i have a tiny bit of nostalgia for baseball because first when we had a tv, I remember seeing baseball on it sometimes - we only had 2 channels back then in the late 60s & early-mid 70s, but there was very little Canadian programming apart from the news and current affairs shows and Hockey Night in Canada, so the rest of the airtime was filled up with British and American shows. Actually, it isn't much different now, come to think of it. Johnny Bench and the Cincinnati Reds were the big team in baseball in the early 70s, as far as I can remember. Mid-'70s, actually, succeeding the Oakland A's, who won the World Series in '72, '73 & '74 & in turn succeeded the Baltimore Orioles (who were also in three straight series, though they lost in '69 & '71) as the preeminent team. Which was then followed by The NY Yankees who went to 4 World Series between 1976 to 1981 and winning 2 of them in 1977 and 1978.

What really gets me about the Suarez biting incident isn't so much Suarez himself, as he's done this twice before and long ago proved he's a complete wanker. It's the ridiculous defense of Suarez by the Uruguay coach, media and fans. Somehow they're trying to blame the European media for blowing things out of proportion.
Out of proportion?! The dude frikking bit a guy. Bit him! During a World Cup elimination match. Directly or indirectly leading to Italy conceding a goal one minute later, causing them go get knocked out. How much bigger a proportion could you have, exactly? How can anybody possibly try and defend Suarez on any grounds?
Complete, total loss of respect for Uruguay, both on and off the pitch. Ridiculous.

Back then baseball had four divisions so I rooted for one team in each division: Cubs, Reds, Red Sox and Royals. I've seen three out of the four win a World Series, one to go.

Indeed. The way the Cubs are going, any 9 of us here could take the field & give them a good game.
Well, I exaggerate. We'd probably need to add another 4 or 5 guys for bench & bullpen purposes.

If the Cubs ever do win the title there will come a bandwagon that will dwarf all others. There will be aliens landing UFOs in Grant Park claiming to be Cubs fans from way back.

Tim Lincecum throws his second career no hitter, both against the Padres. Congrats to The Freak and the Giants. -M

Many Americans, who only learned about soccer this week, are confused that the US team lost, yet still went on to the next round.
If you get stuck with an American of this type, DO NOT ENGAGE! They think their anti-soccer commentary is very clever. (And if all they are interested in is being amusing to people who like Duck Dynasty and Rush Limbaugh, then they have succeeded ... for what that's worth.) It can get very tedious very quickly and you might lose your hope for humanity.
But that type of American seems to be shrinking a bit, and a lot of Americans are excited about US chances in the World Cup.
USA! USA!
