Thank you, sir. I've actually been sulking off & on for some years now over my missing by a day being born on the 39th anniversary of the Wall Street bombing. Instead, I was born on Constitution Day, which is no fun at all (though since James Madison is some distant, distant kin, I suppose it's sort of appropriate anyway). Discovering that I shared a birthday with Orlando Cepeda inspired me to adopt him as one of my faovrite players as a kid. Ditto for Bobby Wine, whose career was, uh, not quite as illustrious. And Albert Wagner is a new one on me. Neat. Hmmm, I share a birthday with the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, and being of French descent, family made a big deal of it. The only baseball player I know I shared a d-day with was a journeyman pitcher who was with the Sox when I was living in Boston by the name of John Dopson. I did root a little harder for him, but it didn't manage to move his fastball into the 90s or give it any motion and more often than not I was rooting for a reliever to pick him up and get out of the jam he created, but oh well. -M |

You & Dopson have a birthday in common with quite a large assortment of players, probably most prominently Tim Hudson & Robin Ventura, as well as quite possibly the first real reliever of note, Johnny "Grandma" Murphy. And being born on Bastille Day means you also share a birthday with Woody Guthrie. I drove over to his birthplace, Okemah, Okla., for a free Guthrie festival concert featuring Billy Bragg back on 7/14/98, & during his set Billy mentioned that the performance was being filmed by a French TV crew, who were over the moon not only because it was Bastille Day but because France had just won the World Cup. |
