What does kneeling in game mean to stop the clock in football? Is it a bad thing to do? The QB takes a knee to run out the clock at the end of a game, usually when his team is ahead, though it can happen when the teams are tied and it's best to wait for overtime. If say, the Avengers are ahead and they have the ball with 1:40 left, they can save themselves and the other team injury, protect the ball and use up time by having the QB kneel instead of running a play. Even if the JLA has their three time-outs, the Avengers can usually run out the clock doing this.

Man, I really hate watching anything on the Foxsports channel and that seems to be where all the world cup games are shunted to.

Man, I really hate watching anything on the Foxsports channel and that seems to be where all the world cup games are shunted to. I watched the US/Wales match yesterday on Peacock, with the entire thing being broadcast in Spanish. The only thing I understood were the players’ names and the GOOOOOOOOOAL call when Gareth Bale slammed home the PK to knot the match at 1-1.

Prince Hal Did you see the Sox lost bench coach Will Venable who leaves the organization to become the Associate Manager of the Texas Rangers under Bruce Bochy? (think bench coach with a spiffier title so it's not a "lateral" move to bypass some MLB restrictions). Any speculation who you think might get the bench coach position? It's a huge time commitment as they have to be the one cordinating all the scouting analysis and number crunching as well as keep up with anything else asked of them. I've seen Varitek's name thrown out, but I think he prefers the consultant role rather thanthe day to day grind and commitment a bench coach position requires. -M I really don't think titles matter, other than the pitching coach, and maybe the 3rd base coach... they're all just 'staff' to me.

That Wales/USA match was an intriguing one, I felt.
I have torn loyalties. Wales is part of the UK. I’m in England, but want constituent nations to do well. But I do love US culture, people, etc. Honestly, it was like watching your two best friends compete for a trophy. Both played a very good game.
If it’s England-USA in the final, though, sorry, dear Americans, love ya, but got to root for my home country!

The only thing I understood were the players’ names and the GOOOOOOOOOAL call when Gareth Bale slammed home the PK to knot the match at 1-1. I might have to do that...it was just terrible. Foxsports just always has bad camera angles, and although it shouldn't matter their infographics just look so glaringly dated. And the half time show is a joke, the lighting makes Alexi Lalas look ancient. On top of all that I hate how bad they pander to Qatar, not only in the comercials painting the country to be a wonderland but in the commentary too. Blows my mind. That Wales/USA match was an intriguing one, I felt. I have torn loyalties. Wales is part of the UK. I’m in England, but want constituent nations to do well. Although I was hoping for the win it was a pretty solid match, and truth be told I love watching the English National Team so I'll be pulling for them in the long run! Their 6-2 win over Iran was fun to watch. I was surprised to see Argentina fall to Saudi Arabia though, I bet no one outside the Arab world called that one right.

Sox made their first offseason addition signing free agent lefty reliever Joely Rodriguez to a 1 year $2 million contract plus incentives and an option for a 2nd year.
I've seen Sox fans go nuts on line complaining about this one all day, griping about signing a middle reliever when X and Raffy are still unsigned.
But this is, as far as I can tell, simply a maintenance move, adding an affordable lefty specialist to the pen to replace those they let go. It does nothing to extend or elevate the bullpen, just finding a replacement arm for those that they let go. If it weren't the first signing of the off-season no one would have noticed or cared, but some fans choose to make mountains out of molehills and read this as them not prioritizing X or Raffy, when it really has nothing to do with either.
Word is the Sox made a legit offer to Raffe, but the sides are still $80 million apart in total contact value but are making progress. It's more about length of contract than average annual salary at this point is the scuttlebutt, but it's a lot closer than the sides have been since negotiations started. Sox could up the AAV of the contract to keep the length shorter, or add years, or buyouts or something to make it work. We'll see.
But baseball free agency works slowly, unlike the NFL and NBA where all the big names sign on the first day. In MLB there's usually no big movement until at least the Winter Meetings in December. Though Aaron Judge was in San Francisco this week meeting with the Giants, so there could be a Thanksgiving surprise. And I think Judge will be the first domino before any other big name signs. The teams that are in on Judge aren't making big offers to other free agents right now, until whether they know if they have to pay Judge or not, so a lot of the big name free agents (like Xander) are having to wait to see what kind of market develops for them as they aren't getting official offers yet (for all we know The sox have made Xander an offer, but he's waiting to see what other offers are to know what kind of leverage he has but I doubt he will get those offers until Judge signs). So the whole league is in wait and see mode right now. Winter Meetings are Dec 4-7th, so about a week and a half before the dominos usually start to fall for MLB free agency.

I haven't paid much attention to college football this year (or for the last couple of years). But Boise State beat Utah State today to go 8-0 in conference play and will host Fresno State for the Mountain West Championship next week. Not too shabby for a team that replaced their QB and their Offensive Coordinator early in the season. Go Orange. Go Big Blue. Fight, Fight, BSU!

Congratulations to Canada, who won their first ever Davis Cup -- 109 years after they first played the tournament - at the expense of 28-time champions Australia.

@mrp, in case you hadn't seen this, Ramon Vazquez is apparently going to be the Sox' new bench coach. (I was off by 180 feet... thought it might be Febles.) He was managing in Puerto Rico and resigned after yesterday's gam to start coaching the bench.
Anyway, he's a Cora guy in more ways than one. Cora hired him in 2018 the two were traded for one another in 2005, with Vazquez going to Cleveland for Cora.

Cora hired him in 2018 the two were traded for one another in 2005, with Vazquez going to Cleveland for Cora. I saw a couple of unconfirmed reports on twitter form Pete Abraham and the like, so I thought it was credible, but was waiting for official word from the Sox to be sure. Not surprised that they got this done before the Winter Meetings, and I think choosing a Cora guy indicates the Cora is not going anywhere for a while. Both X and Rafe are big Cora supporters, so I'm not surprised they are planting their tentpole with Cora and his chosen staff in an offseason where resigning/extending those two is the stated priority. That said, if those deals don't get done and the Sox have another sub-par season, that tentpole and all attached could get uprooted and discarded. -M
