known Wonder Man since you were twirling your tassels in Las Vegas, cupcake!!” Sargona said angrily.
“Well, if you know so much, do you know where Wonder Man is going today?” asked Venus.
Sargona said with a sneer “Where? Getting his chest waxed?”
“Ah, no--Sargona, why don’t you follow him around today. I think you’ll be surprised at what you find,” alluded Venus.
‘”As fun as watching Mr. Prince of the Amazons shop, pose for photos, and other wastes of time sounds, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass. I have monitor duty today,” Sargona replied.
Venus smiled and said, “I’ll take your shift for you. I think you’ll see him in whole new light.”
Sargona wasn’t one who liked to be proven wrong and was very opinionated. “Ok, honey. I’ll take you up on your offer.
“Great!” Venus said. “If you hurry you’ll see what he has going on this morning. Get down to the athletic field at the university and look for the crowd”
“Well, ok….but if this is some paparazzi moment or a fashion show, I’ll turn your hair into pasta!” Sargona said, half kidding.
Sargona left the Hall of Justice and headed to the university. She noticed a large crowd and used her magic to alter her appearance so Wonder Man wouldn’t recognize her. She made her way through the crowd and realized everyone was assembled for the Special Olympics.
“Now what in the world could Wonder Man be doing here?” she thought. Just then she heard Wonder Man’s familiar voice.
“Come on! Come on--go,go,go GO!!!!” Wonder Man shouted. He was on the sidelines cheering on some kids in the 50 meter dash. As the kids made it to the finish line, Wonder Man ran down to meet them. “You all rocked! You all ran so fast you could even beat me!” Wonder Man said as he high-fived and hugged the kids. “Who needs a cold drink!?” he shouted.
All of the kids shouted “MEEE!”
“I’ll race you all there and the last one is a rotten egg!”
The kids all ran to the concession stand as Wonder Man pushed one little boy in a wheel chair.
“Give these athletes and their parents whatever they want and it’s on me” Wonder Man told the cashier, slipping her two one hundred dollar bills. “Take whatever is left out of that and tip your staff.” he said with a smile. He walked away from the concessions stand and was greeted by a middle aged lady.
“Thanks so much for coming down. You made the kids day!” she said grinning ear to ear.
“Hey, don’t mention it. I love coming down and cheering for the kids. I think I enjoy it more than they do!” he said laughing. “I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you next week. The kids are going bowling, right?”
“That’s right, see you next week.” the lady replied. With that Wonder Man took to the air currents waving good bye to the kids.
“I don’t believe it.” Sargona said to herself. “I guess he’s realized the world doesn’t revolve around him after all. I have got to see where he goes next.” Sargona spoke a tracking spell and found herself at a Naval hospital.
“Right on time” she said as she saw Wonder Man touchdown. He went in to the hospital and Sargona followed. She used a spell to turn herself invisible and watched as Wonder Man made his way to the intensive care unit. He had a bag with him.
“Wonder Man! We thought you had forgotten us!” a pretty nurse said as she ran up.
“No way Nurse Marston! I would never forget these hospital visits that my grandmother started in World War II. I only wish there wasn’t a war that needed such attention.” he said quietly. The United States was currently part of a global military force at war with Zandia.
“Your grandmother’s visits are legendary--how she would spend hours visiting wounded G.I.s. Many of them had no family and Wonder Woman visited them weekly without fail.” Nurse Marston said.
“My grandmother was a special lady. By the way I brought some potions and salves for the burn victims. I had the top scientists on Paradise Island whip them up. They should help ease the pain and give the soldiers some rest.”
Nurse Marston took his arm and said, “Thank you so much. When these guys and girls end up here, there is only so much we can do for them.”
“I’m happy to do my part. If I can get their minds off their injuries just for a little while I feel like I am honoring them and my grandmother.” he replied as the duo made their way down to the burn unit.
Sargona wasn’t ready for the sight before her eyes. Men and women burned beyond recognition, some missing limbs. “How can they be alive?” Sargona could barely look at some of the injured men and women. She couldn’t believe how Wonder Man, who was known for his vanity, could sit and talk with the wounded soldiers and not flinch. He went from bed to bed sitting and chatting.
