In discussing struggles of Sox prospects a few posts back we mentioned Michael Chavis, and someone commented he was doing better than some of the others mentioned. Well, he just got DFA'd by the lowly Pirates today whose roster is extremely thin. Hopefully he can catch on somewhere else in the offseason, but it will most likely have to be on a minor league deal. -M And as bad as he was, Chavis was better than Dalbec and Franchy. Yikes. From Alex Speier: "The Red Sox are a putrid 20-45 within the division — the worst mark in franchise history — but 19 of those losses are by one run, with the Sox having led in the sixth inning or later in 11." Where were Bloom and his stat guys as this became more and more apparent? As well as the lack of real pop in the line-up. Great being a whiz at the numbers, but only if you use them to build a decent team. Which means that as awful as the Sox were, their record outside the division was around .597. Nice league ya got there, AL!

Great being a whiz at the numbers, but only if you use them to build a decent team. Which means that as awful as the Sox were, their record outside the division was around .597. Nice league ya got there, AL! Chavis never showed the actual power results Dalbec did at the MLB level. I still think Dalbec suffers from being over-hyped and forced to learn a new position as he transitioned to the majors because he was blocked at his natural position by Devers. Just as the Sox think everyone can play OF, they also believe everyone can play 1B and a lot of folks don't realize how hard it is to learn 1B, especially when you are used to being on the other side of the diamond. Mistakes were made in his development, and I think he could benefit from a change of scenery and different coaching voices and could still be a legitimate .240-.250 25-30 HR guy somewhere other than Boston. Franchy was a prospect with his potential destroyed by another organization (that organization's Dalbec in a sense) the Sox thought they could successfully salvage but the organization has a real issue with successfully transitioning everyday players from the minors to the majors who aren't already HoF-caliber potential players who rise of their own accord despite what the organization does and not because of it (your Xanders and Devers of the world). The Sox need to revamp their roster this offseason to be competitive in that deadly AL East, but long term they need to address the issues in their farm system development of players or they are going to have to resort to big money free agent signings continuously to stay competitive, and that's a losing proposition in the long term as every competitive season nets you 2-3 where you are fielding older and overpaid players whose contacts are albatross hanging on the team's neck. -M

If ever a player needed a change of scenery, it's Dalbec. He's no kid, but with a good hitting coach, maybe he can be a good player elsewhere.
Bloom may be getting his last chance this off-season and 2023; if he were going to try for a top-notch free agent (not that there are too many this year) and he doesn't sign Bogaerts and/or lock up Devers, who'd want to come here?

If he falls short it will impact the owners bottom line in a big way. -M

And with loss 81 tonight, the Sox guarantee they won't have a winning season this year.

Tristan Casas is currently hitting .151 in the majors and only has 8 hits since he was called up at the beginning of the month. Five of those, however, have been home runs, including a handful to the opposite field. He's also walked 13 times in 66 plate appearances, so his OBP is .313 despite only hitting .151.
He also plays a smooth 1B defensively. I am intrigued enough that I want to see him play 1B/DH on a regular basis next season (perhaps with Hosmer playing opposite DH/1B as he is a gold glove defender and we don't have a regular DH on the roster for next season (please Baseball gods don't let then resign JD).

And in his next plate appearance Casas adds another walk.
More on Casas-he seems to be heating up a bit after his slow start and adjustment to MLB pitching...
Triston Casas’s last 20 plate appearances (he has 67 currently total):
.385 AVG .600 OBP 1.077 SLG
5-for-13, 3 HR 7 BB, 4 SO
He is the 11th Red Sox player ever with at least 5 HR in their first 20 MLB games.
I think he's starting to adjust.

Orioles have 9 HR and 3 triples in 13 innings so far this series against Boston.
Anthony Santander has 4 of those HR.

However, do you know the first player in the modern era to smack five HRs within his first ten career games? Pause for cogitation... One Bobby Dalbec in 2020.

However, do you know the first player in the modern era to smack five HRs within his first ten career games? Pause for cogitation... One Bobby Dalbec in 2020. True, but Dalbec never had Casas pitch recognition skills or comfort playing defense. Still, I am intrigued by Casas, not sold. Dalbec, like JBJ was a streak hitter but never had consistency ever. And his hot streaks never lasted long. He is a mistake hitter who gets beat by good pitches every time. Casas looks to have a better approach and some ability to deal with or lay off pitcher's pitches, and not flail away like Bobby D. But it's still early to make a call as boom or bust of Casas, but he is intriguing at the MLB in a way no prospect has been in a while. Most Sox prospects are intriguing at AAA but look godawful at the next level. Casas started godawful, but unlike other Sox prospects, he looks to be making adjustments. That's what is intriguing about him. -M

I'm sure it was more a move like Boston just did with Sawamura and a couple others.. just trying other people since they know they won't re-sign him. While he's not setting the league on fire, he's had a fair season....229 with 14 HR 49 RBIs with a .654 OPS(like I said earlier, a bit better than the Dalbec/Cordero combo). I think he's get a minor league deal somewhere thin at 1st and have a chance to make an opening day roster. Chavis was thought to have big power coming up as well.. and he did his rookie year... pitchers just figured him out and he didn't adjust well. I agree 100% on Dalbec.. I hope that he can get traded and go somewhere he has a chance... it's not in Boston now with Hosmer AND Casas. I think you mostly let Casas play 1st next year, and Hosmer is the DH. I know Hosmer is a good defender, but Casas is young and you need to see what you have. Too bad they are both Lefties... seems like an ideal platoon. Or maybe the awesome contract that have Hosmer at will make a tempting trade. The problem there is is CAsas doesn't work out, then you're back where you are now... though I think he's got a better chance. Guys that know the zone generally figure it out. Also agree 100% on JD... I wish him well in his future endeavors.. elsewhere.

Those are not the first HRs against Boston this year.. he hit one at the 15-10 game in Baltimore I was at, and I remember a walk off earlier in the year. Gonna check the stats: Santader against Boston this year (in 17 games) .318 7 hr 23 RBIs ... OPS 1.073 Not bad

In all fairness, the Pirates were a mess by design this year. They had no chance of competing, so they rostered a bunch of DFA-able players to fill out the lineup while giving their actual prospects time to work on things at the MLB level with little to no pressure or expectations. Mitch Keller, who was their number one pitching prospect, was a disaster the past couple of years but finally looks as though he’s figured it out. Oneil Cruz started slow (big-time pitch recognition issues, leading to tons of Ks), but he’s raised his BA by 19 points in the past week even though he’s over 300 PA for the season; he’s going to be special. They brought up Ji-Hwan Bae last week (former Braves prospect who the Pirates got a few years ago when the Braves got pinched for cheating) and he has provided some spark in the lineup with his speed and OBP abilities. Chavis was fine for what he was, but he wasn’t coming back next year, so dumping him now is a little odd but not totally out of the blue.

Prince HalLeading off for the Red Sox in Toronto tonight...CF Jarren Duran. He was part of the taxi squad the team brought to fill in for those unvaccinated players who couldn't go to Toronto today (the vaccine mandate expires tomorrow, so today is the last day it's an issue. The Sox only had one unvaccinated player this time around-Ort, who closed last night's game. Duran replaced him on the roster for the day. -M PS to add: to his credit, this means Duran got vaxxed as he said he would after last time.
