Hartford Comic Con is this weekend. I may be going, though I am still not 100% sure, as I have a wedding to attend as well. The guest list isn't huge, but there are some guests I am interested in meeting and getting signatures from: Ron Marz - Thor #460, Captain America Annual #13 Tim Sale - bizarrely, the only thing I have by him is a Thieves' World graphic novel from 1985 or something Jim Cheung - Young Avengers #1, Avengers #497 Ed McGuinness - Captain America #25, Captain America #616 Shawn McManus - Fables #51, Green Arrow #51, Grimjack #29 Chrissie Zullo - Madame Xanadu #26 Jeff Shultz - Betty and Veronica #269, Archie #654 My old stomping grounds, but this Con must have started after I left CT. Is it in the Hartford Civic Center or whatever corporate sponsored name they are calling that now? -M |

It is indeed. It's called the XL Center, but the address is 1 Civic Center Plaza. They can change the name of the building, but the street name kinda gives it away. This is why Bruce Wayne doesn't have his headquarters at 1 Batcave Lane.

Stebbins Con 2014 is this Saturday, near Dayton, I will be there with Twilight Star Studios. I will also be attending Origins Game Fair down in Columbus on Thursday June 12th, sometimes go for all 4 days, just doing 1 this year. If anyone is attending, drop me a line, we can maybe meet for lunch or something.
Derby City Con is the 28th and 29th of June down in Louisville, KY. Studio has a table there, but I don't think I am going, but might drive down for Sunday-depends on finances and get up and go I have left after working on Saturday evening.

Just got back from Hartford Comic Con. I ended up with a huge pile (54) of Savage Sword of Conan issues I needed for $2 each, including #227-230, 232 and 233. Plus I got some more dollar bin Archie stuff for my collection. That pretty much tapped me out and then some. I was able to get most of the stuff from my list signed: Ron Marz - Thor #460, Captain America Annual #13 Jim Cheung - Young Avengers #1, Avengers #497 Shawn McManus - Fables #51, Green Arrow #51, Grimjack #29 Chrissie Zullo - Madame Xanadu #26 Jeff Shultz - Betty and Veronica #269, Archie #654 I also Got Captain America #616 signed by Dexter Vines, who inked one of the stories in it. Only people I missed were Ed McGuinness, who was completely AWOL, and Tim Sale, who was there but was working on commissions and wasn't signing while I was there. They said he would be signing later in the day, but I didn't feel like waiting around. Had a couple interesting dealer encounters. The guy who sold me the SSoC issues had them priced at $3 each but was happy to unload them at $2 each since the show was about to end and he didn't want to carry them home. Not the case with another guy I tried to deal with. I pulled 31 issues out of his dollar box, all stuff I know I can get for less eventually - issues of The Nam and Semper Fi. I wanted them, but a dollar each felt a little steep. So I asked the guy if he would do the 31 issues for $25, which I think is a reasonable offer. Now, if he had said no, that's fine too, no biggie - his prices are his prices, whatever. I might have bought them anyway at $1 each, not sure. Instead, he gives me this: "I've got two kids at home I'm trying to feed." I told him to forget it and I left. I mean, seriously. SERIOUSLY.  I also almost bought a comic from a dealer for $15, something I thought was very reasonably priced (I saw another dealer with the same comic for $50). Then I realized it's a local guy from my neck of the woods who is a major tool when he deals with people online, so I put it back and found somewhere else to spend my money. |

Just got home from the Long Beach Comic Expo and I'm bushed. The Hero Initiative raised a little over $1100 this weekend, selling books, prints and all sorts of goodies. I looked for some Silver Age and Bronze Age back issues, but nothing caught my eye. Just picked up some 90s back issues of Cry for Dawn and got a sketch commission done by Todd Nauck.

