This is pretty stupid:
MSN's website is reporting that Rihanna was rooting for Germany over the US in the World Cup game yesterday. It's one of their top stories. (In their defense, the story is in the Entertainment section.)
I don't really get how this is news. There were a couple of important Supreme Court decisions yesterday. Are they old news already? Geez Louise.

And yet, in the spirit of "I don't care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right," you're (quite justifiably) posting about it, & I'm sure you're not the only one. That's a win for MSN, I guess, though not for journalistic sensibilities.

I find it comforting that I'll have so much company in the Realm of the Damned. Hopefully it will be ruled by one of those Weird Random Dudes, like those guys from 1960s Doctor Strange comics. Like Zom or Nebulos.
With my luck, it will be one of those scary guys from Dr. Fate or the Spectre, like Oom or Wotan or Kulak.
Or Zor! He doesn't look like he'd be much fun.

Ann Coulter is clearly the biggest imbecile in the west. What does she weigh, 75 pounds when wet? What a thoroughbred idiot. Put her on Springer.

If I may paraphrase you, Jez: "I'm not sure why everyone is shitting on Anne Coulter. She makes more money in one day than many of us will make in one lifetime." Care for a petard with which to hoist yourself?

Here's my strange sports story for today.
Bill Russell was one of the most successful basketball players ever, winning the NBA championship with the Boston Celtics eleven times. Russell went to high school in San Francisco in the early 50s, and one of his teammates on the basketball team was future baseball slugger Frank Robinson. But before Bill focused completely on basketball, he also competed in track & field, and was one of the two best high jumpers in the city. His rival, from another high school, was not as tall but was a great all-around athlete and was headed for the Olympic track team in 1956. But he got another offer, and took that path instead. He flew to New York to record his first album.
His name was Johnny Mathis.
Yes, that Johnny Mathis - "Chances Are", "It's Not For Me To Say", etc.
He's still performing, at age 78.
Blew my mind when I read that he was a world-class athlete before he started singing.

Brazil squeak through on penalties (most nerve-wrenching....). But they're still not convincing me they're going to win the gold...
Uruguay-Colombia next....

We all know how I feel about the Yankees...but has anyone ever won Rookie of the Year, Cy Young and MVP in the same season...right now Tanaka is a candidate for all 3 (and I am dubious of starting pitchers winning MVP but it can happen-ask Verlander). Granted it's only half a season, but man, he's outclassing a lot of guys right now and almost single-handedly keeping the Yankees relevant.

Without doing any kind of intensive research, I see that Fernando Valenzuela was the first pitcher to win the RoY & Cy Young the same year, at least in the NL, back in '81. He was 5th in the MVP balloting.

As far as the A.L. goes, Vida Blue (1973) and Denny McLaine (1968) won both the Cy Young and MVP awards.Ron Guidry came close in 1978 finishing in 2nd place in the MVP 60 points behind Jim Rice.
In the N.L. Bob Gibson (1968), Sandy Koufax (1963) and Don Newcombe (1956) won both
