I've attempted to read Marvel's Silver Age a few times now, but always got sidetracked. My best effort was about two years ago when I managed to read up to early 1966. So close. Not only do I want to finally read the whole era, I'd like to start a read and review thread, but I don't want to go over ground that's been covered recently. I know that Slam had a Marvel read and review thread, but I'm not sure if he's still doing this. If he's no longer doing it, I'd be more than willing to do one of my own if there's interest.
I've decided to focus my reading of this classic material to my off days to make it sort of like a fun project. A lot of the reason I was getting sidetracked was because of new comics, which I've decided to only read during the work week; one thing that's now apparent to me is that new comics are MUCH easier (particularly compared to newsprint) and faster to read when I'm already tired from work and exercise.
I'd be willing to start Marvel's Silver Age from the beginning, reading chronologically, or I could focus on a single series first and read through each one in an order based on which debut first. I haven't decided on what the best method would be on that point. Just wanted to post this to gauge interest.
My ultimate goal is to read all the major series to around 1983 (Pre-Secret War I) to finish out what I consider the Golden Age of Marvel comics. First things first, though. (Thanks to Marvel Unlimited, this is now a possibility. If I had to rely only on Masterworks and collected editions, I'd probably have to get a second and third job!)

I always like new review threads... just do whatever strikes your fancy.. they work far better when you're interested (and thus keeping things going). Slam, I think, was sorta doing this... though I'm not sure if he was reading everything, or just the titles he wanted. As you probably know, CrazyoldHermit is doing Spidey, and I'm doing X-Men, I think it's fine to have overlap, though, really

I'll be reading Spidey and X-Men of course, but I might leave those out of my reviews so not to overlap too much. I think that would be a good plan. If someone else starts a review thread focused on a single series after I start, I can just drop said series in my reviews and point to and mention the new thread.

I've wanted to do this too, but I demand affordable collections of Mille the Model and Rawhide Kid (and the other "girl" comics and Westerns) before I start. My OCD wouldn't let me leave anything out.

Never hurts to have multiple viewpoints on the same series anyway, so I don't see any problem if two or more review threads overlap. I like reading them - especially when they review things I'm never likely to read myself. The ones covering series I do plan to read for the first time or re-read after a long time I usually avoid or just skim through, with a view to coming to them fresh whenever I get around to them myself. But if it's something I remember pretty well, like MoKF, I'll likely follow the reviews.

I really enjoy reading Slam's thread whenever it's updated, but as berk says, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't have a second review thread on the subject. I mean, it's not like you'd both be reviewing the same series, it's a multitude of different series and therefore there'd be a lot of room for opposed viewpoints or different opinions on a certain comic. That would be interesting, I think.

My OCD wouldn't let me leave anything out. Has Marvel ever produced an affordable collection of those five wonderful issues of Strange Worlds that Atlas/Marvel published in, I think, 1958 to 1959? I used to have mid-grade copies of those and they were amazing! The first issue is often cited as the first Lee/Kirby collaboration.

I say go for it. Life, the universe and everything means I don't update my thread very often. And I have no problems with multiple viewpoints.
I read a grand total of 1/2 of a comic last month.

Well, it looks like I'm good to go then. I'll only be focusing on the superhero stuff, of course, so to all the Millie the Model and Kid Colt fans...I'm sorry.
I'm going to get a lot reading done on my first off day, Friday, so that's when I'm planning to start.

Just don't say so long and thanks for all the fish to your own thread Slam, it's too good a read, even if it only gets updated infrequently. -M

At least I've never read 'em, and I have a big 'ol pile of reprints. Sadly, Marvel seems to be less and less interested in reprinting non-superhero and pre-bronze age material. Which means I'll be buying fewer reprints - the back issue market seems to be more and more driven by dabblers brought in from tv and less and less by people who care about actual artists and writers.
I keep hoping they give the rights to the pre-1960 material to IDW or someone with a historic interest in preserving and expanding the market for old comics, but I suspect they'll just keep sitting on and doing nothing with the material.
Still, I'm glad for the last couple years and my copies of Atlas Era Battlefield, Menace, and Black Knight Yellow Claw. Although it saddens me I'll never get the earliest material from Kirby's return, Denny 'O Neil and Steve Englehart's first scripts, and a bunch of Larry Leiber material that's actually good, just because it's not in the superhero genre.

A lot of the stories from Strange Worlds are reprinted in Strange Tales Annual #2. (Which, I must admit, is also a very expensive vintage comic. To make matters worse, the new material - an early Human Torch/Spider-Man team-up - is terrible.)

How expensive are those 60's reprints of classic Golden Age material? Fantasy Masterpieces, etc.? Some of the non-superhero stuff that Marvel was doing in the 60's was so shamefully derivative that it's hilarious. Goodman really was a piece of work. Homer the Happy Ghost springs to mind. Not to mention how they eventually morphed their romance/girl comics into blatant rip-off's of Archie.
I'll be relying on Marvel Unlimited for most of my reading. My Masterworks collection is far from complete and I've only just begun collecting the Epic line. I think Epic is a fantastically produce line, but I don't care for the randomness of the release schedule. I've only bought Vol.1's so far.

Checking out Marvel's Unlimited library, there are still some puzzling omissions. They have the bulk of the Incredible Hulk's first series (maybe all of it past this point from what I can tell) but for some reason they still don't have issues #102-110 in the library yet. This has been reprinted in Masterwork's volumes, so I'm sure they have the files, so I'm not sure why they'd omit the re-start of the Hulk's own series. Luckily, I bought most of those Marvel DVD ROM's so I'll be able to fill in whatever gap's I find for the Hulk, Spider-Man, FF, Avengers and X-Men.

I was toying with getting it to make it a little easier on hunting for review thread stuff, but I didn't want to give them money then find out they don't actually have what I want