At the end of the visit he spoke with Nurse Marston and arranged for more of the Amazon’s medical remedies to be sent. Sargona noticed that on his way out he stopped to look at a portrait of his grandmother, the World War II Wonder Woman. He crossed his arms at the wrists making sure he gave his grandmother the traditional Amazon sign of love and respect. This time when he left he summoned the invisible jet. Sargona felt that she had seen enough and realized there was more to Wonder Man than she, or the others realized. She couldn’t help but see where he went next.
Sargona still invisible, followed Wonder Man to his next stop: a flower store. “Aha! This is it!! He’s going to meet some ho-bag he has stashed away.” She followed him into an alley where he wonder-spinned into a pair of jeans and a black pinstriped shirt. He made his way to a very well kept building with beautiful gardens. A plaque in the gardens read “Andru/Esposito Hospice”.
“Is he a hospice volunteer? ” Sargona thought. “I’ve watched this much, I might as well see why he’s here.”
Wonder Man stopped to speak to a very pretty tall blonde. “That’s that woman from the old Titans--what’s her name? Melody--Melody Hall! She’s married to Hank Hall who was once Hawk.” What’s she doing here?”
Melody Hall had been a Titan years ago as Electric Girl. She had retired now and owned one of the world’s leading modeling agencies. Wonder Man, in his secret identity, often modeled for her.
“How is she?” Wonder Man asked.
“Not any better I’m sorry to say. Why do you do this to yourself? Why do you come here to see her?” Melody asked.
“You know why. I have to.” he replied.
The two chatted for a few moments. Melody kissed him on the cheek and left.
Sargona followed him and down the hall. He entered a room that had a beautiful dark-haired woman lying in a bed.
Wonder Man put the flowers he bought in a vase, sat down, and took the woman’s limp hand in his. He started to cry.
“Osiris preserve me, I don’t need to see this” Sargona said out loud, forgetting that she had followed her teammate into the room.
“Sargona?” Wonder Man said, startled to hear her voice.
“Yes, it’s me” Sargona materialized before Wonder Man’s eyes.
“What are you doing here? What’s going on!” Wonder Man demanded, obviously upset that his privacy had been violated.
‘I--I’m sorry. I was giving Venus a hard time this morning about you--she suggested I see what you were really like. I admit my image of you was totally wrong and I don’t blame you if you hate me for following you today. This is something that isn’t my business, so I am going to leave now.” Sargona stammered.
Wonder Man was taken aback as his teammate wasn’t usually at a loss for words.
“No, please stay.” he said. This is Yanina. We were models together a few years ago. She’s from Paraguay and we met on a photo shoot. We fell in love--I begged her to move to Greece with me. She did and we often modeled together. One day we were at a shoot--my mother was still active as Wonder Woman at the time and was there promoting an Amazon exhibit at a museum. Some old villains with a bone to pick heard my mother was around and decided to attack.”
“Scott, please….” Sargon whispered to the olive skinned young man.
“We were at our shoot…several miles away from the museum when my mother came crashing down from the sky. She had been punched by some no name villain that found the guantlet of Atlas. Her enemies descended on the shoot and Yanina was trapped when they leveled a mountain at my mother. I was uninjured since I’m half Amazon. Yanina was rushed to the hospital but never woke up. My mother even used the purple healing ray. It didn’t work. The morning of the incident…I had proposed to Yanina. She said yes. I decided to become Wonder Man to protect people like Yanina. People who get caught in our fights with over the top villains. My mother forbade me to become Wonder Man--if she had her way I’d never leave Paradise Island. Of course I defied her. I still come here to see Yanina once a week. Everything medically has been done for her. No one knows how she’s still alive.”
Sargona was crying now and Wonder Man walked with her out to a beautiful floral garden.
“I am so, so sorry--and to think I thought you were going on a date with some tramp tonight”
“Well, I do have a date with a friend tonight--you! Please join me for dinner--since you’ve been with me all day, we might as well end it on a good note….I would enjoy the company.” Wonder Man said smiling.
“Okay, that would be nice. And Scott, I’m sorry for thinking you were an air headed vain jerk. You’re really not. You’re a nice guy.” Sargona said with a warm smile.
“Please don’t tell anyone.” Wonder Man said with a chuckle.
