I'm at work here in Columbus with a bunch of Indians fans, and they are all complaining about the Guardians name (they also preferred the Spiders), it's definitely the talk of the day. I call foul on the supposed research (pun intended!). The polls were sent to all the season ticket holders and were up on the team website for months for folks to voice their opinion. If people did not participate for whatever reason (and I am not an Indians fan nor follow anything Indians but I saw the link and headline for it for months on the Red Sox official MLB page and a couple of times on the ESPN MLB page, so they did put the word out there), then they lost their opportunity for their opinion to count and crying foul after the decision was made is, as far as I am concerned sour grapes. I neither like it not dislike it (though its far better than the other new pro team name revealed this week...The Kraken, blerch!) but I chose not to voice my opinion when it would have mattered, so it is what it is. -M Yeah, my statistical sample is the "office pool" today, so maybe we're just a cranky non-participatory lot!

This reminds me of when they stood the NHL team up here back in 2000. There was actually a legit push for the "Mad Cows" which was the nickname for the old AHL affiliate the Columbus Chill (in fact, there was a "cow" alternate jersey sometimes worn to celebrate this). It spoke to a bit of a civic pride that it may be "cowtown" here, but why not have some fun with it. In fairness, Mad Cows was too out there to really get adopted. But then they went with "Blue Jackets" with some far-fetched claim it tied into Civil War history of making Union uniforms. So much for the customer "research" back then, the name resonated with pretty much nobody. and yet I have family on my wife's side that are Blue Jacket season ticket holders, who love the name, and proudly claim it's the best name for a team in the NHL (and best for any team anywhere that's not the Buckeyes) and the best match for a team based out of Columbus, so yeah, there's always those who hate things who can't understand how anyone could like it, and those who love things and can't understand how anyone could dislike it for any reason. It's the way of the world. -M Good counter perspective! Respect for your family on that...teams names and whatnot are a great debate, but at the end of the day you love what you love!

On the new name of the Cleveland team, I just glanced at the comments section of news site on that topic earlier today, and one of them suggested the "Flaming Rivers" as an alternative. What a missed opportunity...

Spiders would have been better, though it does evoke some less thatn glorious Cleveland history.

That’s a much better logo, too.

I'll try to put this boxing news in spoilers in case anyone here hasn't seen the fight and plans to watch it later but, {Spoiler: Click to show}I just watched the Anthony Joshua - Oleksandr Usyk Heavyweight Championship fight. I like both guys and would have been both sorry and glad whoever had won or lost, but as a demonstration of technique and skill this is something any boxing fan will want to see.

First pitch of the AL Wildcard game is in a few minutes. Sox-Yanks. Go Sox!

Yankees showing one again, they are paper tigers. They were the prohibitive favorites for the AL crown in the pre-season, and the favorite in this game, and for the most part, aside form one or two short stretches, never even showed up.
I don't like the Sox chances against the Rays, but I'll be rooting for them the entire way.

(Well, except for Vedugo getting thrown out at second. There are downsides to his youthful enthusiasm.) Cora showed last night exactly why the person in charge of a baseball team is called a manager. The Rays are damn good, but my guess is that the Sox do not go down easily. PS: The JD Martinez ankle injury was the best contribution he could have made to the team.

A Sox win, 2 close losses, and one blowout loss where a Sox starter can't get out of the third and the bullpen pours gas on the fire. SO channeling Karnak... Game 1 solid start by Sale wasted when bullpen gives up the lead and Sox bats mostly silent after an early rally. Game 2 Sox win a nailbiter. Game 3 Rays win in a laugher. Game 4 Rays get early lead, Sox mount a comeback but fall just short, series goes to Rays. But my prognostication abilities are suspect! -M

But my prognostication abilities are suspect! -M No, your predictive powers are ceratinly better than Karnac's! However, I'm not so sanguine about Sale's chances of even five solid innings, I'm afraid. I think any game the Sox win will be a nail-biter. Rays' pitching is just so deep, it's difficult to see Sox bullpen hanging with them pitcher for pitcher. ERod is always an enigma; Sale still isn't really himself and loses both velocity and control in a heartbeat; Pivetta's a bulldog, but can pitch just well enough to lose sometimes, especially when the bats face good pitching against him. Still, hope springs eternal, and if they can sneak away with one win in Tampa... No matter what, the winter will be warmer knowing that Yankees can't beat Sox when it counts, and that there'll be yet another massive overhaul replete with overspending and firings galore (though maybe I should hope they re-sign Boone, who is like a secret weapon for the Sox). Ahhhh, Schadenfreude...

Ahhhh, Schadenfreude... Whatever happens now, it's still a good season, especially when just about everyone wrote off the Sox as an also ran this season who at best would be a .500 team. I had one interaction with another alleged Sox fan on another site, whose stance was this season was a disappointment if the Sox didn't win it all because they had such a big lead in the division early and that the front office blew it at the trade deadline because they didn't trade every prospect they had to win it all this year, so he was giving up on them to root for the Padres, a team that knows how to build a winner. I laughed at him then and I am laughing even harder now. Bandwagon fans who chase frontrunners are not fans of a team. It's even funnier watching him try to crawl back on the Sox bandwagon now, even though he loudly proclaimed the Sox didn't have a chance in hell against the Yankees last night. I've largely absented myself from Sox talk this year because too many modern sports fans are built just like this guy and really leave a foul taste in my mouth as I try to root for my teams. I think maybe some Sox fans have been spoiled and either have forgotten or are too young to remember the lean years of the Curse Era and do not know how to stick with a team through thick and thin. But that's just an old man kvetching. -M
