To be honest, I think Marvel and DC could to a whole lot better by doing more 'key issue' compilations instead of anything and everything. I think having some supporting essays on the books would be good too. They really should take a more curatorial role, but I tend to doubt that's ever going to happen until they eventually license it out to a third party company to put the extra work to make it great.

Yeah, I think it would be worth it for both Marvel and DC to print their entire catalog. Even if the initial printings were small, and even if they held off on the next volume until the current volume sold through. Eventually, I think a print on demand standard format would work. It might not be viable in a value price point, but people would buy it. They have larger catalogs than probably any other publisher just sitting there. And of course it's not all great stuff, but SOMEONE out there wants it, guarantee it. I think it's more likely to be published as DVDs and downloads, not print.

I wish they both Marvel & DC would do DVDs like the Marvel ones that were put out several years ago. I got the Avengers, FF, X-Men, & Spider-Man DVDs, but I wish I'd been able to get more of them. I'd particularly like the Captain America set, but now that they're out of print, people are asking ridiculous prices for them. I've seen people asking over $300 for it.
But I would love to be able to get some of the DC series on DVD too, like the Legion, Teen Titans (old & new), Justice League, Superman, Batman, etc.

I'm pretty sure physical media will be obsolete before Marvel decides to make their entire catalog available in any format. I just built a PC, and added a BluRay drive, and the most typical response I get is "Why?" Also, since I just cancelled my Netflix, I might remove it so I can plug in another hard drive. When 4k content becomes commonplace it will probaby be streaming exclusive, so the next media consumption devices will likely not have any sort of disc drive, possibly just a USB, like Roku's have. Or possibly nothing at all. Just an access point to streaming content. And then those will only last as long as TV's without the features built in do. Eventually a non smart 50" HDTV will be too cheap to be worth building anymore.

I would think comics would be pretty easy to do print to order and make look good, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards.

I have a bunch of both Essentials and Showcases, although I haven't bought any of either for a couple years now. They take up quite a bit of space, and some things you just feel you have enough of.
I have more Showcases than Essentials (because I have more original Marvel floppies than I do DC and try to avoid duplication) and the chances of me ever filling in back issues of whole runs of Silver Age Superman, Green Lantern, Legion etc are pretty much none, since I've given up buying back issues. Whereas, I've already long since done that in a lot of cases with Marvel.
I like 'em fine, but I'm sadder to see the coloured Marvel Masterworks softcover line end than the more economical, but less presentable phone book line of Showcases and Essentials. The DC Chronicles were great as well, but I frankly haven't seen any new editions come out in ages.

For whatever reason, DC never really committed to 'Chronicles'... I guess they didn't sell well? I think DC almost has too much history to try the 'from the beginning' routine. I mean, Superman got 11 chronicles volumes, and it was still in the mid 40s... it would literally be a hundred volumes just to GET to the silver age. Same with Batman, probably. What I'd really like is for them to do something like Marvel's new Epic line, and skip around and hit good stuff, but with some sort of plan. Not that I believe we'll ever see a complete run on anything in Marvel Epic, but the intention is good, at least

And the vast majority of it is really bad stuff that is only of interest to uber-nerds. I don't want to sit down and read two years worth of chronological Batman stories from the mid 1950s. It's a damn sure bet that casual readers aren't going to want too. The only way something like that would begin to make sense would be either print on demand or as downloadable content.

The Chronicles books came it at around 6.5 cents a page (Amazon prices). Which is on the highish end for DC trades, but not outrageous by any means. There are a lot of DC trades that come in at 7.5 cents a page.

DC should publish The Joker's appearances in the Chronicles format. I think they could get all the Joker's appearances from 1940 to 1964 into five or six volumes.

That would be an interesting way to package stuff... you don't see collections for villains often.

That's kind of what Marvel is doing now, but it's kind of inconsistent with some titles. Like they're reprinting the entirety of Moon Knight and Volume 3 of Silver Surfer, but only key arcs on everything else

They should reprint all of them and call them "adult coloring books."

I really don't even know how "adult coloring books" became a thing