Home from StebbinsCon 2014 (no time machine required this time). Got some great books (See purchase thread). A couple of pics form the con... our booth manned by my wife Amy and Gary while I snapped the pic...  Some our titles....  Cygann is by Stacey Gaston (writer/artist) and I came on as editor with the third issue. Tales from the Field is our flagship anthology title, #6 is the book all the way to the left and the latest issue. Un-Naturals is a supernatural anthology book, that's issue 2 in the pic. Amy colored the covers for Tales #6, and Cygann #3 (the right hand most issue) and the cover to Unnatural #3 (not seen) due out this fall. Here's Amy trying to look happy in the very uncomfortable chairs (I wasn't sure if she was going to smile or attack me with the scissors  ). Some of her art prints are visible The Bleach print is a commission Gary did the line art on and Amy colored. The hot pink display is the magnets we made an sold featuring Amy & Gary's art.  It was a decent show, it was their 3rd con there, but the first in the spring (the other 2 had been December cons and successful so they tried doing a spring show as well, but it was not as well attended as their winter shows). Still all proceeds from admission and dealer/artist tables went to the arts fund of the high school, so it was a worthwhile cause. -M |

This weekend is the Origins Game Fair and Expo in Columbus, running from Wednesday night to Sunday. The only day Amy and I could make it was Thursday, so we went yesterday and spent the day at the show with our friends, another married couple we game with. We got there before the dealer exhibition hall opened so we could avoid lines to get our badges, and had some time to kill. We went down the comic shop in the convention center's food court, and I browsed around while I waited for the owner to show up to talk about putting some Twilight Star books in his shop since he supports other local indy creators like friend of the studio Victor Dandridge. I only got a maybe out of him a sI left a sample book and a card, but he had several boxes of $5 trades and such. I was conservative-only had a limited budget for the day, and didn't want to spend it all before the exhibition hall even opened, so I only picked up 2 things-Sub-Mariner Masterworks volume 1 in softcover for $5 and the Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction Giant Sized Special #1 for $3. I was tempted by the $35 copy of Savage Sword #1 he had, but I passed on that. That unknown worlds has a gorgeous cover by Don Newton.  Amy and our friends started at the paint and take, a miniatures painting area where you get a free mini and access to to paints and can paint the mini, so I took the time to wander around the Artist's alley, talking to various artists I knew form previous shows and meeting some new folks. I had brought my collection of blank cover variants in case I found interesting artists doing sketches within my budget. I would up spending a lot of time talking to Rick DeSchains, an industry veteran who used to pal around with some of the Image guys and do some work for Malibu. He just left a position at Universal and was getting back into freelance work. He told me a few horror stories about CCF favorite Rob Liefeld and was quite amused by my Liefeld quip I have used several times."If there is a hell for comic book artists, Rob Liefeld will spend eternity drawing kung fu comics with hands and feet in every panel." He asked if I minded if he stole that and told it to Rob's face next time he saw him,to which I replied feel free. To say there is some bad blood there is an understatement. But, Rik was a cool dude, we talked art, self-publishing, creative freedom, RPGs, etc. and he looked over some Twilight Star books too. We exchanged info, and I ended up commissioning a cover sketch from him. He was like as long as it's not something lame and obvious like Batman I'm good, so I handed him the pile of blank variants and told him to to pick one. He flipped through and was torn between The Shadow (Midnight over Moscow) and Thanos (Thanos Rising) and in the end chose Thanos. Here's Rik and I with the finished cover...  and a close up of the cover...  I wasn't expecting full color but he old me to wander off and come back in a couple hours to pick it up, so I didn't go back until the end of the day. We actually never agreed on a price when I went to pick it up I asked him how much and he was like, whatever you think it's worth...I only had $40 in cash left on me after the day at the con, so that's what I got for. Not bad, other con sketches I have had done were $30 and $35, black and white only and not double page spreads. So after Amy and our friends finished the paint and take, I left Rik to do his thing and we all wandered the exhibition hall. Amy found a new game she adored... Call of Catthulhu...  He was looking for artists for supplements and for fan art and had an art contest running, so Amy took one of the sheets and went off to do her own Cathulhu sketch, but realized she only had a blue ball point pen so did it in that...this was the result...  The game designer liked it a lot, took Amy's info and her card with her deviantart page info and wants to talk to her about doing paid work for him in the future. She also got some interest from one of the editor/writers in the "Library" i.e. writer's alley, who we have met on several occasions, so she needs to follow up on those leads in the next week or so. Wandered around some more, spent more money on cool things (Amy got some minis, I bought Amy's b-day gift while she was off drawing Cathulhu, picking up a new hand drawn Tarot deck form one of the artists that she had been admiring, so she won't get that 'til August. I only actually bought one gaming related item, I found the Star Wars Legacy supplement for the Saga version of the Star Wars RPG for $10 (normally $40 MSRP, and even Half-Price books here had it at $75 as a rare collectible, so I was quite glad to get it on the cheap as there was no way I was paying collector prices for it. We demoed a few games but nothing stood out as must gets (besides Catchulhu that is), but by the end of the day we were all beat. We left a little early to avoid rush hour traffic coming out of Columbus, grabbed dinner and went over our friends house where we played a game of Talisman in lieu of our normal Thursday rpg night. By the time I got home I was completely worn out and crashed until I had to get up for work this morning. All in all a fun day, but I must be getting old, because the thought of doing all 4-5 days of the con like I used to terrifies me and makes me want to curl up into a little whimpering ball. This was event 2 of 3 for us this week, last Saturday was Stebbins Con, yesterday was Origins, and tomorrow we have an in store appearance at Superfly Comics and Games in Yellow Springs, OH as part of the town's street fair festival, with Adam Warrock performing at the shop tomorrow evening. Again, excited but part of me knows how tired and sore I will be by the end of the day tomorrow. Luckily, Sunday is a complete day off to recover before next week starts... -M |

