Knickerbocker is an old slang term for a Dutch settler/descendant living in New York. It comes from the name of Washington Irving's fictitious author of his History of New York. I remember looking that up when Thor and Jarvis were talking about watching a Knickerbockers game in a 70s issue of Avengers and it kind of stuck with me through the years.

Not directly related to the NBA draft, but I've always wondered - I know what knickers are; what are bockers? mrp said it just beautifully!

Oh my beloved Red Sox how thou dost tease me! After an atrocious stretch, they seem to be putting things back together. Two good turns through the rotation (with the exception of Masterson who has been exiled to the DL), with Miley looking good for all of May so far, Buckholtz appearing solid and Porcello good more often than not...only Kelly remains an enigma. Rusney has been summoned form the wilds of Rhode Island, and he has not been spectacular (a couple of hits nothing clutch) but the line up shake up that accompanied his arrival seems to have woken the team from it's offensive doldrums. Napoli has been on fire recently (he is always hot and cold and can carry a team when he is hot, as witnessed by this series with the Angels and carrying the talisman of a 9 year old's signature on his bat...
it's all so tantalizing, making me want to believe, to have hope, but yet....
ah too many times down this path with the boys of summer...I watch, I keep an open mind, but I can't buy in just yet. 2004...2007...2013 all good memories but I still bear the scars of 1973-2003 as reminders not to buy in too soon...I'm not font of negativity that Eric Wilbur of boston.com or the sports talk hosts of Boston are, but I am still skeptical....it's going to be a roller coaster of a season no matter which way it goes...

Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors - are up 3-0 and could sweep the Hawks and the Rockets ... Could LeBron James could bring home the Championship Trophy to Cleveland this year?
I'm rooting for the Cavaliers this year!

And today's Sox game was exactly why I can't bring myself to buy into this team no matter how promising things start to look....

I was sorting through some clothes the other day and I have to say, I think I must have the weirdest collection of sports jerseys of anyone I know.
I realize that's a bold statement, but I really have somehow accumulated a bizarre collection without really trying.
Anyone have any particularly odd or random jerseys in their wardrobe?

Good call. The 25-30 homer/150 strikeout Red Sox as I like to call them. I'm looking at you Mike Easler and Tony Armas!!!

For the first time in 38 years there is a Triple Crown winner in horse racing. American Pharoah was much the best in all three races and won the Belmont Stakes by 5 1/2 lengths.

Nice. I've got a Whalers jersey also, but it's the later one with the navy blue.
Actually, I have jerseys from five NHL teams, and two of them don't exist any more. Besides two Bruins jerseys (Andy Moog and Terry O'Reilly), a Blues jersey, and a vintage Oilers jersey from the 80's, I also have a Whalers jersey, and an Atlanta Flames jersey.

I still own the Quebec Nordiques jersey I had when I was a kid, along with a Bruins jersey, Flyers jersey (I got it cheap), and a Colorado Avalanche jersey with Peter Forsberg's name and number on it. My wife almost bought me an old Colorado Rockies hockey jersey before settling on the Whalers, and I have toyed with the idea of getting a Cleveland Barons jersey at times.
Outside of hockey, the only jersey I own is a Pittsburgh Pirates jersey with Gerrit Cole's name and number. It was a Christmas gift from my wife two years ago.

I've really ever owned 2 sports jerseys, neither of which do I still have, nor would they fit me. I had a white home Whalers jersey with #5 and Ulf Samuelsson's name on it, and a Raider's 34 Bo Jackson jersey, as I was (and am still) a huge fan of Bo.
