I've never watched Hagler-Leonard. It was PPV at the time, so I didn't see it live, and I was disappointed that Hagler lost, so that discouraged me from seeing it afterwards, plus the fact that it didn't sound like an entertaining fight. But I should probably give it a look after all these years.

I was in college when it happened and had a group of friends who were all in to boxing so we got the fight, but that was about the last era that I watched boxing because of the move to PPV. I think it's worth a watch. It's not an all-time classic, but it's at least interesting to watch to see if you agree with the decision. And at this point it's only a 45 minute time commitment. It's a decent fight.

It's a decent fight. Yeah, I'm sure I'll watch it at some point. Not sure I'll try to score along with it - I'm probably not objective enough to do it properly. I lie both guys, as well as the other two of the Big 4, Hearns and Duran, but I didn't like Leonard as much in the comeback phase of his career as I did earlier on. Not to take anything away from his achievements - it would have been quite an accomplishment to come back and just compete with Hagler in a close fight, and everyone agrees he did at least that much, controversial decision or not.
It's so great we can watch all these classic fights on youtube now. It's something I hope I never take for granted. I remember in the early 90s having to spend beaucoup de bucks buying videotapes of Julio Cesar Chavez's early fights, Chavez being my favourite fighter at the time. They didn't always have very good picture quality but I was happy to be able to watch them in any form. Now I can can see almost all of them and much more besides on youtube.

The Red Sox have debuted new uniforms that they will feature on Patriot's Day, which is also the day of the Boston Marathon. It is part of the City Connect line which MLB is doing in partnership with Nike coming out of their 2019 deal with Nike for uniforms. The color scheme is definitely NOT traditional Red Sox colors, and the sleeves will feature a marathon like number patch with 617 (the Boston area code) to honor the marathon and the Boston Strong reaction, which is cool, but man I don't know about these uniforms... -M

I was thinking it might be Lakers' yellow for new part-owner LeBron.

I've now watched Ali-Liston II four times (it doesn't take long) and I can't for the life of me figure out the controversy. Ali hits Liston with a solid right, right on the chin while Liston was coming forward. I guess you can argue about whether it should have put Liston down for the count, but there's no "phantom punch" there.
This has been my occasional classic boxing post.

Re: These abominable Patriots Day uniforms for the Sox What Slam_Bradley bleeahed. Another reason to hate Nike. Says a Mike rep who obviously has a deep and abiding knowledge of baseball and Boston: “Really looking at the color scheme of yellow and blue that signifies what that looks and feels like and lifting up Boston across the chest.” The fluck does that mean? Will someone be setting up the tee for the batters, or will a parent-coach be pitching? They should continue to use the classy home uniforms with "Boston" (as opposed to "Red Sox") on the front, as they have for the past few years on Patriots Day. Ridiculous.

And, yes, Nike, I realize that these are the Marathon colors, but wouldn't a sharp-looking yellow and blue patch have done the trick?

That 'sky blue' with yellow looks like some misguided attempt at Sweden's World Cup soccer shirts.

It is Willie Mays' 90th birthday. So happy 90th to the Say Hey Kid.
Which got me wondering how many Negro League players were still alive (Mays played for the Birminham Black Barons). The internet tells me it's around 130...which isn't very darn many.

Impossible to play the "Best Player Ever" game. Too many variables. BUT... no better baseball player has ever walked this Earth. God, he was so good. Mays’ final hit drove in the go-ahead run for the Mets in the 12th inning of Game 2 of the '73 World Series.

When I was a kid, Mays was the one we thought would break Babe Ruth's home run record. At the end of the 1965 season, Mays had 505 home runs and Hank Aaron had 398. But Willie's body had been thru a lot and his production declined. Aaron didn't catch up until the 1972 season.
