First WS game I watched in full since game 7 of 2019. What a crazy last few innings! Reminded me how much I used to love this game (still love baseball history but haven't been a regular MLB viewer in years)

Great game, gut punch ending. That's the game the Yanks needed to win with their ace on the mound. A win tonight will suffice

Great game, gut punch ending. That's the game the Yanks needed to win with their ace on the mound. A win tonight will suffice Too bad Torres didn't get in front of the throw by Soto instead of trying to short-hop it. Soto got the error but that extra base is on Torres. And that set up the SF by Betts. Details, details. But I do want six more like last night's game. PS: Memo to the announcers, analysts and other talking heads: Yeah, I get the similarity to the Gibson HR off the Eck, but nobody remembered Sandy Amoros's iconic catch in Game Seven of the '55 Series, of which Verdugo's nice catch was a close counterpart. But then their knowledge of baseball would have to reach back beyond the Guardians back to at least the days of the Devil Rays, and beyond even the Garth Iorg Era in Toronto. Big lefty at the plate, left-handed left-fielder on the run, makes the grab with his glove fully extended. Didn't have to go into the stands, but did run forever to get there. And as you'll see, was able to get the DP. Also, and I didn't see this until this morning, but after the game, in which a big lefty slugger beat the Yankees in a post-season game with a walk-off bomb to right, there were A-Fraud and Cheater sitting at the desk with Ortiz, interviewing Dave (Yeah, I stole that base!) Roberts! A little episode of PSDT for them.* *Post-season David Trauma

The World Series is creating a huge amount of excitement in Japan, as you can imagine. All Blacks vs. Japan spoilers: {Spoiler: Click to show} A mix of good and bad, much like the rest of this All Blacks season. There was plenty of teeth gnashing over the All Blacks losing their way in the second half and the bench having little to no impact. The next three tests are going to be tough. We don't have the depth to win them all, but anything less than 2 out of 3 will be met with a harsh reaction back home. Huge crowd in Yokohama. Wish I'd bothered to get a ticket.

It was a weird game: in spite of the lop-sided score, the only stretch of sustained dominance for the ABs was the last 20 minutes of the first half.
I think the ABs are capable of developing the same kind of depth the Springboks have but they have to be willing, like the Boks are, to put up with some mistakes and maybe even the odd loss while the new caps are climbing their learning curve as international players. These guys are so talented that the curve is going to be pretty steep for many of them - but they need playing time, more than most of them are getting.
Finau had a very good game - another forward who should be getting more chances. Sititi was great - but did he even need to be there, let alone play the whole 80 minutes? Tosi and, as a sub, Lakai, had OK performances but weren't as noticeable as I'd hoped they'd be. I was happy to see Reuben Love score two late tries, just when I was thinking 12 minutes wasn't much time for anyone to do anything.

I don't think the NZ rugby public are ready to accept losses yet. They're in a similar position to the Brazilian football team in that they're expected to win, and win in style. There is a resistance towards suffering losses now to be stronger in the long run. Some pundits are realistic about where the All Blacks are at in their rebuild, and others have argued that fear of losing is a negative motivating factor, but most view the All Blacks' tradition of winning as the cornerstone of All Blacks rugby. In other words, not gonna happen. As evidenced by Ruben Love being released back to the All Blacks XV side. Robertson is under pressure to deliver results on this tour. The development stuff is meant to happen on the XV tour.

I hope I can see those two All Blacks XV games. Munster should provide some serious competition - I don't think it would be a huge upset if they beat a young, inexperienced AB XV side. I haven't seen Georgia play recently but they have a lot of guys playing in the Top 14 competition in France and I think of them as a very tough side physically.
In a way I suppose it's better that a player like Ruben Love get some serious minutes with the XV side than sit on the bench and come on for a few minutes here and there with the first team, so I won't complain too much. But if he continues to show with the AB XV the kind of special talent we see in Super Rugby, I would hope that next season he'd be given more of a chance.
Regarding the upcoming tour opener England and their play in general lately, I thought Stephen Donald made some very interesting observations on the last episode of "the Breakdown". He made some very specific points about their tactics in the games against England earlier this year and why their attack didn't always get going the way they'd like.

Really enjoying the baseball playoffs this year despite no rooting interest... been some really good games. I think John Smoltz is pretty knowledgable... coming up off the top of your head a play from 70 years ago isn't actually inexcusable. @ Ricky the rules changes make the game much more watchable.. might be time to come back next year

Yankees lack of ability to play fundamental baseball throughout the series cost them this series. Defensive miscues, baserunning mistakes, inability to move runners over, mental lapses, and bad managerial decisions all cost them dearly in this series. I think the poster child of this was Weaver making a 3rd pick off attempt when the limit was 2, creating a balk an moving a runner into scoring position and taking away the force at second. They nearly cost themselves the go ahead run earlier in the game when the runner from third didn't sprint to score on sac fly and the runner on first tried to advance to second and almost got thrown out. He barely beat the throw and if he had been tagged out, the run would not have counted because he had not crossed the plate. Little things like that, mental errors, bad decisions, etc. piled up over the course of the series nullifying the talent the Yankees had. It's the same kind of things the Dodgers had done for years while coming up short in the post season year after year. This year the Dodgers avoided those things and the Yanks couldn't.

And it was an exciting Series. The Amoros catch, the Gionfriddo catch, the Mays catch, the Billy Martin catch, the Agee and Swoboda catches and the Dwight Evan’s catch are among some of the most iconic World Series moments and the announcers and the guys pumping info into their ears should definitely be aware of. Smoltz is certainly knowledgeable about the game, but he way over-explains. And he sounds so much like the guy doing play-by-play that it sounded as if there was no interplay between different announcers, but just one voice droning on. It’s one time I actually wished there had been three in the booth.

Former Red Sox Alex Verdugo strikes out for the Yankees to end the game. -M Former DODGER Alex Verdugo who continually talked s#!t about the Dodgers 2020 pennant win. Fitting that he was the final out. I've been on adrenaline since the last out last night. Very little sleep here in LA, as some fireworks were lit in my neighborhood. Lots of cheering and screaming. I was on a video call with my brother, who's visiting his daughter in Sacramento, my dad in Las Vegas and our friend in Oregon as we all watched the 9th inning together. I was on pins and needles all game. What a crazy comeback. One for the ages.
