As a kid I grew up a huge fan of the works of Ray Harryhausen and Art Clokey and have enjoyed just about everything from Rankin-Bass to the California Raisins. (Of course we mostly called it claymation at the time.) As an adult I'm still amazed at the potential of this versatile medium and many incredible works of art have been created using it. Some of my favorites include Moral Orel, Army of Darkness, Häxan, The PJs, Robot Chicken, Creature Comforts and King Kong. I'd love to hear about peoples' favorite works, special effects artists and directors who utilize this malleable medium. Has anyone actually tried to make a stop motion movie themselves?
I highly recommend everyone takes the time to watch the award winning short film Harvie Krumpet if they haven't already. It is beautifully touching, at times tragic and the humorous bits are both hilarious and heart warming.

Ray Harryhausen is the king. I'll watch his movies just for the animation, forget the plot. My all-time favorite stop-motion animation was the original King Kong. We did a few seconds of animation in Junior High when I was a kid with jointed paper figures. It helped me to appreciate the sheer labor involved when it's done by someone with talent.

One of my favorite Christmas specials as a kid was A Claymation Christmas Celebration (1987) which features some really creative and fun musical numbers.

Jesse - I will try to share more of Ray ... but he is by far the most creative and imaginative filmmaker around and I'm in awe of his work on these films in the link below you. Ray Harryhausen Link This website is one of my favorites ...

Vladislav Starevich is one of the pioneers of stop motion animation. If you're not hip to his name, look up his work...miles ahead of the curve. One of his most famous pieces, The Mascot, is a brilliant testament to this animated genre.

While I do love Rankin-Bass and the California Raisins... Nick Park is the king of stop Animation, IMO... Wallace and Grommit are just amazing!

This was done a few years ago and looks very good (though there's less than a minute of actual stop-motion ina two-and-a-half minute video.

There's this really cool Art Clokey documentary called Gumby Dharma (2006) that talks about him creating Gumby, Davey and Goliath as well as his psychedelic and bizarre film Mandala (1977). Really interesting if you are a fan of his work and there are some great interviews with other creators. While searching for a trailer on youtube I discovered the entire film is available to watch for free.

I had no idea this film existed until the Peter Jackson film came out and they released a tin collectors case that contained the original film, Mighty Joe Young, a documentary on the making of the original... and Son of Kong and I thought it was a fun little film with some really well done fights

Nick Park is the king of stop Animation, IMO... Wallace and Grommit are just amazing! Nick Park and Aardman Animations are great. Aardman actually did some DC Nation Shorts called DC's World's Funnest sort of in the same style as Creature Comforts that were fantastic. DC Entertainment youtube channel has them all posted online to watch for free.