I've decided to hit Heroes Con in Charlotte next weekend. My first time. A few (former) CBRians there, including our one-time moderator Aaron "Sir Tim Drake", as well as Alex Cox and Joe Rice. And Lena "i_mmmchocolate" may drive down with me.
Anybody else going to be there?

The long week has come to a close...Stebbins Con last Saturday. Origins on Thursday, and Street Fair in Yellow Spring @ Superfly Comics today... Exhausted, sore, but it was a good week for comic related stuff. Some pics from today...  The craziness that is Street Fair as seen from the shop's front door around 2PM, the shop is on the secondary street for the fair, the main crowd was a block over, but there were still a fair number of people in the streets. The fair started at 9, if toy arrived after 8 AM, you had to park at least a mile away and walk into town (there were shuttle buses in the next town over) as streets were closed and parking was at a Premium. We got there early (dropped off our stuff at the shop yesterday so we didn't need to haul it today) and were set up and ready to go before 9. Superfly Comics circa 2 PM, the owner Tony is the guy in back t-shirt and glasses. Great guy, as long as you don't pop in and ask him which one is Sheldon....   Twilight Star artists at Super Fly...  We had 2 tables at the shop, Gary's table....  and Amy's...  Amy at work on a concept sketch for our upcoming coloring book...The Dangerous Alphabet: Bullies, Beasts & Beauties...  The finished sketch...a manticore....  she only got the one sketch done as the rest of the day was spent on a Loki commission...sketch approved, she needs to color it for the client yet. We did a fairly brisk trade today (Amy & I's best appearance yet in terms of sales), with both Amy and Gary getting commissions and selling prints, here's a happy couple who just got a print from Gary...  and another who picked up our Show Sampler Special (Cygann 1-3 and Tales from the Field 6 for $10 (normally $4 cover price each)  and yes that is a picture of Michael Bolton in the background...the comic shop used to be the location of an old record store and things turn up and stay as conversation pieces....but yeah it was unnerving to see his mug all day... Getting out of the town at the end of the day was worse than trying to get in, but we made, safe and sound, and with all the chaos completed tomorrow is set to be a day of rest (and maybe I will actually get some time to do some comic reading....) -M |
