Slight dilemma here - let's say you come across 2 copies of a (Marvel) book you really want and have these choices:- - a grade 9.4 NM copy; or
- a grade 8.0 VF copy signed by Stan Lee (with proof he signed it)
Which one would you choose?

If it was a comic from the 60s or older I'd go for the 9.4.That grade is very hard to find.Its a no-brainer Personally a signature means nothing to me unless I was there when it happened. |

Depends on the book, but I would probably go with the 9.4. Partially because of what Ish said, but also because there has probably been nobody in comics history who has signed as many comics as Stan Lee. While there is some premium attached to his signature because he is such a legend, it is not difficult to find comics signed by him. The running joke on the CGC forums is that eventually comics without Stan's signature are going to fetch a premium because they will be so rare.
Of course, I have books signed by Stan as well, so that affects my feelings. I do think owning a signed Stan book is something most Marvel collectors should get, and if you don't have one and don't think you will ever have a chance to meet him in person, picking one up is not a bad idea either.

Living in the norther region of Ontario, Canada I unfortunately have not had an opportunity to meet many/any legends, let alone Stan the Man. Which is why I would consider that signed book.
That being said, 9.4 is rare, especially if it is an older book so I would probably go for it. Like mentioned above, it would be nice to be there personally if Stan were to sign a comic. The only signed books I bought were somewhat by accident. I have a nice high grade ASM #239 signed by JRJ and a copy of #97 by Gil Kane. The Kane one is special for me because it was advertised as having writing in the inside. My joy was when I learned it was his name and doubly so when it was his signature. Since he is no longer around, I am very happy to have it.

Considering what Stan charges for autographs these days, as well as the simple fact that he won't be around much longer, the signature seems like a smarter investment.

It's amazing how much Stan charges for autographs compared to many of the creators from roughly the same period or right after he left comics. Here is a rundown for prices for autographs from creators I've met: Chris Claremont- $1 per book Neal Adams- 1st book is free, $5 for 3 books, $20 for more than three books Jim Steranko- free Roy Thomas- free unless you want to donate money to charities Pat Broderick- free Josef Rubinstein- free They were all awesome people too and would let you just sit at their tables for as long as you like to talk about there work if there wasn't line. I spent a good 20 minutes talking to Pat Broderick about his Green Lantern work and H.E.A.T |

Neal's prices seem to vary depending on the size of the venue. Which makes sense, as higher prices for a bigger crowd will help keep him from being overwhelmed with people. But when I was at Boston last year it was $20 per signature, none free. That's the highest I have seen outside of Stan though for a comic book creator. TV and movie celebrities at these things, on the other hand...

The book I was thinking about is a high-value bronze age issue whose NM value sometimes tips the scale at one grand.
On comicspriceguide, a VF at 8.0 is listed at 50% of the NM value. Many dealers sell VFs for as much as 75%-80% of NM.
So, I was wondering if the premium associated with a Stan autograph under the CGC signature series would replace some or all of the value that's lost by the VF grade.
Of course, a NM copy that's also autographed by Stan goes north of three grand....
On retrospection...I think it's better to get a NM copy...
