Steelers started off the first half of their home opener dominating the Browns 27-3. I have no idea who the two teams were that came out of the locker room during the second half. The Steelers performance in the third quarter was abysmal allowing the Browns to tie the game. Their defense was however able to prevent the Browns from scoring in the forth quarter. With Shaun Suisham scoring the game winning 41-yard field goal.

I played golf instead of watching the Bears. It looks like I made the right call. The Bears are at San Francisco next week, where they haven't won since the Super Bowl winning 1985 season.
Good news on the Illini front as the rest of the Big Ten looks just as bad as we do. Maybe we can get to a bowl game this year.

Great win for the 49ers. Some things that stood out:
- Carlos Hyde is the real deal. Can't wait to see what he can do in an extended role.
- Colin seems steady as ever.
- Secondary played well despite losing three corners to injury throughout the game. The one big goof was that deep pass from Romo.
- Dawson better get his shit together.
- The offensive line wasn't that bad. Colin only got sacked once, which was on Martin. Speaking of Martin he did a good job overall. Yeah it was against Dallas, but he held his own for the most part.
- Justin Smith showed real leadership today. At one point during a timeout by Dallas I believe, he rallied the troops and got folks fired up.
- We have to clean up the penalties, although a couple of the calls against the 49ers seemed bogus.
- I feel good amount the receivers. A lot more confident compared to last year, even though Colin passed for 400 yards in the opener against the Packers.
- The rush defense is alarming. Things got a tad better in the fourth quarter, but overall it was unsettling and has to be improved moving forward. I'm praying that it was just a combo of Murray and the offensive line winning at the point of attack. I'm not sure. It is a cause for concern though. Adjustments need to be made before Aldon and Bowman come back.

Well Ray Rice has been released and not suspended by the NFL indefinitely. He may never play again.

I doubt they drop a lifetime ban, and unless they do he'll get another shot. I think he'll end up gone the rest of this season and maybe part or all of next season.

I wonder if the NFLPA will represent Rice. I can absolutely understand them refusing because it's not the best PR move, but I don't think it's wise to set a precedent that the NFL can set these standards and then a month later ignore them (especially if, as Mortensen says, the league most likely did have the video earlier).

An NFL "lifetime ban" can be challenged once each year and potentially overturned.

Are you suggesting that should have an impact on what the NFL does here?

Well, damn. RIP to ABA legend Marvin "Bad News" Barnes, probably the quintessential member of the Spirits of St. Louis. I was fortunate to be able to get his autograph (along with those of a lot of other longtime favorites of mine, like James Silas, David Thompson, Darnell Hillman, Warren Jabali, Dan Issel, Louie Dampier, Willie Wise, Artis Gilmore, James Jones & Spencer Haywood) at the ABA reunion in Indianapolis in 8/97.
(No, I wouldn't go farther than across town, if that, for any sort of comics or sf-type con. [Especially, of course, since there's no chance that a Philip K. Dick or a John Severin would be present.] For this, though, I happily drove from North Little Rock to Indy with my two dogs.)

After looking at the latest tape from the Ray Rice assault I think Roger Godell should be made to resign. No one believes that this tape wasn't viewed by him before Monday. This is the video age and now many more cover-ups will be revealed.

This is the video age and now many more cover-ups will be revealed. This is just another in the list of eff-ups from Herr Goedel's legacy. Ray Rice, Jim Ursay...he just whitewashes everything. If he was truly a commissioner, he would've been on top of all of these problems. He failed his way upwards; I do agree with him resigning.

Let's get real: As far as the NFL, the owners, the slavering lapdog media & the blood-lusting fans continue to aid & abet an enterprise that winks at brain damage, rampant gambling, steroid abuse that makes the Mark McGwires & Arnold Schwarzeneggers of the world look like Charles Atlas' original 98-lb. weakling, & almost all criminal behavior, WTF is the problem?
As long as the zombies who make up the fan base continue to vote with their wallets & their TVs, there is no problem.
That's assuming, of course, that ratings for last night didn't drop precipitously. I'm assuming they didn't, though I'm open to being pleasantly shocked.

I gave up on the NFL a while ago, and it feels so good to have my Sunday afternoons free. My wife and I were tiring of the 24/7 365 coverage of every bit of insignificant garbage (Peyton Manning has a hangnail; will he be able to hold the ball on Sunday?) from the 4-Letter Abomination, but it has gotten so much worse lately; a couple of weeks ago, there were five stories on the rolling ticker at the bottom, and every one was about an off-field arrest or legal issue. Living in Pittsburgh, the drooling devotion to "Da Stillers" has just made the entire thing worse, to the point it completely turned us off on the entire league.
Mind you, I love college football, so it's not the sport itself, and I can find myself easily wiling away a Saturday afternoon or evening watching a couple of games, but I haven't watched a minute of NFL football since week 2 of last season and I cannot imagine watching any of it going forward.
Oh, and my beloved Pirates have been on a tear lately that, coupled with poor play from the Atlanta Braves and an absolutely wonderful implosion by the Milwaukee Brewers, has put them 1.5 games up for the second wild card with 19 games to go. Second straight year of meaningful September baseball in Pittsburgh is a great thing.

I've watched less and less football over the years, but I think I'm finally done with all of it. I didn't watch any games this week (NFL or NCAA), and then with Ray Rice and Penn State yesterday I finally realized it's just too toxic. Everything about the sport from the actual game to how off the field stuff is handled (and treated as if it's some separate thing) is just disgusting.
Of course, everything I dislike about it can still be found in other sports, but none of them bring all the crap together quite like football.
