I wonder if Dan B covered this basketball game in Alabama. The basket was scored 15 seconds into the game. Only seven shots were taken in the entire game.

Two weeks until Sox pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers (Feb 20) and less than 3 to full team reports (Feb. 25). Spring is coming!

Jerry Rice recently admitted to using the banned substance stickum during his career. Yeah I didn't like hearing about that. Rice is my favorite player of all time, but he really just needs to shut his mouth. He spouts some non-sense every year about something and at this point I'm guessing he's just trying to stay relevant.

Ask last years defending world champions how their season went Besides, it's an odd year so the Giants are not relative to playoff/championship discussions this year -M

My Penguins posted their second straight shutout in the province of Alberta last night, taking down the Calgary Flames 4-0 just a couple of nights after beating the Edmonton Oilers 2-0. They're back in first place and it looks like Sidney Crosby may be breaking out of his "slump", which is still better than what 90% of the rest of the league produces.

Rumors of Rice (and other great receivers of his era) using stickum are old news and have been around since their playing days. I can remember color commentators like Madden and others commenting on weird color substances on hands and gloves in more than a few games from the 80s onwards. It shouldn't be shocking to anyone who paid attention to the game during that period and didn't have hero-worship blinders on. Athletes and coaches are always looking for a competitive advantage. Sometimes its within the rules, sometimes it's not. Sometimes things that were once legal are made illegal because of public reaction and other times it goes in the opposite direction and things that were illegal are now part of certain games or are just overlooked by officials of certain sports. Sometimes people are caught, sometimes they get away with it, but it's pervasive and enduring. Win at all costs is ingrained in the sports culture.
What is surprising is not that players and coaches cheat, what is surprising is that people are still surprised by this. It has been going on since the dawn of professional sports and is commonplace, but people still choose to have the hero-worship blinders on and act surprised everytime it happens.
Hell, every penalty called in a football game is a caught cheating at its heart.

Is it wrong that I am hoping A-Rod hits the 6 homers he needs to reach 660 on the career and trigger the $6 million bonus the Yanks have to pay him. I don't really want A-Rod to get the money, but I want to see the Yanks continue to pay for their bad contracts... -M

I'll just say that Rice using stickum isn't like Fred Biletnikoff having a huge wad on his sock which was ridiculous. We don't know how much Rice applied and for how long.
His tweet yesterday that "everyone did it" just made him look like more of a moron. He needs to start thinking or stop talking. For as great of a player he was, he's almost the polar opposite when it comes to being on television in almost any capacity.

I'll just say that Rice using stickum isn't like Fred Biletnikoff having a huge wad on his sock which was ridiculous. We don't know how much Rice applied and for how long. But nonetheless, it was not illegal during Biletnikoff's career, which ended after the 1978 season. Stickum was banned in 1981. So while Stickum clearly had more of an impact on Biletnikoff's career and certainly gave him an advantage, it wasn't cheating at the time because the rule was not in place yet. For Rice, it was. True. I'm just saying I doubt whatever Rice used and for how long he decided to use it compared to the globs that Fred had, legal or not.
